Thirst is divided into three types. The first is Xiao Ke (Wasting and Thirsting Syndrome), the second is Zhong Xiao (Middle Wasting), and the third is Shen Xiao (Kidney Wasting). If one drinks much water but urinates little, it is called Xiao Ke.
If one eats much food, feels not very thirsty, urinates frequently, and gradually becomes emaciated, it is called Zhong Xiao. If one is thirsty and drinks incessantly, with severe cases presenting weak legs and knees, turbid urine floating with oily substances, it is called Shen Xiao. These conditions are generally caused by long-term preference for salty foods and roasted meats, and excessive drinking, all of which lead to Xiao Ke. However, in severe cold when seawater freezes, only wine does not freeze, indicating that the nature of wine is extremely hot; no substance can compare to this flavor. Wine enthusiasts indulge in drinking, keeping it constantly at hand. After getting drunk, they lose self-control and eat and drink without limit.
Moreover, although prescriptions can naturally treat other ailments, those who do not understand this principle cannot be saved even by consuming golden elixirs or jade grains (precious medicines). It is truly pitiable. One should ponder this deeply. Now, dietary regulation is used for treatment to assist medicinal efficacy.
