As for dian-kuang (mania and melancholia) in women, it is caused by deficiency of qi and blood combined with wind pathogen invasion. Humans are born from yin and yang qi. If wind pathogen lingers in yin, it becomes dian (melancholia); if it enters yang, it becomes kuang (mania). Yin and yang have deficiency and excess. When qi and blood are deficient, pathogens invade, causing the disease. Dian (melancholia) manifests as sudden onset of unhappiness, staring straight ahead, falling to the ground, foaming at the mouth, spasms of the mouth and eyes, twisting of limbs, loss of consciousness, and recovery after a long time. Kuang (mania) manifests as little sleep, lack of hunger, arrogance, claiming wisdom and virtue, laughing and singing without reason, and continuous erratic behavior. Hence, it is called dian-kuang.
Treats women with wind-pathogen-induced dian-kuang, or incessant weeping, uncontrolled laughter/singing, fearfulness, or abnormal speech.

The *Suwen* states: "Yang jue (rebellious qi) causing mania and anger, treat with Tie Luo (Iron Filings)." (Mania and anger originate from the Liver Meridian; Liver belongs to Wood. Iron Filings belong to Metal, implying using Metal to control Wood.)
I once treated a woman who saw ghosts, had abnormal speech, picked at clothes, stared straight ahead, and showed no awareness. Most physicians used mental-calming herbs without effect. I administered Yangzheng Dan (Nourish Righteousness Pill) twice, delivered with Rushiang Tang (Frankincense Decoction), assisted by Sansheng Yin (Three Lives Decoction), resulting in immediate recovery.
Another male patient suffered from this condition and also recovered with this medication. However, Yangzheng Dan is identical to Baodan Wan (Guard the Gallbladder Pill) from the *Baiyi Fang*. Baodan Wan contains no Liuhuang (Sulfur) but includes Rushiang (Frankincense), which proved effective in my practice.
