The ancients said "Gold Needle" (Jinzhen), implying preciousness. "Jin" is the general term for metals, including copper, iron, gold, and silver. The *Bencao* states: Maghematite (Mati, a type of iron ore) is non-toxic and can be made into needles. Since the Horse corresponds to Wu (noon) and Fire, and Fire conquers Metal, it can resolve the toxicity of iron; thus, Maghematite is used to make needles.
The method of boiling needles is not originally recorded in the *Suwen* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon), but is used in modern times to make the needle warm and lustrous. This method is beneficial and harmless, so it is adopted.
In Wei Shi's medical book, the method uses 1 liang each of Aconite Lateral Root (Aotou) and Croton Seed (Badou), 5 qian each of Sulfur (Huang) and Ephedra Herb (Mahuang), and 10 each of Momordica Seed (Mubiezi) and Chinese Olive (Wumei). The needle is placed in water and boiled for one day in a clay pot (or earthenware jar), then washed and selected. Then, 5 qian each of Myrrh (Moyao), Frankincense (Ruxiang), Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui), and Pyrite (Huaruishi) are added. Boiled again in water for one day as before, it is taken out, washed with soap pod water, and then boiled in dog meat for one day. Finally, it is polished clean with tile dust, ensuring it is straight and true, coated with pine nut oil, and ideally kept close to human warmth for maintenance.

The handle of the Gold Needle is made of Rosewood (Zitan), Red Sandalwood (Huali), or Rhinoceros Horn. It is two cun eight or nine fen long, thick as a bowstring. Eyes are drilled at both ends, three or four fen deep. Coarse wire drawn from high-quality red gold, one cun long, is embedded into the handle's eye using raw lacquer mixed with dry flour. About six fen remains exposed outside, slightly pointed, but not too sharp to avoid damaging the pupil spirit. It is stored in a goose feather tube and kept in a box daily, taken out only when needed.
