(Attached: Tetanus and Chicken-Claw Wind)
The syndrome of wind-stroke in infants and children is the same as in adults. Infants and children have weak qi and blood, and fragile, thin muscles. If the regulation of cold and warmth is improper, the skin and pores, taking advantage of the deficiency, are invaded by wind pathogen. Symptoms include stiffness and straightening of the four limbs, open mouth with rapid breathing, and excessive accumulation of phlegm and saliva. Although this resembles jing-xian (infantile convulsions and epilepsy), if the patient wakes up intermittently after an attack and has soft body muscles, it is xian (epilepsy); if there is opisthotonos (backward bending of the back) and unconsciousness, it is wind-stroke. Qibo said: "Wind is the chief of all diseases." There are four major categories: first, pian-ku (hemiplegia); second, feng-pai (wind invasion causing painless body and inability to control the four limbs); third, feng-yi (sudden loss of consciousness); fourth, feng-bi (generalized numbness). This is a general overview. Whenever "Zhong" (strike/attack) is mentioned, it refers to a sudden attack by wind pathogen. Strike on the Fu organs can be treated; strike on the Zang organs is difficult to treat. Symptoms such as erect hair, foaming at the mouth, sweating like pearls, urinary incontinence, face red like spots, and blackish-blue head and face are all signs of untreatable conditions. Observe the Renzhong point (GV26): if white on the left and right, upper and lower, it is treatable; if one side is black and the other red, death ensues. Another condition is tetanus (po-shang-feng), which presents similarly to wind-stroke and shares similar treatment methods. External application of plasters and internal administration of formulas for releasing the exterior, dispelling wind, and resolving phlegm are used. Additionally, this condition may arise from improper sweating or purging treatments in Shanghan (cold damage disease). It manifests as opisthotonos, spasms of the four limbs, and body rigidity, named Chi Bing (spasm disease). Absence of sweat indicates Gang-Chi (stiff spasm); presence of sweat indicates Rou-Chi (flexible spasm). This also resembles wind-stroke; see details in the Shanghan section. First, rub the teeth with fresh ginger to open the mouth before administering medication.
Jiuji Xixian San (Emergency Rescue Thin Saliva Powder) is effective for wind-stroke, Zhong-e (sudden evil attack), tetanus, and Chi Bing.
Jin Fan (Alum, bright quality, 1 qian) Zhu Ya Zao Jiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit, 1 piece)
Grind together into powder. Take 3-5 fen each time, mixed with warm water.
Wuyao Shunqi San (Aucklandia Decoction for Directing Qi) treats various wind syndromes in children, where wind attacks the four limbs and causes generalized numbness, facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes), and dysarthria. This medicine unblocks the qi channels and is very effective when taken first.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) Wuyao (Linderae Radix) Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (each 8 fen) Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 6 fen) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 3 fen)
Add three slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), decoct in water. In cold weather, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 5 fen).
Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continuation Decoction) states that wind-stroke is not caused by external wind pathogen but by deficiency of middle qi leading to self-disease. These two formulas treat the four types of wind-stroke very quickly. For pediatric wind syndromes, caused by parental negligence, sleeping in drafts, or early exposure to wind during exanthematous diseases, the middle qi becomes deficient, making it easy for wind pathogen to invade and cause these syndromes, or even develop into Li Feng (severe leprosy-like wind) which is untreatable. There are three levels: striking the blood vessels causes facial paralysis; striking the Fu organs causes inability to lift the four limbs; striking the Zang organs is untreatable. They have achieved miraculous results for men, women, infants, and children.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) (each 1 qian) Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (each 3 fen)
Add three slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), decoct in water. For no sweat and aversion to cold, double Mahuang, Xingren, and Fangfeng; for sweat and aversion to wind, add Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Xingren, and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma); for limb traction/spasms, add Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), and Jiangcan (Bombyx Batrycatus); for fever and irritability, add Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma).
Paifeng Tang (Expelling Wind Decoction) treats coma from wind-stroke, phlegm obstruction causing aphonia, mental confusion, and is also effective for Chi Bing and tetanus.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Baixianpi (Dictamni Cortex) Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Fuling (Poria) (each 8 fen) Guanzi Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 3 fen)
Add three slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), decoct in water.
Huangu Dan (Bone-Replacing Pill) treats wind-stroke paralysis, facial paralysis, and is effective for all types of jing-xian (convulsions/epilepsy) and An Feng (hidden wind).
I possess Huangu Dan, passed down as a secret to Ji Chi, it opens the patient's heart/mind and supports the back of the elderly. Strong qi extends life, clear spirit reduces sleep needs. Zhang Xianweng of Nanshan lived to 380 years old. Sangbaipi (Morus Alba Bark), Maoyu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Chuanxiong, Baizhi, Xianren (Immortal Herb - likely referring to a specific local herb or metaphorical), Fangfeng, Shouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix), Manjingzi (Viticis Semen) (each 1 liang). Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Wuwei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), Zhusha (Cinnabar) (each 5 qian). Huaiguoz (Sophorae Tonkinensis Fructus, 1 liang). Shexiang (Moschus), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum) (each 5 fen). Mahuang (decocted into paste).
Take pure powders, use Mahuang paste to make pills. Each liang makes ten pills, half dose for children, coated with Zhusha (Cinnabar). Take one pill each time, crush it, soak in half cup of boiling wine, cover tightly to prevent evaporation. Take after meals and before sleep, cover with clothes to induce sweating.
