In general, for individuals with deficiency-consumption (Xu Lao), if they consume excessive alcohol and eat fewer grains, heat will generate internally in the Stomach. If, after becoming heavily intoxicated, one is exposed to wind or enters water, it leads to jaundice of the body and eyes, mental restlessness and pain in the epigastrium, fullness and swelling of the lower legs, yellow urine, and red macules on the face. If purgatives are used, over time this may transform into black jaundice. The symptoms manifest as blackening of the face and eyes, a sensation in the heart region as if eating minced garlic, completely black stools, numbness of the skin and extremities, and a floating and weak pulse; thus, wine jaundice can be diagnosed. If there is a sensation of nausea in the heart region, vomiting should be induced to achieve a cure. If urination is difficult, followed by heat in the epigastric region and heat under the soles of the feet, these are the symptomatic manifestations. A floating pulse indicates that vomiting should be induced; a deep and wiry pulse indicates that purging should be employed.
For treating wine jaundice with symptoms of mental restlessness and epigastric pain, fullness and swelling of the lower legs, yellow urine, and red macules on the face, use the Dahuang San (Rhubarb Powder) formula:
Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang, 1 liang, crushed, slightly stir-fried) Fructus Aurantii Immaturus (Zhishi, 1 liang, bran-fried until slightly yellow) Semen Gossypii Herbacei (Zhizi Ren, 1 liang) Semen Sojae Preparatum (Chidou, 3 he)
The above ingredients are pounded, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with one large cup of water until reduced to 0.5 cup, filter out the dregs, and take warm. Administer four to five times daily.
For treating wine jaundice, use the Ai Tang (Mugwort Decoction) formula:
Herba Artemisiae Argyi (Ai Ye, one handful; dried leaves may be used if fresh ones are unavailable) Herba Ephedrae (Mahuang, 1 liang, roots and nodes removed) Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang, 3 fen, crushed, slightly stir-fried) Semen Sojae Nigrum (Heidou, 1 he)
The above ingredients are finely chopped and mixed evenly. Take 0.5 liang per dose, decoct with one large cup of clear wine until reduced to half a cup, filter out the dregs, and take warm. Administer four to five times daily.
For treating wine jaundice with symptoms of mental restlessness and epigastric pain, use the Zhizi San (Gardenia Powder) formula:
Semen Gossypii Herbacei (Zhizi Ren, 1 liang) Semen Sojae Preparatum (Chidou, 2 he) Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang, 1 liang, crushed, slightly stir-fried)
The above ingredients are pounded, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with one medium cup of water until reduced to 0.6 cup, filter out the dregs, and take warm. Administer four to five times daily.
For treating wine jaundice with symptoms of mental restlessness and epigastric pain, fullness and swelling of the lower legs, yellow urine, and red macules or yellow-black discoloration on the face, caused by heavy intoxication followed by exposure to wind and entering water, use this formula:
Cortex Phellodendri Amurensis (Huangbai, 2 liang, crushed) Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis (Mulan Pi, 1 liang)
The above ingredients are finely pounded and sifted to make a powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine. Administer four to five times daily.
For treating hardness below the heart and dark, scanty, painful urination, which are signs of wine jaundice, use this formula:
Poria Cocos cum Ligno Rubrum (Chifuling, 1 liang) Herba Artemisiae Scopariae (Yinchen) Fructus Aurantii Immaturus (Zhishi, 1 liang, bran-fried until slightly yellow) Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis (Gancao, 3 fen, honey-fried until slightly red, crushed) Semen Armeniacae Amarum (Xingren, 3 fen)
The above ingredients are pounded into a fine powder, mixed with refined honey, and pounded three to two hundred times to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, washed down with rice broth.
For treating wine jaundice with generalized yellowing of the body, having the color of yeast sediment, use the Niudan Wan (Ox Gall Pill) formula:
Felle Bos Taurus (Niudan, one piece) Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang, 1 liang, crushed, slightly stir-fried) Radix Genkwa (Yuanhua, 0.5 liang, mixed with vinegar, stir-fried dry) Radix Adenophorae (Raohua, 1 liang, slightly stir-fried) Fructus Cucumeris (Gua Di, 1 liang)
The above ingredients are pounded into a fine powder, soaked overnight in two sheng of clear wine, boiled until reduced by half, filtered to remove dregs, then ox gall is added. Simmer over low heat until thick, and form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 5 pills per dose with warm water. Stop when vomiting or diarrhea occurs.
