Suzi (Perilla Fructus, 1 he, shelled) and Xinmi (Fresh Rice, 2 he) are boiled into a porridge for consumption. Once the intestines are moistened, bowel movements will naturally become unobstructed.
After childbirth, Qi and Blood suddenly become deficient. The bones and muscles lack nourishment from Blood, often leading to sudden trismus (lockjaw) and clenching of teeth, as well as spasms and convulsions of the tendons and vessels in the hands and feet. The symptoms resemble Zhongfeng (Wind Stroke), or Jingxian (Spasm and Epilepsy). Although the pulse is deficient and large, this indicates floating Deficient Fire with Phlegm present. Treatment should focus on addressing the root cause rather than adhering to biased approaches using Wind-dispelling and Phlegm-resolving formulas, which would further weaken the postpartum woman. The treatment method should first involve administering Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Generating New Blood) to generate and invigorate new Blood. If critical symptoms appear, after three doses, add Renshen (Ginseng Root) to tonify Qi and rescue from Blood collapse. If there is Phlegm and Fire, small amounts of Juhong (Tangerine Peel) and Chao Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, stir-fried) can be added; Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) and Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice) may also be used. It is strictly forbidden to use Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) and Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) together.
Postpartum Blood deficiency leads to trismus, neck stiffness, and tendon spasms, resembling Zhongfeng (Wind Stroke).
Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome, 1.5 qian), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 3 qian), Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Renshen (Ginseng Root) (each 2 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome) (each 4 fen), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) (each 1 qian), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) (each 4 fen), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, stir-fried with Ginger Juice, 8 fen). If there is Phlegm, add Banxiaqu (Pinellia Fermented Paste), Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), and Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice). If thirsty, add Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) and Gegen (Pueraria Root).
Postpartum Zhongfeng (Wind Stroke) presents with mental confusion, slurred speech, and impaired movement of the four limbs.
Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) (each 5 qian), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Zaoren (Ziziphus Seed), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Yuanzhi (Polygala Root), Shanyao (Dioscorea Rhizome), Baiziren (Biota Seed), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) (each 1 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome) (each 7 qian), Xixin (Asarum Root), Nanxingqu (Arisaema Fermented Paste), Banxiaqu (Pinellia Fermented Paste), Shichangpu (Acorus Rhizome) (each 8 qian), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 2 liang). Grind all into powder, form pills with honey, and coat with Zhusha (Cinnabar). Take 60-70 pills each time, washed down with clear soup.
Sweating during delivery is caused by labor injuring the Spleen, fright injuring the Heart, and fear injuring the Liver. As stated in the Neijing (Inner Canon): "Labor involving bodily exertion causes sweat from the Spleen; fright that depletes Essence causes sweat from the Heart; fear causes sweat from the Liver." Postpartum women often suffer from these three factors simultaneously, leading to sweating. There is no need to immediately administer astringent herbs to stop sweating; if the Spirit is calmed, the sweating will cease naturally. If pain is caused by Blood stasis masses, other medications should not be hastily added. It is appropriate to take Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Generating New Blood) for two or three doses to eliminate the pain, followed by Jiashen Shenghua Tang (Shenghua Tang with Ginseng) to stop deficient sweating. If extreme fatigue follows delivery, accompanied by profuse sweating and loss of complexion and spirit, this is Wangyang Tuohan (Yang Collapse and Sweat Leakage). One must weigh the situation and quickly administer Jiashen Shenghua Tang (Shenghua Tang with Ginseng) with an increased dose of Renshen (Ginseng Root) to rescue the critical condition, without being constrained by concerns over blood stasis pain. Sweat is the fluid of the Heart; within the body, it nourishes as Blood; outside the body, it manifests as Sweat. After significant Blood loss in postpartum women, excessive sweating occurs due to injury from labor, fright, and fear. The Spirit is deficient and unable to guard the fluids. Treatment should strengthen the Spleen to consolidate the essence of fluids, nourish Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) to guide Blood back to its source, irrigate the four limbs, and prevent them from leaking out as external sweat. In miscellaneous diseases, although spontaneous sweating and night sweats are distinguished, if sweating extends down to the waist and feet, it is a critical and ominous symptom that is difficult to treat.
