Pregnant women often experience nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension, and loss of appetite. *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang) refers to this condition as "E Zu" (Morning Sickness / Obstruction due to Dislike). This syndrome is common in individuals with weak Stomach Qi accompanied by Qi stagnation. Symptoms may include a craving for sour foods or selective eating, limb fatigue, or mental restlessness and abdominal fullness; all are manifestations of this condition. However, there are differences between deficiency and excess patterns, which must be differentiated for appropriate treatment.
Generally, E Zu is caused by Stomach deficiency and Qi stagnation. Yet, some women who were not originally deficient may suddenly conceive, causing the Chong and Ren vessels to become obstructed upward, preventing Qi from descending, thus leading to symptoms such as vomiting and rebellious Qi. Why does vomiting gradually cease after about three months? It is because the fetal root grows larger, and the Zang-Fu Qi is solely dedicated to nourishing the fetus, leaving no surplus to rebel upward. In treating this condition, it is advisable to use formulas such as Banxia Fuling Tang (Pinellia and Poria Decoction) or Renshen Jupi Tang (Ginseng and Tangerine Peel Decoction), adjusting according to circumstances to stabilize the condition gradually. Only near the due date can one feel completely secure. If there is excessive phlegm in the Zhongwan region, Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) with Zhike (Aurantium Fructus) should be used, or Banxia Fuling Tang. If abdominal distension is caused by food stagnation, Xiaoheshang Yin (Minor Harmonizing Middle Infusion) with modifications is suitable. If abdominal distension is caused by rebellious Qi, Banxia Fuling Tang with added Zhike, Sugeng (Perilla Stem), and Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome) is appropriate.
Banxia Fuling Tang from *Liang Fang* (Good Prescriptions) (see *Furen Gui Ancient Formulas*) treats pregnancy complicated by Spleen-Stomach deficiency, inability to digest food, and incessant vomiting.
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, processed and fried until yellow) Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) Sharen (Amomi Fructus, each fried, 1 qian) Baifuling (Poria, 2 qian) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, fried, 0.5 qian)
Add fresh ginger, jujube, and mume fruit, decoct in water, and take one to two doses. Subsequently, administer Fuling Wan (Poria Pill).
Renshen Jupi Tang (i.e., Shenju San) (see An Tai / Calming the Fetus)
Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) (see An Tai / Calming the Fetus)
Xiaoheshang Yin (Minor Harmonizing Middle Infusion) (see An Tai / Calming the Fetus)
For those with Spleen-Stomach Qi deficiency, Wuyi Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Extraordinary Merit Powder), Liujunzi Tang (Six-Gentleman Decoction), or Renshen Jupi Tang are suitable. For those with Stomach deficiency combined with cold and frequent vomiting, Liuwei Yigong Jian (Six-Ingredient Extraordinary Merit Decoction) or Wenwei Yin (Warming the Stomach Infusion) are appropriate. For vomiting caused by Liver-Kidney Yang deficiency, Liyin Jian (Nourishing Yin Decoction) is indicated.
Wuyi Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Extraordinary Merit Powder) (see *Gu Fang Ba Zhen · Bu Zhen* / Ancient Formulas Eight Arrays · Tonifying Array) treats Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold, lack of appetite, vomiting, or chronic cough, along with facial edema, rebellious Qi, and abdominal distension.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, fried) Fuling (Poria) Zhigancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1 qian)
Add fresh ginger and jujube, decoct in water, and take orally.
Liujunzi Tang (Six-Gentleman Decoction) (see Menstrual Abdominal Pain)
Liuwei Yigong Jian (Six-Ingredient Extraordinary Merit Decoction) (see *Xin Fang Ba Zhen · Re Zhen* / New Formulas Eight Arrays · Heat Array) treats Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold with vomiting, diarrhea, and slight stagnation.
This is simply Wuyi Yigong San with the addition of Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma).
Wenwei Yin (Warming the Stomach Infusion) (see Blood Deficiency Menstrual Disorder)
Liyin Jian (Nourishing Yin Decoction) (see Blood Cold Delayed Menses)
Li Chan (styled Lizai) stated: Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) is the principal herb for invigorating the Spleen and resolving phlegm stagnation. In cases of Spleen-Stomach deficiency with vomiting, or phlegm-saliva obstruction, lack of appetite, and fetal instability, Fuling Banxia Tang (Poria and Pinellia Decoction) must be used, with doubled Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). Because Banxia, Baizhu, Fuling, Chenpi, and Sharen are effective in calming the fetal Qi and strengthening the Spleen and Stomach; I have frequently verified its efficacy.
