The back belongs to Yang, and the abdomen belongs to Yin. The Shu points (Acupoints where the Qi of the Zang organs is transported) of the five Zang organs are all located on the back. If the wet nurse fails to care for the infant properly, exposing the child's bare back to the wind, the back will be struck by exogenous Wind pathogens (Ke Feng). If this pathogenic factor is not resolved and dispersed in time, Cold Qi will enter the bone Shu, causing the back to protrude high like a turtle shell; hence it is called "Turtle Back" (Gui Bei). Alternatively, if the infant's bones are tender and soft, sitting them up too early can also cause kyphosis (stooping). Early treatment is necessary to prevent the formation of chronic, incurable diseases.

The feet and knees are the sites where the meridians of the Three Yin channels run and converge. This area has abundant Qi but scarce Blood. When invaded by Cold Qi, the Qi and Blood knot and fail to disperse. The condition initially presents with alternating chills and fever. Due to failure to disperse the pathogen, Cold Qi lodges within the knee bones, causing pain day and night, which is lighter in the morning and heavier at night. The muscles of the upper and lower legs waste away, while the knees become coarse and swollen, resembling the knee of a crane; thus it is named accordingly. It is also called "Crane Knee Wind" (He Xi Feng) or "Drumstick Wind" (Gu Chui Feng); the pathology is the same, but the names differ. One must absolutely avoid using cold-natured topical applications, nor should one arbitrarily use knives or needles. Misuse of these methods often leads to untreatable conditions, which is truly pitiable. Those who survive may suffer lifelong disability. Topical applications should be warm in nature, and internal medications should also be warming. Once the Cold Qi dissipates, the swelling will subside naturally.
