Figure of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian
The Lung meridian originates in the middle jiao (Middle Burner), emerges at the tip of the thumb, and transmits to the Large Intestine meridian.
The meridian of Hand-Taiyin Lung originates in the middle jiao (located at the Zhongwan point in the stomach region), descends to connect with the Large Intestine, circles around the cardia (the "stomach opening" refers to the cardia), ascends through the diaphragm, and attaches to the Liver. It branches out horizontally from below the axilla, descends along the medial aspect of the upper arm, running anterior to the Heart meridian of Hand-Shaoyin and the Pericardium meridian of Hand-Jueyin, descends into the cubital fossa (i.e., Chize [LU5]), follows the lower border of the radius on the medial aspect of the forearm (where "bone pointing to the thumb daily" refers to the radius, and "inner" refers to the medial side), enters the Cun Kou (i.e., Jingqu [LU8]), ascends to the Thenar eminence (following Yuji [LU10, from the medial side posterior to the first metacarpophalangeal joint), and emerges at the tip of the thumb (referring to Shaoshang [LU11]). Its branch arises from behind the wrist, goes straight to the medial border of the index finger, and emerges at its tip.
The Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian has less blood and more Qi. The *Nan Jing* states: "Meridians have 'Shi Dong' diseases and 'Suo Sheng Bing' diseases." "Shi Dong" refers to Qi-level pathology; "Suo Sheng Bing" refers to Blood-level pathology. When pathogenic factors are in the Qi, the Qi manifests disease first; when in the Blood, the Blood manifests disease later. "Shi Dong" results in: lung distension and fullness, abdominal bloating with wheezing and coughing, pain in the supraclavicular fossa (Quepen), and in severe cases, crossing both hands over the chest with visual blurring or faintness, known as Bi Jue (Arm Jue). It primarily treats "Suo Sheng Bing" of the Lung: cough with qi rebellion, asthma, thirst, vexation, chest fullness, pain along the anteromedial aspect of the arm, and heat in the palm. If Lung Qi is excessive, there is shoulder and back pain, sweating upon exposure to wind, frequent urination with scanty volume; if Lung Qi is deficient, there is shoulder and back pain, aversion to cold, shortness of breath, sighing, changes in urine color, and sudden involuntary defecation.
Figure of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian
The Large Intestine meridian originates at the tip of the thumb, runs alongside the nostrils, and transmits to the Stomach meridian.
The meridian of Hand-Yangming Large Intestine originates at the radial side of the tip of the index finger (i.e., Shangyang [LI1]), follows the radial border of the finger, emerges between the two bones at Hegu (LI4), ascends into the space between the two tendons, follows the radial border of the forearm (along Yangxi [LI5]), enters the lateral aspect of the elbow (Quchi [LI11]), follows the lateral anterior aspect of the upper arm, ascends to the shoulder, emerges anterior to the acromion (the "acromion" refers to the bone at the end of the shoulder), ascends past the intersection of the Zhu Gu (shoulder wells such as Jianjing [GB21]), descends into the Quepen (supraclavicular fossa, where Quepen points are located in the depression above the clavicle), connects with the Lung, descends through the diaphragm, and attaches to the Large Intestine. Its branch arises from the Quepen, goes straight up the neck (the neck is the stem of the head), passes through the cheek, enters the lower teeth, circles the lips, crosses at Renzhong (Shuigou [GV26]), moving from left to right and right to left, ascending to flank both sides of the nostrils.
The Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian has abundant blood and abundant Qi. "Shi Dong" results in: toothache and swelling of the gums. It primarily treats diseases arising from disorders of Jin Ye (Body Fluids): yellow eyes, dry mouth, epistaxis, throat obstruction, pain in the anterior shoulder, and pain with dysfunction of the index and thumb fingers.
