Various internal and external etiological factors are numerous and diverse. Some arise from the stagnation of the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Overthinking, Sorrow, Fear, Fright) or invasion by the Six Exogenous Pathogens (Wind, Cold, Summer-heat, Dampness, Dryness, Fire), as well as excessive emotional distress. The symptoms tend to remit and recur, making them difficult to treat. Others result from external Wind pathogen and Dryness-Fire consuming and restricting, leading to disharmony between Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi), manifesting as lagophthalmos, astringency, and hazy opacities. Treatment should employ dispersing and harmonizing methods according to the syndrome. If caused by other diseases invading or injuries from foreign objects affecting the eyes, although the severity varies internally and externally, generally speaking: for stagnant Fire, dispersion is indicated; for Qi stagnation, guidance is indicated; for severe Dryness and Wind, differentiation of deficiency and excess is required for regulation. This prevents exogenous pathogens from lingering and becoming chronic stubborn diseases.
"O Wind, O Wind, how many disasters you bring! Before harming the body, you first damage the eyes." Some present with ectropion, red and rotting eyelid margins; others cause facial deviation accompanied by tremors and convulsions; some develop internal cataracts with fleshy growths. The internal and external conditions vary in severity and are harder to resolve than common syndromes. Dispersing Wind, invigorating Blood, nourishing Yin essence is superior to seeking immortality through divination.
This syndrome refers to eye disease occurring in patients suffering from Wind disorders. Wind corresponds to Wood, which corresponds to the Liver. The Liver opens into the eyes, originating from one Qi. Prolonged illness leads to intense Heat. Why? Because Wood generates Fire. When Fire is excessive, Blood is scorched by Wind and Fire, burning continuously and causing consumption. Moreover, prolonged illness inevitably generates stagnation, which further generates Fire. Fire nature ascends; extreme Heat generates Wind. They generate each other cyclically, giving rise to both internal and external opacities. Thus, Wind-Wood diseases manifest due to various causes. Some have short duration and shallow stagnation, presenting as facial deviation; some affect the Spleen, causing eyelid eversion with dampness, redness, and rotting; some suffer from tremors due to Blood deficiency and weak sinews; some indulge in dry and hot foods, allowing Fire pathogen to disrupt clear, harmonious Qi, forming internal opacities due to stagnation; some have Wind dominance and Blood stasis, forming external opacities such as pterygium. Additionally, taking aromatic-dry medicines, indulging in alcohol and pungent foods, and poor self-care lead to further Yin depletion and increased Fire dryness, which increases Wind dominance, resulting in severe coagulation and stasis. Treatment must address each syndrome and attack the root. Internal and external acute conditions differ. Generally, for eye disease caused by Wind, dispelling Wind is primary, clearing Fire is secondary. Otherwise, if the source is not cleared, how can the flow stop? Although eye symptoms may temporarily recede, they will surely return. Even with repeated treatments, if Wind is not removed and Fire is not extinguished, the eyes will never fully recover. Suitable prescriptions include:
Zhengrong Tang (Correcting Contour Decoction): Treats facial paralysis with mouth and eye deviation, correcting appearance upon administration.
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Baifuzi (Typhonii Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Danshenxing (Arisaematis Cum Bile), Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Huangsongjie (Fuwenshen Xinmu, equal parts).
Decoct these ingredients in two units of water with three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) until reduced to eight-tenths. Strain, add one unit of wine, and take orally.
In this formula, Qianghuo and Fangfeng dispel Wind; Danshenxing and Banxia resolve Phlegm; raw Ganqing clears Heat; Qinjiao nourishes sinews; Baifuzi and Baijiangcan target the face; Mugua and Songjie relax tense sinews; Shengjiang disperses Wind pathogen; Wine promotes the action of herbs. After ten doses, the condition resolves. I dare to share this insight for those who understand.
Banxia Fuling Tianma Tang (Pinellia, Poria, and Gastrodia Decoction): Treats Phlegm-Jue headache, vertigo, blurred vision, irritability, nausea, shortness of breath, mental confusion, inability to open eyes, feeling like being in wind and clouds, splitting headache, heavy body, cold limbs.
Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, honey-fried), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked in rice water), Chuanpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Baifuling (Poria, fried Shenqu, five fen each), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried, one qian), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, ginger-processed), Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, stir-fried, 1.5 qian each), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, wine-processed, two fen), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, roasted, two qian; one prescription uses two fen).
Decoct in two units of water until reduced to eight-tenths. Strain and take after meals.
This headache is Foot-Taiyin Phlegm-Jue headache, unmanageable without Banxia. Blurred vision and vertigo are caused by internal Wind-deficiency, unresolvable without Tianma. Tianma's sprout is called Dingfengcao (Calming Wind Grass), a divine herb for treating internal Wind. Internal Wind refers to Deficient Wind. Huangqin is sweet and warm, clearing Fire, tonifying Yuan Qi, securing the exterior, stopping spontaneous sweating. Renshen is sweet and warm, regulating the middle, tonifying Qi, clearing Fire. Ershu (Cangzhu and Baizhu) are sweet and warm, removing dampness, tonifying the middle and Qi. Zexie and Fuling promote urination to drain dampness. Chuanpi is bitter and warm, benefiting Qi, regulating the middle, and raising Yang. Fried Shenqu aids digestion and eliminates gastric stagnation. Maiya broadens the middle and assists Stomach Qi. Ganjiang is acrid and hot, washing away middle Cold. Huangbai is bitter and cold, processed with wine. In winter, the Lesser Fire resides in the spring, causing dryness.
Yeguang Liuhong San (Night-Shining Willow-Red Powder): Treats Wind pathogen injuring the eyelids, causing wind-pulled eyelid retraction and excessive tearing.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Jingjisui (Schizonepetae Spica), Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix, roasted), Chuanbaizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Nanxing (Arisomatis Rhizoma, processed), Ruan Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, two liang each), Heshouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix), Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix, peeled and roasted), Shijueming (Haliotidis Concha), Gaoben (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix), Chuanxixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Xionghuang (Realgar), Dangguishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huyang (Lygodii Spora), Subohhe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Mao Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked and stir-fried), Gansong (Nardostachyos Radix et Rhizoma), Huoxiangye (Agastaches Folium), Quanxie (Scorpio, one and a half liang each), Chuan Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, three liang).
Grind into fine powder. Take two or three qian per dose, mixed with tea liquor.

Also treats wet and dry gout, Xiao Zhong (wasting-thirst), Xiao Ke (diabetes), and wind diseases caused by kidney Qi failure. Taking this pill tonifies Liver and Kidney, dispels Wind, brightens eyes, and is miraculous.

Doulin Jiu Method
Half sheng of black beans, winnowed, stir-fried until smoke appears. Soak in three jin of wine. Remove beans. Use this wine to decoct Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), known as Zi Tang.
(Tang Chancellor Li Gong suffered from eye disease while accompanying the emperor in Shu. Symptoms included dryness, opacity formation, pain, seeing bean-sized black flowers, cloud-like wrapping, or flying insect wings. Hundreds of remedies failed. Monk Zhishen said: "Your Excellency's disease is due to Wind-Toxin. When Five Viscera are excess, purge the child; when deficient, tonify the mother. The mother makes the child excess; the child makes the mother deficient. Kidney is the mother of Liver. Now Kidney receives Wind-Toxin, causing Liver deficiency. Liver deficiency causes visual hallucinations. The same applies to other viscera. Gout, wasting-thirst, and wind diseases are all due to Kidney deficiency. Dihuang Wan is the main treatment.")
Chanhua Wubi San (Cicada Flower Peerless Powder): Treats men and women, old and new cases, all Wind-Eye and Qi-Eye attacks, dim vision, wind-granules on eyelids, pain or itching, gradual opacity covering the pupil, unclear vision, long-standing lateral or frontal headache pulling eyes inward, gradually shrinking, red and rotting orbits, pediatric pox entering eyes, white membrane covering pupil, redness, astringency, itching pain.
