The patient's sister had amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) for eighty days. Every time food and drink entered her stomach, she experienced immediate pain, which only ceased after complete vomiting. She frequently regurgitated acidic fluid, presenting with heat in the Upper Jiao (upper body/organ systems) and cold in the Lower Jiao (lower body/organ systems). Her bowel movements occurred only once every half month, and she had been unable to eat or drink for forty days. All six pulses were rapid; the left pulse was slippery, and the right pulse was weak and soft. The sister managed household affairs because her husband was often ill and lacked worldly wisdom, leading to depression. The illness arose from excessive overthinking, raising concern that it might develop into Ge Syndrome (dysphagia/esophageal obstruction). Currently, dry constipation and regurgitation of acid are signs of Ge Syndrome. It is urgent to relieve emotional stagnation, otherwise, medicinal efficacy will be limited. Initially, one pill of Dingling Wan was administered, stopping the vomiting immediately. Subsequently, Wendan Decoction (Phlegm-Calming Decoction) was used with added Dahuapi (Areca Peel) and Jiang Lianhuang (Ginger-processed Coptis Rhizome), completely resolving the pain and vomiting. Later, Erchen Decoction (Two-Aged Decoction) was modified with Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Tiaoqin (Scutellaria Root), Shanzhiren (Gardenia Seed), Danshen (Salvia Root), and Sharen (Amomum Fruit) for two months of regulation. Menstruation resumed, bowel movements became moist, and Ge Syndrome did not recur.
Sun Huaye presented with a deep, wiry, and rapid pulse. He suffered from sore throat, swelling at the Jiache acupoint (ST6), distending pain in both Taiyang areas (temples), generalized distending pain throughout the body, aversion to cold, and fever. This indicated Phlegm-Fire surging upward transforming into Wind-Heat, likely about to generate toxicity. Urgent treatment was required. A prescription of Bohe (Mint), Gancao (Licorice Root), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Niu Bang Zi (Arctium Fruit), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), and Xuanshen (Scrophularia Root) was prescribed. Recovery was achieved after one dose.
Xiong Brother expectorated several mouthfuls of blood whenever he exerted himself excessively or consumed too much alcohol. Both Cun (inch) pulses were short and weak, while Guan (middle) and Chi (cubit) pulses were flooding and rapid. This indicated Phlegm-Fire in the Stomach and Yin-Fire in the Lower Jiao, caused by damage from alcohol and sexual indulgence during his prime. He was treated with Danshen (Salvia Root) and Huashi (Talcum), each 3 qian; Baishao Yao (White Peony Root), 2 qian; Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Taoren (Peach Seed), Ziwan (Aster Root), and Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), each 1 qian; Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), 7 fen; and Gancao (Licorice Root), 5 fen, decocted and taken orally. His condition stabilized.
Wu Sui, a timber merchant from Shexian County, was seventy years old when residing in Wuxing. After laboring in the rain and sweating, he bathed in cold water, resulting in fever, thirst, mutual distending pain between the heart and back, prolonged urination with red urine, yellow tongue coating, insomnia at night, eyes like gold, and generalized jaundice (yellowing of skin). Physicians in Wuxing fled upon seeing him, refusing to prescribe medication, claiming his advanced age made him unsuitable for such a severe disease. They advised him to return home, where he earnestly sought my treatment. I diagnosed a floating and rapid left pulse, a soggy and weak right pulse, and a rate of six beats per breath in both hands. I stated: "This is Jaundice due to Damp-Heat." Although the illness was severe and the patient elderly, the presence of these symptoms dictates the use of corresponding medicines; do not panic. I prescribed Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), 3 qian; Jiuhuangqin (Alcohol-processed Scutellaria Root), Gegen (Pueraria Root), Qinghao (Artemisia Annua Herb), Xiangru (Elsholtzia Herb), and Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), each 1 qian; Renshen (Ginseng Root), 7 fen; and Fencacao (Licorice Root), 5 fen. After two consecutive doses, he sweated slightly in the evening and slept well. By early morning, the fever had subsided by half, and the tongue coating became slightly pale, moist, and no longer scorched. Residual heat in the chest and diaphragm caused irritability, and the body remained yellow. I prescribed Zhuru (Bamboo Shavings), Qinghao (Artemisia Annua Herb), and Gegen (Pueraria Root), each 1 qian; Renshen (Ginseng Root), Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), each 8 fen; and Baishao Yao (White Peony Root), 6 fen. After two doses, the fever receded, appetite improved, and spirit suddenly increased. Finally, Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Decoction for Reinforcing the Middle and Augmenting Qi) was modified with Qinghao (Artemisia Annua Herb), Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root) for ten doses, completely eliminating the yellow discoloration of the eyes and skin. The physicians in Wuxing admired the precision of this treatment and copied the prescriptions for dissemination.
