After three days of cold damage (Shanghan), the Shaoyang channel is affected. Symptoms include bitter taste in the mouth, dryness, and dizziness. Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction) is indicated.
Shaoyang disease presents with hardness and fullness below the hypochondrium, dry retching, inability to eat, and alternating chills and fever. If emesis or purgation has not yet been used, and the pulse is deep and tight, Chaihu Tang may be administered.
If Shaoyang disease has already undergone emesis or purgation, followed by sweating leading to delirious speech, and symptoms persist after taking Chaihu Tang, this indicates an impending manic disorder. Treatment should follow the specific syndrome.
Shaoyang wind-strike involves abnormal hearing in both ears, red eyes, chest fullness with irritability. Emesis and purgation are contraindicated; if mistakenly used, palpitations and fright will occur. Chaihu Tang is indicated.
In cold damage, a wiry and fine pulse with headache and fever indicates involvement of the Shaoyang channel. Sweating is contraindicated in Shaoyang disease; if induced, it leads to delirium and transmission to the Stomach. If the Stomach harmonizes, recovery ensues; if not, irritability and palpitations arise. Chaihu Tang is indicated.
Three days into cold damage, absence of significant heat accompanied by restlessness indicates the withdrawal of Yang and entry of pathogenic factors into the Yin. Fuling Tang (Poria Decoction) is indicated.
After four days of cold damage, the Taiyin channel is affected. Symptoms include abdominal fullness, vomiting of food, worsening upon purgation, frequent abdominal pain, and hardness/fullness in the heart and chest. If the pulse is floating, sweating is appropriate; if deep, purging the interior is appropriate. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is indicated for sweating; Chengqi Tang (Gut-Draining Decoction) is indicated for purging the interior.
Taiyin wind-strike involves painful heaviness in the four limbs. A pulse that is faint at the cun position, choppy at the chi position, and long indicates impending recovery. Qinglong Tang (Azure Dragon Decoction) is indicated. In Taiyin disease with dysentery but no thirst, internal cold is present; Sini Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction) should be used to warm the interior.
Cold damage presenting with a floating and slow pulse, naturally warm hands and feet, indicates attachment to the Taiyin. Urinary difficulty suggests jaundice will develop. Yincheng Tang (Artemisia Capillaris Decoction) is indicated.
Untreated Taiyin disease may present with sudden irritability and diarrhea more than ten times daily, which then stops spontaneously. This cessation occurs because the Spleen's qi is restored and foul turbidity has been expelled. Jupi Tang (Tangerine Peel Decoction) is indicated.
Following purgation in Taiyin disease, abdominal fullness and frequent pain indicate Guixin Shaoyao Tang (Cinnamon Heart and Peony Decoction). For severe excess abdominal pain in Taiyin disease, Chengqi Tang is indicated for purgation.
After five days of cold damage, the Shaoyin channel is affected. The pulse is faint and fine, with somnolence. The patient desires to vomit but lacks irritability. Spontaneous diarrhea with thirst on the fifth day indicates Yin deficiency, prompting water intake for self-rescue. White urine with diarrhea indicates deficient-cold in the Lower Jiao, failing to control fluids. Longgu Muli Tang (Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell Decoction) is indicated.
Shaoyin disease with cough, diarrhea, and delirium indicates accumulated heat in the Heart. Urination will likely be difficult. Zhuling Tang (Polyporus Decoction) is indicated.
A fine, deep, and rapid pulse in Shaoyin disease indicates interior pathology; sweating is contraindicated. Chengqi Tang is indicated.
In Shaoyin disease, if diarrhea ceases but chills and curling up persist, warmth in the hands and feet indicates treatability. Jianzhong Tang (Middle-Building Decoction) is indicated.
Shaoyin disease with chills, curling up, frequent spontaneous irritability, and aversion to heavy clothing indicates Dachi Hu Tang (Greater Bupleurum Decoction).
Shaoyin disease with generalized heat in the body and extremities, indicating heat in the Bladder, predicts hematochezia. Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction) is indicated.

Early-stage Shaoyin disease with fever and a paradoxically deep pulse indicates Mahuang Fuzi Tang (Ephedra and Aconite Decoction).

Shaoyin disease with diarrhea, sore throat, chest fullness, and irritability indicates Zhuling Tang.
Shaoyin disease with sore throat indicates Gancao Jiegeng Tang (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction).
Shaoyin disease with diarrhea indicates Baitong Tang (White Tongue Decoction).
After treating Shaoyin diarrhea with Baitong Tang, if cold extremities, absent pulse, and irritability persist, Baitong Zhu Lin Tang (White Tongue and Polyporus Decoction) is indicated. Sudden emergence of the pulse indicates death; gradual reappearance indicates life.
Shaoyin disease with limb and epigastric pain, urinary difficulty, cough, or vomiting indicates fluid retention. Xuanwu Tang (Black Tortoise Decoction, i.e., Zhenwu Tang) is indicated.
Shaoyin disease with undigested food in stool, interior cold with exterior heat, cold extremities, faint/almost imperceptible pulse, aversion to cold despite fever, facial redness, abdominal pain, dry retching, sore throat, or intermittent cessation of diarrhea with absent pulse indicates Sini Tang.
Shaoyin disease with diarrhea, cough, vomiting, irritability, thirst, and insomnia indicates Zhuling Tang.
Shaoyin disease with dry mouth and throat requires urgent purgation; Chengqi Tang is indicated.
Shaoyin disease with passage of green watery stool, epigastric pain, and dry mouth indicates Dachi Hu Tang.
Shaoyin disease with abdominal fullness and constipation requires urgent purgation; Chengqi Tang is indicated.
Shaoyin disease with a deep pulse requires urgent warming; Sini Tang is indicated.
Shaoyin disease with postprandial vomiting, epigastric discomfort, inability to vomit despite desire, cold extremities, and wiry-slow pulse indicates excess in the chest. Purgation is contraindicated; emesis is required. Gouti San (Melon Seed Powder) is indicated.
Shaoyin disease with cold above the diaphragm causing dry retching should not be treated with emesis but with warming using Sini Tang.
