During gestation, the infant develops and grows by inheriting the Qi of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). The five Zang organs, six Fu organs, and all skeletal structures are fully formed. It must rely on amniotic fluid for nourishment. Once the vital energy is sufficient, natural delivery occurs. Upon leaving the maternal body, there is liquid toxin in the mouth, and the cry has not yet emerged. One should urgently use soft cotton wrapped around a finger to wipe away the foul juices from the mouth. Although this is a good method, in hurried situations, it may not be done according to proper procedures. Ancients had methods using Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Zhumi (Cinnabar Honey), and Gancao (Licorice Root), which were very effective in preventing foul matter from being swallowed and lodging in the Heart. If one encounters epidemic seasonal pathogens (Tianxing Shiqi) leading to prolonged fever that does not subside, the pathogen attacks the Heart. The Heart governs the blood vessels; when affected by heat, the blood scatters and overflows into the Stomach. The Stomach governs the muscles, and the pathogen manifests externally, resulting in sores and rashes. This affliction is unavoidable for people of all ages. If the method of wiping the newborn's mouth is followed, one can avoid the disaster of smallpox/variolae. Even if infected by seasonal pathogens, only minor skin sores and fine rashes will appear, which are easy to manage, bringing fortune to the child. Yang Shi stated: If the mouth is not wiped immediately after birth, foul impurities enter the abdomen, causing abdominal distension, shortness of breath, and an inability to suckle milk. In such cases, Fuling Wan (Poria Pill) with modifications should be used. Another method for expelling fetal toxins is to administer strongly brewed Danchi (Light Fermented Soybean) juice upon delivery, which is excellent. One must not give Chen Sha (Cinnabar), Huanglian, or Qingfen (Calomel).
Zhumi Method (from Ge Hong's *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*): For a newborn, first use the Huanglian-Gancao method to wipe the mouth and expel foul juices. After a while, administer Zhumi to settle the soul and calm the spirit.
Zhusha (Cinnabar) (amount equivalent to one large soybean):
Grind the Cinnabar finely. Mix with honey (amount equivalent to one clam shell) and apply to the infant's mouth. This not only settles the Heart and calms the spirit but also resolves toxic substances, preventing variolae throughout life.
Huanglian Method: Near term, finely chop Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), crush it, wrap it in cotton, soak it in boiling water, and use it to wipe the mouth.
Gancao Method: Finely chop a small amount of Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) in advance. During labor or bed rest, wrap it in cotton, place it in a cup, and steep in boiling water, covering it tightly. At the time of delivery, urgently wrap a finger in soft cotton, dip it in the Gancao juice, and wipe the infant's mouth. Then proceed with the Huanglian method and the Zhumi method.
Niuhuang Method: Similar to the Zhumi method, but with a small addition of Niuhuang (Bovis Calculus). This benefits the Liver and Gallbladder, clears heat, stabilizes the spirit, stops convulsions, repels evil qi, and eliminates various diseases in infants.
Fuling Wan (Poria Pill) (from *Zhizhi Fang*): Treats infants at birth whose cries have not yet emerged. Urgently wipe their mouths by hand to ensure all foul blood is cleared and not swallowed; otherwise, no other illnesses will arise. If delayed, foul impurities enter the abdomen, causing abdominal distension, shortness of breath, and inability to suckle. Or, if cold was contracted in the womb, it causes abdominal pain and refusal to suckle.
Chifuling (Red Poria), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (remove this if the pattern is Cold, add Baishao/Paeoniae Radix Alba), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (stir-fried).
Grind the above herbs equally into powder. Form pills using refined honey, sized like wu-tzu (mulberry seeds). Administer one pill dissolved in breast milk each time.
