The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: Excessive eating leads to sweating originating from the Stomach; fright that depletes essence leads to sweating originating from the Heart; carrying heavy loads and traveling long distances leads to sweating originating from the Kidney; excessive sexual activity leads to sweating also originating from the Kidney; running fast and fear lead to sweating originating from the Liver; physical labor involving shaking or movement leads to sweating originating from the Spleen. The so-called "stealing sweat" (Dao Han, night sweats) is like a thief secretly peeking and stealing while people are breathing (referring to sweating during sleep). Sweating during sleep indicates a syndrome of Yin deficiency, primarily treated with Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Oyster Shell Powder. Spontaneous sweating (Zi Han), which occurs frequently without obvious cause, indicates a syndrome of Yang deficiency, primarily treated with Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) combined with Liu Huang Tang (Six Yellow Decoction). These conditions arise because Qi and Blood are internally deficient, and the Couli (pores/skin texture) are not tight. As stated, when Yin is deficient, Yang must encroach; when Yang is deficient, Yin must take advantage. Sweat is the fluid of the Heart; when Heart Qi is deficient, sweat leaks externally. If left untreated for a long time, excessive sweating will lead to the loss of Yang, resulting in sallow complexion, emaciation, dry skin, and brittle hair, eventually giving rise to other symptoms. In cases where the nursing mother is robust and the infant is physically strong, sweating during sleep regardless of day or night, though frequent, is harmless and requires no medication.
