Paragraph 1: Coughing blood (hemoptysis) originates from the Lung. It manifests as blood mixed with sputum during coughing.
Qingke Tang (Clear the Lungs Decoction):
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Taoren (Semen Persicae, peeled), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae) (each 1 qian); Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, rhizome removed); Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan Radicis), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae, stir-fried) (each 0.5 qian); Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride, pulp removed); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (0.3 qian); Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis) (0.5 qian).
Crush these ingredients for one dose. Decoct in water and take orally. If tidal fever (fever that worsens at a specific time of day) is present, add Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) and Chi Fuling (Poria cum Rubro). Coughing blood is difficult to treat; the throat cannot tolerate even the slightest irritation. Once bleeding occurs, it seeps into the throat, causing more coughing, which leads to more seepage, and vice versa. Drinking urine results in less than one death per hundred cases; taking cold-natured herbs results in less than one survivor per hundred cases.
Paragraph 2: Regarding vomiting sputum due to coughing, where blood is present in the sputum, the following formula is suitable:
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (1 qian), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (1 qian), Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) (1.5 qian), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae) (1.2 qian), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) (1 qian), Bai Fuling (Poria) (0.8 qian), Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis) (1.5 qian), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis) (0.1 qian), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, heart removed) (1 qian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (0.5 qian).
Crush these ingredients for one dose, decoct in water, and take warm.
Paragraph 3: Formula for treating coughing blood.
Tiandi Wan (Heaven and Earth Pill):
Tianmendong (Radix Asparagi) (1 jin), Huaishengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata from Huaiqing, steamed in a clay pot with wine until black, 0.5 jin).
Grind these into fine powder. Form pills using refined honey, sized like bullet seeds. Take three pills per dose, swallowed with warm wine. Administer three times daily.
Paragraph 4: Coughing blood accompanied by abundant sputum and body heat is mostly due to Blood deficiency. Use Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Gualouren (Semen Benincasae), Hezi (Fructus Terminaliae Chebulae), Haishi (Lapis Aragonitae), and Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae) ground into powder. Form pills using ginger juice and honey, and dissolve slowly in the mouth. If coughing is severe, add Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum). Subsequently, regulate the condition with modified Bawu Tang (Eight Substance Decoction). If sputum is excessive, add phlegm-resolving herbs.
Paragraph 5: Spitting blood (gexue) originates from the Kidney. It manifests as spitting out bloody sputum fragments, or sometimes blood-streaked sputum. The following is suitable:
Qingge Tang (Clear the Kidneys Decoction):
Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, stir-fried with ginger juice), Bai Fuling (Poria), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae, heart removed), Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) (each 1 qian); Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae, stir-fried) (each 0.7 qian); Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, peeled), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, stir-fried), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Liugui (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (each 0.5 qian); Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis) (1.5 qian).
Crush these ingredients. Decoct with fresh ginger and take orally.
Another prescription: Treatment is the same as above.
Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) (1.5 qian), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (1 qian), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (1 qian), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan Radicis) (1.5 qian), Taoren (Semen Persicae, crushed) (1 qian), Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae, stir-fried until black) (0.8 qian), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis) (0.7 qian), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae) (1 qian), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) (0.8 qian), Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride) (0.5 qian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (0.3 qian).
Crush these ingredients for one dose, decoct in water, and take orally. This variant excludes Qingpi and Huangqin but includes Zhimu, Maimendong, and Huangbai.
Paragraph 6: Hematemesis (vomiting blood) and gexue (spitting blood) primarily moisten the Lungs and stop coughing. The following is suitable:
Tianmendong Wan (Asparagus Pill):
Tianmendong (Radix Asparagi, heart removed) (1 liang), Bai Fuling (Poria, peel removed), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, peel and tip removed), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (each 5 qian).
Grind these into fine powder. Form pills using refined honey, sized like seeds of Euryale ferox. Take one pill per dose, hold in the mouth to dissolve slowly before swallowing. Up to ten pills may be taken throughout the day and night.
