59. Sishun San (Four-Obedience Powder). When a patient suffers from sores and rashes for four to five days, if there is no bowel movement, and the sores/rashes erupt excessively, followed by coarse and rapid breathing, abdominal distension, and dark, scanty, or painful urination, this prescription must be used.
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared with honey), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 1 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. For each dose, take 3 qian, add one cup of water, and decoct until six-tenths remains. Strain and take warm at any time. If qi circulation is restored, wheezing ceases, and abdominal distension resolves, discontinue this medicine. If initially only red spots are seen, bowel movements are normal, but urination is dark and scanty/painful, medication to promote bowel movement is required to facilitate the rapid expulsion of pathogens. If the sores/rashes appear bright red and erupt smoothly, promoting bowel movement is unnecessary.
60. Lidu Wan (Detoxifying Pill). Treats pediatric sores and rashes that are about to emerge, where stomach heat causes fever, coarse breathing, and chest fullness; dark, scanty, or painful urination; startle during sleep; irritability, thirst, and dry mouth/tongue; slightly cold hands and feet; excessive sleepiness; occasional coughing with saliva; and a pulse that is deep, large, slippery, and rapid. It is suitable to take this medicine.
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 liang), Nifen (Calomel), Daqing (Isatidis Folium) (each 1 qian), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum), Zhusha (Cinnabaris) (each 5 fen), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Sheng Qianniu (Ipomoeae Petiolus raw), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) (each 1.5 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder and bind with wheat paste to form pills the size of yellow millet grains. A two-year-old child takes eight pills, administered with ginger and honey water. If bowel movement does not occur, it may be repeated. Adjust dosage according to the child's age and deficiency/excess condition.
61. For cases complicated by food stagnation, Zishuang Wan (Purple Frost Pill). Treats headache, high fever, and abdominal distension caused by food stagnation.
See Heji Fang (Prescriptions of the Bureau of Medical Relief).
62. Xiaodu San (Disinfecting Powder). Treats sores and rashes that have emerged but cannot spread evenly, where pathogenic factors are stagnant and eruption is slow, accompanied by high fever, restlessness, congestion in the throat and diaphragm, restless sleep, and constipation. It also treats upper jiao (upper burner) heat congestion in adults and children, causing sore throat, swelling, and discomfort in the chest and diaphragm. (The preparation method is the same as Shuniuzi Tang [Arctii Fructus Decoction], substituting Fangfeng [Saposhnikoviae Radix] with Shuniuzi Tang).
Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus, stir-fried, 6 liang, also known as Eshi), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared with honey, 2 liang), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica, 1 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. For each dose, take 1 qian, add seven-tenths of a cup of water, and decoct until four-tenths remains. Strain and take after meals and before bed. This medicine treats constipation because it addresses interior heat. Furthermore, Bencao (Materia Medica) states: Eshi has a pungent and neutral flavor. Its indications include treating wind-induced swelling, sudden food stagnation, heat generating wind in flesh, resolving Dan Shi toxicity, and treating wind-induced swelling of the throat and limbs. Its nature is slightly cool, making it suitable for sores and rashes as it can penetrate the muscle layer to expel abscesses and sores. Therefore, it aids in the eruption of sores and rashes. However, it should not be taken if bowel movements are unobstructed.
63. Huaban San (Spot-Resolving Powder).
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, wrapped in paper and thoroughly roasted into powder, or burned on clay tiles to remove fire toxicity), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, sliced and dried, ground into fine powder).
Mix equal parts of the above ingredients. Take one "yi zi" (a small measure) mixed with cooked water, or apply topically to the lips. It relieves headache and dizziness, and helps vent sores and rashes. This is named Shigao Zhimu Hudu San (Gypsum and Anemarrhena Detoxification Powder), treating pediatric spot-rashes. These two prescriptions are excellent; later prescriptions may be too cooling.
64. Dihuang Xionghuang San (Rehmannia and Realgar Powder). Treats warm-toxin macules and slow eruption of sores/pustules. This occurs when winter should be cold but is hot, or when accumulated cold suddenly erupts, preventing the dispersion of heat-toxin, resulting in skin spots like brocade patterns, chest oppression with cough, and vomiting clear fluid. Gegen Jupi Tang [Puerariae Radix and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Decoction] or Dihuang Xionghuang Yinzi [Rehmannia and Realgar Drink] may be used.
Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Danshichidou (Fermented Soybean) (each 4 liang).
Mix with one jin (catty) of lard, expose overnight, and decoct until three-tenths remains (reducing by one-fourth). Strain, add 1 qian of Xionghuang powder (Realgar) and half a qian of Shexiang (Moschus), mix well, and administer according to the child's age. Excessive dosage may cause harm.
65. Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder). Treats pediatric sores and rashes where there is no aversion to cold, only irritability, dark/scanty/painful urination, excessive thirst, or red spots.
Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, shaved), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared with honey, each 0.5 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 2 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 0.5 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. For each dose, take 3 qian, add one cup of water, and decoct until seven-tenths remains. Strain and take warm at any time.
66. Ziheche San (Placenta Powder). Treats pediatric macule-sores where pathogenic factors are unresolved and attack the throat, causing loss of voice, sores on the tongue and cheeks, thirst with reverse flow, irritability, tidal fever, and flushed face.
Ziheche (Human Placenta), Qianggen (Rubiae Radix), Guanzhong (Cyathulae Rhizoma) (each 3 qian), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared with honey, each 0.5 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. For each dose, take 1 qian, add seven-tenths of a cup of water and one slice of fresh ginger, decoct until four-tenths remains, strain, and take warm. Another formula uses Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus).
67. Daimao Tang (Tortoise Shell Decoction). Treats epidemic pea-pox and red sores/rashes that have not yet erupted, helping them resolve internally. For those already erupted, it resolves and benefits by reducing pathogenic factors, preventing them from becoming too severe.
Sheng Daimao (Acanthochelys Carapax, raw), Sheng Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, raw) (each grind thickly in cold water to obtain 2 he of juice).
Mix well. Take half a he per dose, slightly warm. Four to five doses per day are ideal. It is also suitable for cases where eruption is slow. Additionally: For internal attack of pathogenic factors with purple-black color and slow eruption, use one he of thick Daimao water-mixed juice, add pig heart blood the size of a soap bean, and decoct Zicao (Lithospermi Radix) thickly in water. Take all as one dose. Daimao and Xijiao have a slightly cold nature, suitable for heat-toxin, ensuring no error. Both drugs treat plague, insect miasma, resolve hundred toxins, unblock meridians and collaterals, and reduce carbuncles/swelling. Thus, they are used to resolve accumulated toxins and are suitable for use.
68. Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction). Treats pediatric pox/chickenpox, red-black macules with slow eruption, residual heat from sores/toxins, and warm-heat diseases with summerheat. It addresses middle-jiao irritability, heat-thirst, constipation, dark urine, and extreme heat in all seasons. It may be taken during extreme summer heat or warm winters without severe cold.
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 4 liang), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 1.5 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared with honey, 3 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. For each dose, take 2 qian, add one small cup of water and 20 grains of Jingmi (Oryza Sativa Germen), decoct together until half a cup remains. Strain and take warm at any time. This medicine treats summerheat stroke. In cases of sores/pox with extreme heat, corresponding to skin and internal heat, causing irritability, mania, thirst, yellow urine, epistaxis, hematemesis, melena, strangury, and retention, it is applicable. *Zhimi Fang* adds Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) and decocts with Zhuye (Bambusae Folium) for summer irritability in sores/rashes, named Zhuye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction).
69. Renshen Zhuye Tang (Ginseng and Bamboo Leaf Decoction). Treats high fever and irritability in summer, chest oppression, dry mouth/thirst, restless mind, phlegm congestion, and vomiting/reversal. It also treats residual toxins after sores/rashes with persistent fever, dark/scanty/painful urination, and formation of red spots.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, soaked in water and stir-fried seven times), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Danshuye (Bambusae Folium), Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix, heart removed).
Grind the above five ingredients into a coarse powder. For each dose, take 2 qian, add one small cup of water and two slices of fresh ginger, decoct until half a cup remains. Strain and take warm at any time. It is suitable for early-stage sores/rashes with no aversion to cold, only irritability, dark/scanty/painful urination, dryness/thirst, and red spots. This medicine treats summerheat deficiency-irritability and thirst, and residual heat after sores/rashes.
70. Tongshen San (Spirit-Unblocking Powder). Treats sores/rashes with weak pathogenic factors, normal bowel/urinary function, but failure to erupt (collapse/inversion).
Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix raw, stir-fried), Dilong (Pheretima, stir-fried), Zhusha (Cinnabaris, separately ground) (each 1 liang).
Grind into a fine powder. Take one "yi zi" per dose, mixed with a little Huisu wine (Coriandri Fructus wine) and warm water.
71. Qingdai San (Indigo Naturalis Powder). Treats sores/rashes that have not yet suppurated, with severe pain, chest/diaphragm irritability, and restless sleep.
Use Persian Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), size of a date pit, mixed with water and taken. Another method uses water from warming a knife.
72. Yetong San (Wild Man Unblocking Powder). Treats slow eruption of pox and aphasia due to cold damage.
Gan Yeren Fen (Dry Wild Man Feces, burnt to ash), Pian Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum), Shexiang (Moschus) (small amounts each).
Grind into a fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with fresh water and honey. Bencao states: Dry wild man feces treats spider bite sores, clearly indicating its efficacy in promoting rapid eruption of sores/rashes. Spider bites often fail to heal, with threads growing on the skin and spreading. Using Xionghuang (Realgar), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), and Shexiang (Moschus) mixed with water tests on spiders, turning them to water, which was verified. Xionghuang, Qingdai, and Shexiang are appropriate for sores/rashes. Dry wild man feces is also a remedy. "Wild man" refers to monkeys, specifically yellow-haired, long-haired, red-faced ones. Domesticated monkeys' meat and feces are ineffective due to杂 diet deviating from their true nature.
73. Wubi San (Incomparable Powder). Treats adverse conditions of sores/rashes with slow eruption, black sores, and all adverse conditions.
Zhusha (Cinnabaris, 1 liang, ground to powder), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Pian Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum), Shexiang (Moschus), Nifen (Calomel) (each 1 fen, ground).
Grind together finely. For patients, children take one "yi zi", adults take half a qian. Add a small amount of Shuiyin (Hydrargyrum) and 2-3 drops of fresh pig tail blood, mixed with a little fresh water. Administer. The patient should sleep peacefully first, then evacuation occurs. Passage of foul matter like rotting fish intestines or grape clusters indicates relief. Milk drops are excellent for children. Observing this formula reminds us that ancient physicians' prescriptions are invariably effective. The disease and medicine must correspond; otherwise, ingestion leads to death. For example, some cold damage cases are cured with Xiaoshi (Natrii Nitras) and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), while others with Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Hushanhuang (Sulfur), Dan Liu Huang (Sublimated Arsenic Sulfide), and Ai (Mugwort). This is correct correspondence. Incorrect correspondence (e.g., using sulfur/aconice when nitrate/rhubarb is needed) leads to death. This illustrates the intent of Wubi San. It treats excessive heat-toxin accumulation blocking Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive levels), preventing external release and internal passage. External signs include black sores; internal signs include abdominal distension, wheezing, delirium, and obstruction of bowels/urine. It is suitable for coma/fatigue. Where there is toxin, use the corresponding medicine. However, if black scabs are present without internal distension, wheezing, delirium, obstruction, or coma, and bowel movements are normal or loose, Wubi San is contraindicated. This emphasizes prescribing according to syndrome. Case: An 8-year-old boy with black scabs had a weak stomach pulse. Previous doctors used Shengma Tang (Cimicifugae Rhizoma Decoction) and Qianghuo San (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix Powder). Despite chronic stomach weakness and poor appetite, these dispersing formulas caused daily diarrhea. Subsequent warming herbs failed to stop it, leading to death. The dispersing formulas further weakened the organs, causing undigested food. Seeing black scabs without recognizing organ cold rendered Wubi San useless. Thus, one must assess deficiency/excess and cold/heat before prescribing. One cannot blindly use cooling agents for black scabs, risking life.
74. Dou Tang (Black Bean Decoction). Treats sores/pox not yet suppurated, with chest irritability and restless sleep.
Decoct black beans, drink the juice slowly while warm. It also resolves toxicity.
75. Touji San (Muscle-Penetrating Powder) (Indications and formula are identical to Formula 33, Huadu Tang [Toxin-Resolving Decoction]).
76. Huanglian San (Coptis Powder). Treats sores/pox toxins rushing upward, causing sores in the mouth/tongue and lower body. Suitable for cases with heat.
Use 1 liang of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), remove roots, grind to powder. Take 1 qian per dose, decoct in one cup of water until five-tenths remains. Strain and take at any time. Adjust based on age and constitution. Suitable for initial eruption.
77. Tongguan San (Passage-Opening Powder). Treats pediatric macule-sores/water-poison, chest oppression, irritability, thirst, dark/scanty/painful urination, and mouth/tongue sores. It unblocks the Heart meridian and promotes urination.
Shanzhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, stir-fried, each 1 fen), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen, stir-fried), Qumai (Diantherae Herba), Fuling (Poria), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huashi (Talcum) (each 3 fen), Di Fu Zi (Kochiae Fructus) (0.5 liang, dried).
Grind into a fine powder. Take one "yi zi" per dose (half a qian for ages 2-3). Decoct with Dengxincao (Junci Medulla) in half a cup of water until three-tenths remains. For weaker constitutions, Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder), Renshen Baizhu San (Ginseng and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder), or Daochi San (Directing Redness Away Powder) are also suitable.
78. Zixue (Purple Snow). Treats all heat-toxins in adults and children, stomach heat causing macules, resolving pox/chickenpox, cold damage heat entering the stomach causing macules, convulsions with salivation, rapid gangrene, yellow emaciation, sore throat pain, and sores/rash toxins attacking the throat preventing food/water intake.
Huangjin (Gold, 100 liang), Hanshuishi (Halloysitum Rubrum), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 3 jin), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu) (each 3 liang), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, 1 jin), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (8 liang).
Boil gold in 5 dou of water until 3 dou remains. Remove gold. Add other herbs and decoct until 1 dou remains. Filter. Add 2.5 jin of Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas). Simmer over low heat, stirring constantly with a willow spatula. When nearing solidification, pour into a basin. Add 3 liang each of ground Zhusha (Cinnabaris) and Shexiang (Moschus). Stir quickly until uniform. Store cold in a sealed container, protected from wind. Take 1 qian dissolved in warm water (children: half a qian or one "yi zi"). For critical throat conditions, swallow a small amount dry.
79. Zhuye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction). Treats pediatric sores/rashes with no aversion to cold, only irritability, dark/scanty/painful urination, excessive thirst, and red spots. Suitable to take Zhuye Tang and Xijiao San.
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 4 liang), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 2 liang), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared, each 1 liang).
Grind into a coarse powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add one cup of water and a handful of Zhuye (Bamboo Leaves), decoct until half a cup remains. Strain and take warm at any time.
80. Daochi San (Directing Redness Away Powder). Treats sores/rashes with heat accumulation in the Heart meridian, restless sleep, irritability, difficult urination, flushed face, and excessive thirst. In infants craving milk, it is due to thirst.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix raw), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared).
Grind into a coarse powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add one small cup of water, decoct until half a cup remains. Strain and take warm at any time.
81. Jiusheng San (Life-Saving Powder). Treats pediatric sores/rashes with pus formation, adverse conditions, critical distress, and black sinking spots. This medicine is used reluctantly for severe heat-toxin invading the organs.
Zhu Xue (Dragon's Blood/Pig Blood? Text says Pig Blood stored in new jar, hung indoors, dried to powder) (1 liang), Mayaxiao (Saltpeter, ground) (1 liang), Zhusha (Cinnabaris), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Pian Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum), Shexiang (Moschus) (each 1 qian).
Grind extremely fine. Take one "yi zi" per dose with fresh water. Continue until foul matter passes in stool and sores turn red. Do not exceed two doses. Extremely effective.
82. Xijiao Tang (Rhinoceros Horn Decoction). Treats pediatric rash/pox and red sores.
Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, shaved), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, stir-fried), Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex, honey-fried), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed, each 1 liang), Longdan (Gentianae Radix) (0.5 qian), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, prepared, each 0.5 liang).
Grind into a coarse powder. Take 1 qian per dose, decoct in one small cup of water until four-tenths remains. Strain and take warm. Adjust for age. After sores subside, applying thick Xijiao water externally is better. Qian Yi also included this formula. Used to treat excessive sores/rashes to prevent eye involvement, named Tiaogan San (Liver-Regulating Powder). This formula treats excess wind/qi, Heart/Liver blood heat, internal fluid agitation, constipation, ascending toxins, and unresolved exterior heat. Gualou treats internal agitation; Gouteng and Longdan treat wind/blood heat; Sangbaipi and Shigao treat upper jiao heat; Mahuang and Huangqi dissipate muscle heat; Xijiao and Gancao resolve heat-toxin. Medication must correspond to the disease to restore healthy qi. Otherwise, it causes great harm. For example, Xijiao San is only for cases with multi-day constipation, wheezing, confusion, irritability, and delirium. Otherwise, mismatched treatment is dangerous.
83. Niuhuang San (Calculus Bovis Powder). Treats hematochezia due to yang-toxin from sores/rashes entering the stomach, causing relentless day/night bleeding, abdominal pain, and crying.
Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, 1 fen), Yujin (Curcumae Radix, 1 liang).
Grind into a fine powder. Take half a qian per dose, decoct in half a cup of Jiangshui (fermented grain liquid) until three-tenths remains. Take warm with dregs. Adjust for age. Twice daily.
84. Yulu San (Jade Dew Powder). Treats sores/rashes in summer with irritability, heat, and thirst.
Hanshuishi (Halloysitum Rubrum, soft, slightly green-black with fine lines, 0.5 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw, 1 qian), Fangjieshi (Calcitum, hard white with distinct layers, hand-unbreakable; substitute Shigao if unavailable, hard white like gypsum breaking into square segments, 0.5 liang).
85. Xijiao Yinzi (Rhinoceros Horn Drink). Resolves heat-toxin, dispels wind-rash.
Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared, each 0.5 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 2 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 liang).
Grind into a coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct in one small cup of water until half a cup remains. Strain and take warm at any time.
86. Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction). Treats excessively erupting sores/rashes. *Liuren Shu* states: For cold damage or plague, if sweating should have been induced but wasn't, resulting in internal blood stasis, or incomplete epistaxis/hematemesis leaving residual stasis, with yellow face and black stool, this formula resolves stasis and treats excessive sores/rashes.
Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 1 liang), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix raw, 0.5 jin), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, 3 fen), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex, 1 liang).
Cut into hemp-seed sized pieces. Take 5 qian per dose, boil in 1.5 cups of water until 1 cup remains. If heat with mania-like behavior, add 2 liang of Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix). If the pulse is large but delayed, with abdominal fullness and self-reported fullness, it indicates absence of heat; do not use Huangqin.
