Since diseases have been resolved, one must know how to seek offspring; therefore, this section follows.
Where there are husband and wife, there are father and son. After marriage, one must necessarily seek lineage continuation. Thus, the sages said, "Among the three forms of unfilial conduct, having no descendants is the greatest," emphasizing the supreme importance of lineage. Generally, those wishing for children should first examine whether the couple suffers from exhaustion, internal injury, or chronic ailments. Based on the condition, provide treatment to harmonize the interior and exterior; then the woman will happily be able to conceive.
The concubines and attendants of the Princess Consort of Prince Xiao of Jianping were all beautiful but bore no children. He selected unmarried girls from good families to serve him, yet still no children were born. He asked, "Is there a method to obtain male heirs?" Cheng replied, "Union between man and woman must occur at the appropriate age. Although a man's essence may flow freely at sixteen, he should not marry until thirty; although a woman's Tian Gui (menstruation) may arrive at fourteen, she should not marry until twenty. Both parties must possess complete and solid Yin and Yang Qi before intercourse. Only then will conception occur upon union, pregnancy lead to childbirth, and the child be strong and long-lived. Now, young girls who have not yet undergone the capping ceremony have just begun their Tian Gui; approaching men prematurely causes premature leakage of Yin Qi, injuring them before they are fully developed and disturbing them before their vitality is solid. Hence, intercourse fails to conceive, or if pregnant, fails to deliver, or if delivered, the child is frail and short-lived. This is why the Prince has no heir. However, some women bear only daughters, others only sons. If Your Highness could seek out women who frequently bear sons and arrange marriages through official channels, that would be the way to obtain male heirs." The Prince said, "Very well." Within a year, six sons were born. When old Yang meets young Yin, or old Yin meets young Yang, there is also a path to having children.
There are three main reasons for a woman's infertility. First, ancestral tomb Feng Shui issues preventing lineage; second, the couple's birth years and lifespans are mutually conflicting; third, illness in the husband or disease in the wife, both leading to infertility. Regarding ancestral tomb issues and conflicting birth years, these two cannot be remedied by medicine. If the husband is ill or the wife diseased, medicinal treatment is required, thus yielding effective results. However, female infertility due to concurrent illnesses stems from exhaustion damaging Qi and Blood, causing disease; or from amenorrhea, metrorrhagia, or leukorrhea, leading to disharmony of Yin and Yang Qi and irregular menstruation, resulting in infertility. Palpating the Chi pulse behind the Guan position on the right hand: if floating, it indicates Yang. If the Yang pulse is absent, there is no fertility. If the Chi pulse is faint and choppy, appearing in middle age, it indicates barrenness. If the Shaoyin pulse is like floating and tight, it indicates barrenness. If accompanied by aversion to cold, and both Cun and Chi pulses are weak and minute, it indicates barrenness. Additionally, improper care, unregulated diet, exposure to wind and cold, or excessive labor can cause Wind-Cold Qi to invade the menstrual blood and congeal in the Zi Zang (uterus). A cold uterus leads to infertility.
