Ge Gen (Puerariae Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Ben (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Chi Fu Ling (Polyporus cum Pinodia), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle, equal parts).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. For each dose, take three qian. Add one sheng of water, decoct until reduced to seven-tenths, remove the dregs, and take warm. Repeat the dose after a while.
There was also a woman with incessant diarrhea, resembling dysentery but not typical dysentery, resembling bloody stool but not true blood, with the color like turbid wine. I examined her pulse and found all six pulses deep and nearly imperceptible.
Other physicians administered hot-natured medicines and alchemical pills, which caused her to develop irritability and oppression. I first administered Baidu San (Detoxification Powder) several times, decocted with aged rice, and subsequently used Weifeng Tang (Stomach Wind Decoction) decocted with millet, resulting in a cure. Tiaozhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) without Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) can also treat this syndrome.
In cases of Zhixia Bing (Dysentery-like diseases) that have persisted for some time or are near recovery, there are often symptoms of coughing with reverse flow of Qi (Ke Ni) and vomiting with reverse flow of Qi (Ou Ni). However, Ke Ni is what the ancients referred to as Yue (Hiccups/Belching). Yue is generated by Stomach Cold; this syndrome is most critical. Other diseases also abhor Ke Ni. If this syndrome is observed, it is appropriate to use Ju Pi Gan Jiang Tang (Tangerine Peel and Dried Ginger Decoction), Ban Xia Sheng Jiang Tang (Pinellia and Fresh Ginger Decoction), or Ding Xiang Shi Di Tang (Clove and Persimmon Calyx Decoction). If the Ke Ni is due to Yang syndromes, Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) or Ju Pi Zhu Ru Tang (Tangerine Peel and Bamboo Shavings Decoction) should be used.
I once treated a patient with dysentery who suffered from incessant Ke Ni and weak, deep pulses. Other physicians' medications and moxibustion were ineffective. I administered Tui Yin San (Push Out Yin Powder), and two doses resulted in a cure.
I also treated Xu Zhubo, whose Ke Ni persisted after the recovery of dysentery, despite taking various medicines without effect. I then applied moxibustion to Qimen (Liv 14) acupoint, and he recovered in less than three moxa cones. (This acupoint is described in Volume 6, Discourse 15). In cases of Ou Ni (vomiting with reverse flow of Qi), although classics state "without Yin there is vomiting," many cases are caused by Stomach Heat, some by Stomach Cold, and some by Summer-Heat Toxin. If vomiting is due to Stomach Heat, it is appropriate to take Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), Sun Zhao Zhu Ru Tang (Sun Zhao's Bamboo Shavings Decoction), Lu Gen Tang (Reed Rhizome Decoction), Guan Ju Jie Geng Tang (Official Bureau Platycodon Decoction), or Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) added with Fresh Ginger. If vomiting is accompanied by thirst, Zhu Ling Tang (Polyporus Decoction) should be used.
I once treated a patient with incessant vomiting following dysentery; the six pulses were weak, indicating vomiting due to Stomach Cold. It also seemed that Summer-Heat Toxin was congealed in the Epigastrium. I administered Xiang Ru Wan (Mosla Pill) from the *Ju Fang* (Official Formulary), resulting in a cure.
Treating Yue (Hiccups/Belching).
Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Tong Cao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatum), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus Cortex), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), each four qian; Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), two qian.
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. For each dose, take four qian. Add one sheng of water, decoct until reduced to seven-tenths, remove the dregs, and take warm.
