When pregnancy has reached full ten months, the fetal body is fully formed and consciousness is complete. At this stage, Qi should shift towards labor, and it is appropriate to take Slippery Birth Decoctions (Huatai Tang).
Slimming Fetus for Easy Delivery Formula. Princess Huyang experienced prolonged labor lasting several days without delivery each time. A Daoist from Mount Nan presented this formula.
Zhiqiao (Bitter Orange Fruit) from Shangzhou (2 liang), Fencao (Licorice Root) (1 liang).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Take 2 qian with boiling water. Take on an empty stomach, three times daily.
For those pregnant beyond six or seven months, taking this will facilitate easy delivery. The newborn is small and slightly dark-skinned, but flesh gradually turns white after one hundred days. Although this is Sun Simiao’s (Sun Zhenren) Slippery Birth and Easy Delivery Formula, its mechanism lies in suppressing Yang and descending Qi, ranking it as the premier among many formulas. The dosages of this formula come from *Bi Yong Fang* (The Essential Formula), which is considered correct.
Another version: Zhiqiao (Bitter Orange Fruit) 6 liang, Gancao (Licorice Root) 1 liang. (Thus, Zhiqiao is increased and Gancao is decreased, because Gancao is cold in nature and unsuitable for those not yet delivered. Take three times daily one month before delivery. Avoid climbing high toilets.)
Another version: Add Banmi (Glutinous Rice) half sheng, wash and drain, stir-fry together with herbs, then grind into powder. Mix with rice drink or plain warm water and take 1-2 qian. Wen Ju Yin added Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) and Muxiang (Aucklandia Root) in equal parts.
Treats excessive fetal size causing uterine constriction during pregnancy, making movement and delivery difficult. Taking this near term shrinks the fetus and facilitates delivery. It also treats various intestinal diseases, descends Qi, and expands the chest/diaphragm.
Zhiqiao (Bitter Orange Fruit) (5 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root) (1.5 liang), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome) (3 liang, stir-fried to remove hairs).
Grind into powder. Can also be taken with ginger decoction. If men or women suffer from cold Qi attacking and stabbing the hypochondrium causing pain, decoct with 3 cun of Congbai (Scallion White) and take. For women with Spleen Cold where Blood and Qi form masses causing pain, take mixed with hot wine. For obstruction of urination and defecation, take Baiqianniu (White Morning Glory Seed) powder mixed with decoction.
Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Zhiqiao (Bitter Orange Fruit) (2 liang each), Gancao (Licorice Root) (0.5 liang).
Treats deficiency of the Chong and Ren meridians in pregnant women, tonifying Blood and calming the fetus.
Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) (2 liang), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) (1 liang, lightly stir-fried).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Make pills using refined honey, sized like wu zi (wisteria seeds). Take 30-40 pills with warm wine.
Academic Xu stated: Generally, for pregnant women, the key lies in suppressing Yang and assisting Yin. Although there are many medicines that suppress Yang and assist Yin, herbal prescriptions for the prenatal period must avoid chaotic combinations. If Yin and Yang are intermixed, other diseases may arise. Only the Zhiqiao San (Bitter Orange Powder) from the Daoist of Mount Nan suppresses Yang, while Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) assists Yin. However, Zhiqiao San is somewhat cold; taking it alone might cause fetal coldness and abdominal pain. By combining it with Neibu Wan (Internal Tonification Pill), Yang will not become too strong, and Yin will not become too weak. Harmonizing Yin and Yang benefits fetal continuity, a point previously unmentioned by predecessors.
