The manifestations of Grain Jaundice (Gu Dan) include dizziness and palpitations immediately after eating, irritability, restlessness, and subsequent yellowing of the body. This condition arises from overeating after prolonged hunger, causing stomach Qi to rush upward and steam. In cases of Yangming disease (Yangming Syndrome), if the pulse is slow, food intake is difficult, and forced fullness leads to vexation and dizziness, accompanied by difficulty in urination, this indicates an impending development of Grain Jaundice. Even if purgative therapy is applied, abdominal fullness will persist; a slow pulse confirms this diagnosis.
Formula for Yinchen Powder (Yinchen San) for treating Grain Jaundice and Jaundice:
* Yin Chen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae): 2 liang
* Chuan Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei): 2 liang, crushed, slightly stir-fried
* Zhi Zi Ren (Semen Gardeniae): 3 fen
Process the above ingredients by crushing and sifting through a coarse sieve to make a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with one zhong zhan (approx. 200-300ml) of water until reduced to 6 fen, strain, and take warm.
For Grain Jaundice presenting with yellowing of the lips and mouth first, abdominal distension, and rapid breathing, this formula is suitable:
* Yu Jin (Radix Curcumae): 1 liang
* Niu Dan (Bos Taurus Gallus): 1 piece, dried
* She Xiang (Moschus): 0.5 qian, finely ground
Process the above ingredients by crushing and sifting through a fine sieve to make a powder. Take 0.5 qian mixed with fresh well-water at any time.
For Grain Jaundice characterized by dizziness immediately after eating, mental irritability and restlessness leading to yellowing, caused by overeating after severe hunger resulting in stomach Qi rushing upward and steaming, this formula is suitable:
* Ku Shen (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis): 3 liang, crushed
* Long Dan (Radix Gentianae): 1 liang, remove rhizome head
* Niu Dan (Bos Taurus Gallus): 1 piece, dried
Process the above ingredients by crushing and sifting into a powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 10 pills per dose with juice of raw Mai Men Dong (Tuber Ophiopogonis Japonici), three to four times daily.
The manifestations of Black Jaundice (Hei Dan) include fullness in the lower abdomen, yellowing of the entire body, blackening of the skin on the forehead, heat in the soles of the feet, and black stools. Yellow Jaundice, Wine Jaundice, and Labor-induced Jaundice often transform into Black Jaundice over time.
Formula for Chixiaodou Powder (Chixiaodou San) for treating Black Jaundice where the body and stool are entirely black:
* Chi Xiao Dou (Semen Phaseoli Uradis): 30 grains
* Chi Fu Ling (Poria Cocos cum Ligno Rubro): 1 fen
* Gua Di (Fructus Thladianthae): 1.5 qian
* Xiong Huang (Realgar): 1 qian, finely ground
* Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis): 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red, crushed
* Nu Wei (Caulis Polygoni Multiflori): 1 liang
Process the specified ingredients by crushing and sifting through a fine sieve to make a powder. For each dose, decoct the Chi Xiao Dou and Chi Fu Ling in one da zhan (approx. 400-500ml) of water until reduced to 5 fen. Strain and take 1 qian of the powder on an empty stomach. Vomiting should occur shortly thereafter, indicating recovery; if no vomiting occurs after walking two or three li, administer another dose.

* Zhi Qiao (Pericarpium Aurantii): 1 liang, bran-fried until slightly yellow, remove pith
* Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae): 1 liang
* Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Ternatae): 3 fen, washed seven times in hot water to remove acridity
* Chi Fu Ling (Poria Cocos cum Ligno Rubro): 1 liang, bran-fried until slightly yellow
