Dai Fuan said: All wind diseases causing tremors and dizziness belong to Liver Wood. Trembling, vertigo, eye stiffness, and muscle spasms are all manifestations of the Jueyin Liver channel. The Classic says: When Wind pathogen prevails, use Pungent-Cool (Xin Liang) herbs to pacify it. Why do people in the world use Hot-natured drugs to treat Wind pathogen?
The eyeball rotates like a winch, a condition rarely heard of. The pupil cannot be straight, how can it remain centered? It droops upward or downward, tilts left or right, or moves frequently. This is driven by Qi movement, beyond human control. The sinews and vessels tremble and twitch, tight and difficult to extend. Immediate regulation and treatment are necessary to prevent deep damage.
This syndrome is called "disharmony of the Six Qi" affecting the eyes, or caused by Wind pathogen striking. One feels as if the brain sinews are being pulled; the Shen Zhu (Divine Pearl, referring to the pupil/black part of the eye) does not wait for one's will to turn but suddenly looks up, then suddenly down. It wants to look down but cannot, wants to look up but cannot, or shifts left or right at any time. This is because the rotation and collision are unpredictable, with sinews and vessels trembling, alternating between relaxation and tension, causing harm through traction. Mild cases result in Qi stabilizing, yet the pulse remains biased and the eyeball deviated, resembling the state where the Divine Pearl is about to reverse. Severe cases involve reversal, leading to Fan Bei (reversal of the pupil, i.e., severe strabismus). It is suitable to take:
Gouteng Yin Zi (Hookvine Decoction) (Treats sudden palpitations and rolling eyes.)
Gouteng (Flemingia Semisemen, roasted, 5 fen) Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed) Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, roasted, 3 fen each) Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 7 fen each)
Quanxie (Scorpio, fried to remove toxicity, 1 qian) Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, fried, 1.2 qian)
Crush the above into pieces. Use two zhong of clear water and three slices of ginger. Decoct until eight fen remains. Take at any time.
Both eyeballs deviating inwardly (Tong Jing), recognized rarely by mediocre physicians. This is an injury from childhood, not a disease acquired in adulthood. Wanting to look east but looking west instead; wanting to look out but looking in instead. This is due to the brain sinews being twisted. If treated promptly when contracted by Wind-Heat in childhood, there might be no permanent loss. Seeking medical help only after growing up is futile.
This syndrome refers to deviation of the eyeball and improper vision starting in childhood, which cannot be cured in adulthood. There are various causes: During the tender age, Eye disease caused by Wind-Heat attacks and damages the brain sinews, causing them to contract sharply; Due to Infantile Convulsions (Jing Feng) or Tian Diao (a type of pediatric convulsion with upward gaze), twisting the sinews and collaterals; failure to disperse Wind-Heat leads to coagulation and fixation of the meridians; Because the child sleeps near a bright window and stares sideways for too long, causing the sinews and vessels to stagnate and fixate, leading to deviation. For all such cases, treatment should be undertaken while the duration is short and Blood and Qi are not yet fixed. If the duration is long, and the sinews, collaterals, Blood, and Qi have already fixed, it will no longer be curable. It is suitable to take:
Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill) (Treats infantile Tong Jing, all caused by accidental blows, hitting the head, face, forehead, or corners, combined with falling, causing the child's Liver to receive Shock-Wind, resulting in both eyes turning inward, named Tong Jing. Suitable to take this pill.)
Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) Zhenzhu (Margarita) Tianzhuhuang (Calamus Tuber) Hupo (Electrum) Qingdai (Indicum) Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) (All equal parts) Baifuzi (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix, processed)
Dilong (Pheretima) (Equal parts) Shexiang (Moschus) (A small amount) Jinbo (Lamina Aurum) (Appropriate amount as coating) Suheli You (Styrax Oil) Xiangyou (Sesame Oil)
The above first nine ingredients are each ground into extremely fine powder and mixed together. Decoct fine Gancao Gao (Codonopsis Caulis or Glycyrrhizae Radix tip) to obtain two-thirds of the juice. Then add Suheli You and Xiangyou, one-third of the volume. Mix evenly. Combine to form pills. Coat with Jinbo. According to size, dissolve and take with Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction). Nursing mothers and children must avoid all alcohol, wheat products, pork, and spicy, hot, phlegm-generating foods.
