Discussion on Suokou (Lockjaw/Closed Mouth). This condition arises from fetal qi carrying heat, with wind pathogens entering the umbilicus and flowing toxic pathogens into the meridians of the Heart and Spleen. Consequently, it causes tongue stiffness, cyanosis of the lips, puckering of the mouth, and an inability to cry.
One should inspect the upper gingiva for small blisters resembling millet grains. Immediately dip boiled cotton cloth in warm water, wrap it around a finger, and gently rub to break the blisters; once the mouth opens, the condition will stabilize.
If severe, use Sanfen (0.3g) of Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), mixed with one Xiexiao (clam shell measure) of Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), and drip into the mouth for immediate recovery.
Discussion on Jinfeng (Stiff Wind). Symptoms include closed eyes, locked jaw, gradually diminishing crying voice, accumulation of flesh-like millet grains on the tongue, inability to suckle milk, foaming at the mouth, and patent but white-colored urination and defecation. These symptoms appearing within one month (120 days) after birth are termed "Fan Feng Jin" (Offending Wind Stiffness). One should urgently examine the infant's palate for spots. First, gently scrape them open with fingernails, then administer Dingming San (Life-Defining Powder). If the jaw remains locked and other medicines fail, take Sheng Nanxing (Arisaema Cum Bile/Raw Rhizoma Arisaematis) peeled and navel removed, ground into an extremely fine powder, mixed with a small amount of Longnao (Borneol). Dip a finger in fresh ginger juice and rub the upper gums; the jaw will open immediately. Generally, although Qifeng (Umbilical Wind), Suokou, and Jinfeng differ in presentation, their pathological principle is identical. It is generally due to internal qi stagnation and obstruction. All cases are suitable for drinking Dan Dou Chi Zhi (Fermented Soybean Juice) to expel fetal toxins. The *Qianjin Fang* states: When infants are first born, their qi and blood are vigorous. If there are minor ailments, purgation is necessary. If not purged, serious diseases will develop, becoming difficult to treat. Zishuang Wan (Purple Frost Pill) may be given in appropriate doses.
Dingming San: Treats newborns with locked jaws unable to open.
Chantui (Periostracum Cicadae) (14 pieces, remove head and feet) Quanxie (Whole Scorpio) (14 pieces, remove toxicity)
Grind the above into fine powder, mix with a small amount of Qingfen (Calomel), blend with breast milk, decoct, and administer orally.
Discussion on Qifeng (Umbilical Wind). This is mostly caused by wind-damp pathogens invading during umbilical cord cutting, or fetal origin having heat-toxins. Upon delivery, the umbilicus appears hard and straight, confirming Qifeng. A green vein must emerge from the umbilicus extending to the abdomen, branching out. If the vein reaches the heart area, death is certain. At the initial emergence of the green vein, urgently dip a rush core (Dengxin Cao) in sesame oil, light it, and cauterize the head of the green vein and the ends of its branches to intercept the pathogen and prevent it from attacking the heart. Additionally, moxa should be applied to Zhongwan (CV12) for three moxa cones. Internally, administer two to three pills of Wan Yi Wan (Ten Thousand Billion Pill) to drain fetal toxins.
One prescription for pediatric Qifeng and Suokou: Use complete raw scallions crushed for juice. Take three Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), grind into powder, mix, and apply to the mother's nipple for the infant to suckle. Alternatively, mix the silkworm powder with milk and灌 (drench/feed); the infant's mouth will open immediately.
One prescription for Qifeng and Suokou: Crush Tianluo (Snail Flesh) thoroughly, add Yifen (0.1g) of Shexiang (Musk), crush again, and apply to the umbilicus for immediate effect.
Jingyan Wutong Gao (Experience Five-Unblocking Ointment): Treats pediatric Qifeng and Suokou.
Sheng Dihuang (Fresh Radix Rehmanniae) Shengjiang (Fresh Rhizoma Zingiberis) Congbai (White Part of Scallion) Luobozhong (Seed Raphani) Tianluorou (Snail Flesh) (Equal parts)
Grind all together until paste-like, apply around the umbilicus with thickness similar to a finger, and hold in place. After one to two hours, if flatus is passed, the patient recovers.
One prescription for Qifeng: Use one Qicao (Larva of Melolontha). Cut off two hairs from its tail so that natural fluid drips out, then drip into the umbilicus; recovery occurs shortly. This insect is found in old wall holes or at the bottom of household water jars.
Secret Recipe for Qifeng and Suokou:
Jiangcan (Powder, Sanfen/0.3g) Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, Liucui/0.06g) Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) Shexiang (Muscus) (Each Yili/0.03g)
First, apply the Jiangcan and Niuhuang powder. Then, dissolve Bingpian and Shexiang using Toad Gall (Chanmudan).
Case of an infant suffering from Suokou Feng, Hebao Feng, E'kou Feng, Qifeng, etc., with white spots growing on the gingival margin known as Mayatya (Horse Teeth), causing pain, crying, and refusal to nurse. Inspect the hard areas inside the mouth or the white spots on the gums. Puncture them with a needle until bleeding occurs. Mix high-quality ink with Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction), apply with a finger, then use the mother's hair dipped in ink to wipe the entire oral cavity. Finally, wipe the mouth with green silk soaked in freshly drawn well water.
