Mr. Cheng Longqiu experienced fever, thirst, nausea, and vomiting upon every movement, with chronic pain in the waist and Huantiao (GB30) acupoint. His pulse was deep and fine on the left, slippery at the cun position on the right, and soggy and weak at the guan and chi positions on the right. This indicates Phlegm-Fire in the Upper Jiao and Damp-Heat in the Lower Jiao. The treatment should first promote diuresis to relieve muscle tension, followed by tonification. Initially, Coicis Semen (Yiyiren, 薏苡仁) 3 qian, Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Weilingxian, 威灵仙), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏), Tso-wu-yeh (Wuyaoye, 乌药叶), and Cornus Officinalis Bark (Zijingpi, 紫荆皮) each 1 qian, Carthami Flos (Honghua, 红花), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guipi, 桂皮), and Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji, 防己) each 5 fen were decocted in water for oral administration. Externally, a honey pill composed of Antlerum Corium (Lurong, 鹿茸), Ossum Tigridis (Hugu, 虎骨), Bombyx Batryticatus (Wancansha, 晚蚕砂), Curculiginis Rhizoma (Xianmao, 仙茅), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏), Testudinis et Plastrum (Guiban, 龟板), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, 牛膝), and Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong, 杜仲) was taken, leading to stabilization.
Mr. Wang Songgang originally suffered injury from excessive alcohol consumption, presenting with night-time fever, coughing with hemoptysis, anorexia, and qi stagnation in the left hypochondrium. His pulse was hollow (Kou) at the left cun, choppy at the left guan, and weak at the left chi; short at the right cun, and slippery at the right guan. This indicates flourishing Phlegm-Fire in the Stomach and deficiency of both Qi and Blood. The appropriate approach is to first clear the Stomach and protect the Lung, followed by strong tonification. Decoction of Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, 麦冬), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu, 知母), Lapis Calcitae (Han Shuishishi, 寒水石), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Asteris Radix (Ziwan, 紫菀), Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参), Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi, 牡丹皮), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao, 白芍药), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu, 贝母), and Mori Cortex (Sangbaipi, 桑白皮) was administered. After one dose, bleeding persisted; Ceae Folium (Cebaiye, 侧柏叶) and Imperatae Rhizoma (Maogen, 茅根) were added, and after four doses, bleeding ceased. Four months later, anger exacerbated the condition, causing blood to move recklessly again, with inability to sleep on the left side. A decoction of Persicae Semen (Taoren, 桃仁), Talcum (Huashi, 滑石), Carthami Flos (Honghua, 红花), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参), Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu, 贝母), Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhi, 山栀), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu, 香附), Aurantii Fructus Viridis (Qingpi, 青皮), and Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi, 牡丹皮) was given, resulting in stabilization. I instructed his son: "Inform your mother that matters bringing joy may be shared with your father, but matters causing distress must never be heard by him." The Liver stores Blood; moreover, with significant blood loss, Liver Fire becomes dry and燥, and the Heart Master is insufficient. The *Neijing* states: "If the Ruler is not clear, the Twelve Officials are in danger." One must guard against this carefully. Inability to sleep on the left indicates Liver distension, which causes me great concern for your father. Three years later, the illness indeed recurred due to anger, and he sent for me. I firmly declined, saying: "I had never made such instructions. The current severity of the illness exceeds my capacity to treat." He passed away within ten days.
