Xu Xueshi (a scholar-official physician) said: When a woman's Tian Gui (menstruation) is overdue and her menses are irregular, either not coming for three or four months, or occurring twice in one month, accompanied by lumbar and abdominal pain. The *Su Wen* (Basic Questions) states: There are seven impairments and seven benefits. It means that when a woman reaches the age of seven times seven (forty-nine), her Tian Gui is nearly exhausted. If her menses do not follow the regular timing, it indicates an excess of blood, and it should not be forcibly stopped. The goal is simply to restore its regular timing and to avoid lumbar pain, which is considered favorable. Danggui San (Chinese Angelica Powder) should be taken.
Danggui (Chinese Angelica, Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Szechuan Lovage Rhizome, Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baishaoyao (White Peony Root, Paeoniae Radix Alba), Huangqin (Baical Skullcap Root, Scutellariae Radix), Baizhu (White Atractylodes Rhizome, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (each 0.5 liang), Shanzhuyu Rou (Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit pulp, Corni Fructus) (1.5 liang)
The above ingredients are ground into fine powder. Take 2 qian with warm wine on an empty stomach before meals, three times daily. If the body is cold, remove Huangqin and add Guixin (Cinnamon Bark, Cinnamomi Cortex) (1 liang).
To supplement Qi and consolidate blood. Treats the root Zang-organ (viscera) becoming cold due to deficiency, resulting in excessive menstrual flow. Or menstruation arriving ahead of schedule, with abdominal pain, aversion to wind, and disharmony of the Zang-fu organs.
Lurong (Deer Velvet, Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum), Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit, Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Congrong (Desertliving Cistanche, Cistanches Herba), Duzhong (Eucommia Bark, Eucommiae Cortex), Chishizhi (Red Halloysite, Halloysitum Rubrum) (each 1 liang), Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit, Evodiae Fructus), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, Zingiberis Rhizoma), Heilonggu (Black Dragon Bone, Os Draconis Fossilia Nigrum), Roudoukou (Nutmeg, Myristicae Semen), Baifuling (White Poria, Poria) (each 0.5 liang), Gandihuang (Dried Rehmannia Root, Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (1.5 liang)
The above ingredients are ground into fine powder. Cook with wine and mix with flour paste to form pills the size of Wutongzi (Sterculia seed). Take 50 to 70 pills with hot rice water on an empty stomach before meals. After one month, when Qi and blood have stabilized, remove Longgu and add Chenxiang (Chinese Eaglewood, Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) (0.5 liang). This formula can be taken long-term. It is most suitable for women past middle age.
Regarding women with edema and fullness: If it first arises from the cessation of menstruation, followed by edema of the four limbs and urinary obstruction, this is called Xue Fen (Blood Aspect). Water transforms into blood, and if the blood does not flow freely, it transforms back into water. Jiaoren Wan (Zanthoxyli Semen Pill) is appropriate. If it first arises from urinary difficulty, followed by edema of the body and face, leading to amenorrhea, this is called Shui Fen (Water Aspect). Tingli Wan (Descurainiae/Lepidii Semen Pill) should be taken.
To treat Xue Fen (Blood Aspect), use Jiaoren Wan (Zanthoxyli Semen Pill).
Jiaoren (Zanthoxyli Semen), Gansui (Gansui Root, Kansui Radix), Xusuizi (Caper Euphorbia Seed, Euphorbiae Lathyridis Semen) (peeled, ground), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Yuliren (Bush Cherry Kernel, Pruni Semen), Heiqianniu (Black Morning Glory Seed, Pharbitidis Semen), Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung, Trogopterori Faeces) (crushed, stir-fried), Danggui (Chinese Angelica, Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit, Evodiae Fructus), Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizome, Corydalis Rhizoma) (each 0.5 liang), Yuanhua (Genkwa Flower, Genkwa Flos) (soaked in vinegar overnight, stir-fried until yellow), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 1 fen), Xinpi (Arsenolite, Arsenolitum), Danfan (Chalcanthite, Chalcanthitum) (each 1 qian), Banmao (Blister Beetle, Mylabris) (stir-fried with glutinous rice until yellow, discard the rice), Qing (each 30 pieces. Remove head, feet, wings, stir-fried with glutinous rice until yellow)
The above ingredients are ground into fine powder. Mix with flour paste to form pills the size of peas. Take one pill each time, administered with Jupi Tang (Tangerine Peel Decoction).
Treats irregular menstruation, which then leads to water disorder. The water flows to the four limbs, causing generalized edema and fullness, named Xue Fen (Blood Aspect). Its presentation is similar to water disorder. If a physician treats it as water disorder, it is incorrect. This formula is appropriate. (From *Yang Sheng Bi Yong*)
Renshen (Ginseng, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Danggui (Chinese Angelica, Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Dahuang (Rhubarb, Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (wrapped in damp paper, steamed under three dou of rice, remove paper after rice is cooked, slice, bake dry), Guixin (Cinnamon Bark, Cinnamomi Cortex), Qumai Sui (Dianthus Superbus Spike, Dianthi Herba), Chishaoyao (Red Peony Root, Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Baifuling (White Poria, Poria) (each 0.5 liang), Tingli (Descurainiae/Lepidii Semen) (stir-fried, separately ground, 1 fen)
The above ingredients are ground into powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of Wutongzi (Sterculia seed). Take 15 to 20-30 pills with rice water on an empty stomach.
To treat Shui Fen (Water Aspect), use Tingli Wan (Descurainiae/Lepidii Semen Pill). (From *Wang Shi Zhi Mi Fang*)
