Stools may be red, white, or a mixture of both, occurring day and night without limit, accompanied by tenesmus (里急后重) and severe pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions that is unbearable. It is also indicated for persistent watery diarrhea with borborygmus (肠鸣) and abdominal pain. Once, a woman suffered from dysentery for forty days and did not recover after taking various medicines. I was summoned to diagnose her pulse, which was deep and weak in all six positions. Generally, the pulse in lower jiao dysentery should be deep and weak. However, it is recommended to take Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Great Tonifying Decoction), decocted with Ginger and Jujube, add half a spoonful of white honey, boil for a few more times, and take it. She recovered.
In the summer and autumn of the Jiazi year, at the residence of Military Commissioner Zhao, his nine-year-old great-nephew suffered severely from dysentery. The pediatrician had not yet arrived, so I was asked to diagnose him. The six pulses were level and fine. Based on the symptoms, it was diagnosed as bloody dysentery. In fact, it was not true, but merely blood-tinged water. I said: I recall the indications for Tiaozhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction): it treats cases in early summer or early autumn where sudden cold attacks intense heat, knotting in the four limbs, causing high fever and headache. If cold injures the Stomach, it leads to dysentery, with stools containing blood, water, or being red, accompanied by high fever, drowsiness, and rapid pulse. This formula is appropriate. I prepared the formula, removed Rheum Palmatum (Dahuang, 大黄), and she recovered after taking it.
