Mr. Zheng Chunhuan, during his time as a Chunyuan (Shengyuan, a degree holder in the imperial examination system), suffered from headache accompanied by internal heat, which was worse at night. He sweated profusely like flowing water, continuing throughout the night without stopping. His urine was scanty and dark red, with a yellow coating on the tongue, and distending pain in the right hypochondrium. Initially, one dose of Guizhi Baitu Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Gypsum Decoction) was administered to resolve the internal heat and收敛 (astringe) the floating sweat. Subsequently, Baijiezi (Brassicae Semen, White Mustard Seed) 1 qian, Gualou Ren (Trichosanthis Semen, Melon Seed) 4 qian, Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, Immature Bitter Orange), Jianghuang (Curcumae Radix, Turmeric), and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, Coptis) each 8 fen were decocted in water for oral administration. Additionally, Danggui Longhui Wan (Angelica Sinensis and Gardenia Pill) 1.5 qian was given orally to purge the excess, after which the hypochondriac pain was relieved.
Madam Xu Tianmu, Grand Secretary, experienced stifling oppression in the chest and diaphragm, loss of appetite, cough with copious phlegm, occasional nausea, and a lack of clarity in the upper jiao head and eyes. She had long been a vegetarian. Her pulse at both cun (inch) and guan (bar) positions was slippery and large like beans, while the chi (cubit) positions were deep and faint. This indicated a Phlegm-Fire syndrome. Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) was modified with Jiuhuangqin (Scutellariae Radix fried with wine), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, Peppermint), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, Przewalski's Pecan Root), Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus, Bitter Orange), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, Atractylodes Lancea), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma, Cyperus), Yujin (Curcumae Longae Radix, Curcuma Longa), and Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Szechwan Lovage Root). After regulation, she recovered.
Zhang Lichuan suffered from cough with copious phlegm, a bluish complexion, tidal fever, emaciation, an irritable nature, and stubbornness. Due to repeated failures in the imperial examinations, he fell ill from melancholy. Furthermore, after his recent marriage, his diet was irregular. Palpation revealed a slippery and large pulse at the right guan position, while the remaining parts of the pulse lacked spirit/vitality. Moreover, sores had developed at the anus, ulcerating and discharging pus and blood. I stated: "This is an extreme yang disease descending downward." According to medical principles, it is untreatable. Indeed, he died within less than a month.
Madam Chen Yangshan, Mr. Chen Yangshan's wife, experienced massive vaginal bleeding two months after a miscarriage. Leukorrhea and white foam flowed like a stream, accompanied by dawn diarrhea (wugeng xie xie), facial edema, afternoon fever, thirst, and a bluish-yellow complexion. The right hand pulse was hollow and large, approaching a Kou (empty) pulse, while the left hand pulse was soft and weak. Based on this, it was determined to be a sign of extreme deficiency. There was still stasis in the Blood Sea (Chong and Ren vessels) that had not been fully expelled, causing new blood to fail to return to its source. Any slight movement of qi resulted in bleeding as severe as a uterine hemorrhage (beng lou). The Spleen is the meridian that controls blood; when deficient, it cannot constrain the blood. Coupled with facial edema and poor appetite, the Spleen deficiency was severe. Urgent warming and tonification were required, and recovery might be possible. Renshen (Ginseng Radix, Ginseng) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Atractylodes Macrocephala) each 2 qian, Jiangtan (Zingiberis Rhizoma Carbonisatum, Charred Ginger), Fencao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Licorice) each 5 fen, Fuling (Poria, Poria Cocos), and Xiangfu each 8 fen, along with Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Salvia) 1 qian (stir-fried), were decocted in water for oral administration. After four doses, the diarrhea stopped. Subsequently, Renshen and Baizhu each 2 qian, Fuling, Danshen, Huangqi (Astragali Radix, Astragalus), and Puhuang (Typhae Pollen, Cattail Pollen) each 1 qian, Jiangtan, Zelan Ye (Lycopus Japonicus Herba, Bugleweed), and Fencao each 5 fen were used for regulation, leading to complete recovery.
