Since the mother's Qi cannot move independently, difficult labor occurs. One should tonify the mother's Qi, so that the fetus becomes robust and delivery is facilitated. Thus, based on Zi Su Yin (Perilla Decoction) from *Da Quan Fang* (Great Complete Formulas), Qi-tonifying herbs such as Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) were added. The formula was modified according to the pregnant woman's physique, constitutional nature, and seasonal factors, and named Da Sheng San (Birth-Attaining Powder). Using Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fupi (Mori Cortex / Atrapi Fructus - *Note: Text says 腹皮 likely referring to Dafupi or similar*, Zisu (Perillae Folium), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and adding Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) and Sharen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), its efficacy far surpasses that of Shou Tai San (Fetus-Thinning Powder).
During pregnancy, medication primarily focuses on clearing heat and nourishing blood. After clearing heat and nourishing blood, tonifying the Spleen is paramount, as this cultivates the root of acquired primordial Qi. In cases requiring kidney support (referenced as "Yang Kui" in text, likely a specific context or typo for a kidney-tonifying approach), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) are not used; instead, Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) plus Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex) and Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix) are employed to tonify the Kidney. Since the fetus is anchored by the Kidney, if Kidney Qi is solid, the fetus remains secure. This highlights the subtlety where tonifying the Kidney may be superior to tonifying the Spleen in certain contexts. Both approaches contain profound principles and should be applied after observing the syndrome. However, mental exertion, anger, and fire arising from emotional desires can all cause miscarriage. Investigating the cause, it is due to Heat. Fire consumes substances, which is a natural law of creation. For women with habitual miscarriages, if food intake is low and Middle Qi is disordered, one need not immediately nourish blood; instead, first regulate the Spleen and Stomach, then administer Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). Only when Spleen and Stomach function is robust and diet is strong can Qi and Blood generate naturally.
The female Kidney system is connected to the fetus; it represents the mother's True Qi, upon which the fetus relies for growth. After conception, one should maintain tranquility so that Qi and Blood remain harmonious. Internally, avoid the Seven Emotions; externally, moderate the Five Flavors. Foods that are extremely cold or hot are prohibited. Mist, dew, wind, and pathogenic factors must not penetrate during intervals of weakness. Sexual intercourse, which stirs desire-fire, is also forbidden. Diet must be carefully regulated. If Heart Qi is greatly startled, epilepsy may result; if Kidney Qi is insufficient, Jie Lu (delayed closure of fontanelles) may occur; if Spleen Qi is disharmonious, emaciation may ensue; if Heart Qi is deficient, spiritual insufficiency may arise. The fetus depends on the mother's Qi, so caution is essential. Unless there are signs of fetal movement pain, fetal pain, diarrhea/dysentery, or external Wind-Cold pathogens, medications should not be taken lightly.
