A pulse that is deficient and wiry indicates fright, also known as wind epilepsy.
Epilepsy (Xian Zheng) is characterized by the patient suddenly falling to the ground upon onset, accompanied by mental confusion and loss of consciousness, biting of the tongue with foaming at the mouth, opisthotonos (back arching), upward deviation of the eyes, spasms and convulsions of the hands and feet, or making sounds resembling those of six domestic animals.
Generally, the origin of epilepsy lies in fright. This fright may occur while in the mother's womb or after birth; it must be caused by fright. Fear causes Qi to sink, and fright causes Qi to become chaotic. Fear affects the Kidney, and fright affects the Heart. When the pathogenic Qi gathers in the Heart and Kidney, the Liver and Spleen become relatively deficient. Liver deficiency generates internal Wind, and Spleen deficiency generates Phlegm. When Phlegm accumulates to an extreme and then unblocks, the onset is violent. Thus, Wind and Phlegm surge upward, causing epilepsy to manifest. The *Neijing* states: "The reason people fall to the ground is that Jue Qi (rebellious Qi) gathers in the upper part, creating excess above and deficiency below, with clear and turbid energies reversed." Mental confusion and loss of consciousness occur because turbid pathogens attack the Heart Master, obstructing and closing the Shen (Spirit). The tongue is the sprout of the Heart, and the meridians of the Spleen connect to the root of the tongue; the meridians of the Yangming enter the gaps between the upper and lower teeth. Therefore, when Wind pathogen creates excess in the Heart and chest, the tongue protrudes; when Wind pathogen creates excess in the Yangming channels, the mouth closes tightly. One protruding and one clenching result in biting the tongue and foaming, which indicates excessive Wind-Heat inside. This is like the surging of a tide. Opisthotonos and upward deviation of the eyes indicate Wind in the Taiyang channel. The Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian originates at Jingming (BL1) and descends along both sides of the spine. When invaded by Wind pathogen, the channel becomes full and tense, causing upward deviation of the eyes and back arching. Spasms and convulsions of the hands and feet belong to Wood/Liver. The Liver governs the sinews. When Wind-Heat is excessive in the Liver, the sinews of the whole body are pulled and cramped, causing spasms. "Chu" refers to the flexion of the four limbs, and "Nuo" refers to the opening and closing of the ten fingers. Making animal-like sounds occurs because Wind and Phlegm agitate the Qi orifices, altering the voice. It is like playing a flute: different blockages of the six holes produce different musical notes.
Regarding epilepsy: symptoms include opisthotonos, limb spasms, and foaming at the mouth, commonly called "Pig Pen Wind" in folklore. This is also due to weak Metal and hyperactive Wood generating internal Wind that moves outward, combined with invasive Fright pathogens. Generally, epilepsy occurring several times a month is easy to treat, whereas once-a-year occurrence is difficult to treat, distinguishing excess from deficiency. Excess patterns should be purged; deficiency patterns should first be tonified. The treatment method should initially use Gua Di San (Melon Peduncle Powder) to induce vomiting. Use sweet melon peduncle powder, take one qian per dose, mix with a large cup of well water, and administer. This will cause severe vomiting, followed by deep sleep. Do not startle the patient awake for this to be effective. Afterwards, regulate with herbal decoctions.
Another theory suggests epilepsy is suitable for purgation and emesis. Tea seeds have a strong emetic property and can expel stubborn Phlegm. Take one sheng, crush it, decoct in water, and drink. Stop when severe vomiting occurs.
Another theory addresses various epilepsies where spirit is unsettled, with frequent manic episodes, excessive talking, irritability, and dull complexion.
Ding Shen Zhi Bao Dan (Settle Spirit Supreme Treasure Pill)
Sheng Di Huang (Fried with ginger juice, 5 qian) Ju Hong Chen Pi Bei Mu Bai Fu Ling (Peeled) Huang Lian Yuan Zhi (Heart removed) Shi Chang Pu Suan Zao Ren (Fried) Zhi Shi (Bran-fried) Gua Lou Ren Tian Hua Fen Gan Cao (A little)
Chop these herbs, add three slices of fresh ginger, decoct in water, and take orally.
Another theory posits that epilepsy is caused by congestion of Phlegm and saliva.
Jia Jian Dao Tan Tang (Modified Phlegm-Guiding Decoction) is highly effective.
Nan Xing (Ginger-processed) Ban Xia Chen Pi (White part removed) Bai Fu Ling (Peeled) Gua Lou Ren Zhi Shi (Bran-fried) Jie Geng Shan Zhi Zi Huang Qin (Each 1 qian) Huang Lian (Ginger-fried, 1 qian) Gan Cao Mu Xiang (5 fen, separately ground) Chen Sha (5 fen, ground to powder)
Chop one dose, decoct with ginger, add Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) and Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice), grind Mu Xiang powder into it, mix with Chen Sha powder, and take together.
Another theory states that epilepsy belongs to Qi and Blood deficiency with concurrent Phlegm-Fire. This formula combines attacking and tonifying, soothes the Liver, resolves depression, clears Fire, and transforms Phlegm, eliminating dizziness and other epilepsy symptoms.
Qing Xin Yi Qi Tang (Clear Heart Suppress Qi Decoction)
Dang Gui (Washed with wine) Bai Shao (Stir-fried with wine) Bai Zhu (Rhizome removed, stir-fried) Bai Fu Ling (Peeled) Chen Pi (White part removed) Ban Xia (Ginger-juice fried) Zhi Shi (Bran-fried) Zhu Ru Shi Chang Pu Huang Lian (Ginger-fried) Xiang Fu (Stir-fried, each 1 qian) Mai Men Dong (Heart removed) Chuan Xiong Ren Shen Yuan Zhi (Heart removed) Gan Cao (Each 4 fen)
Chop one dose, decoct with ginger, and take orally.
Another theory covers sudden fainting and falling in adults and children, belonging to the five types of epilepsy.
Zhu Sha (Water-triturated. Use one pig heart, cut open, insert 5 qian of Zhu Sha powder, wrap in wet paper, roast slowly over fire until cooked, remove Zhu Sha. Patient eats the pig heart on an empty stomach.) Nan Xing (Soaked three times in boiling water, chopped, ginger-processed, 2 liang) Ba Dou Ren (5 qian. Stir-fry with one bowl of calcined stone until red, put Ba Dou Ren inside. When ash cools, take out the kernel. Stir-fry again with ash, put kernel back in, stir-fry again, take out. Pounded with grass paper to remove oily ash, do not use the oil/ash.) Quan Xie (Head, feet, tail removed, roasted, 2 qian) Long Dan Cao (2 liang)
Grind into powder, make pills with wheat paste the size of wu zi (cibotium seeds). Take 15 pills per dose, send down with ginger soup.
Another theory addresses wind-epilepsy with spasms, manic mind, discarding clothes and running, climbing high places and singing, persisting for days, climbing walls and roofs, speaking nonsense and cursing regardless of kinship, seeing ghosts and spirits, all tidal fevers, and wind-stroke with jue-ni (cold extremities/rebellion), locked jaw. All can be treated.
San Sheng San (Three Sages Powder)
Fang Feng (Rhizome removed, 3 liang) Gua Di (Roasted, 2 liang) Li Lu (Seedlings removed, dosage adjusted: 1 liang, 0.5 liang, or 2 liang)
Make into coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Decoct in vinegar juice (2 cups) for three boils. Filter into a large bowl. Add another cup of vinegar juice, decoct the dregs for three boils. Pour back into the first decoction, boil together for three more boils. Clarify. Wait until warm, administer slowly. No need to finish the dose. If vomiting occurs, if it does not stop, drink 3-5 sips of scallion white soup to stop it immediately. If no vomiting, administer more. If too much medicine is taken without vomiting phlegm, drink 1-2 cups of vinegar juice salt solution to induce vomiting. If still no effect, probe the throat with a silver hairpin to induce expulsion. A white basin must be used, as black basins obscure the shape of the expelled phlegm. Expelling 2-3 sheng of green-yellow phlegm and foam is effective. After vomiting, eat 1-2 meals of slightly warm white porridge.
This San Sheng San employs sweating, vomiting, and purging methods simultaneously. Fang Feng induces sweating, Gua Di promotes downward drainage, Li Lu induces vomiting. Regarding contraindications: do not use in young children. Even if vomiting is indicated for chronic disease, do not use. Do not use in patients with hematemesis. Do not use if the primary pathology is unclear. Do not use if public opinion is divided/unsettled. First stabilize the patient's spirit, keep them in a clean room, have one or two skilled caregivers attend gently and softly, guiding the patient properly. Beware of dizziness, falls, and shouting after vomiting. Vomiting damages fluids, causing thirst. Provide ice water or fresh water to clear Heart Fire. Avoid hot foods.
Another theory addresses various winds causing twitching, inability to speak, palpitations, forgetfulness,恍惚 (trance-like state), dizziness, chest oppression, Phlegm congestion, mental fatigue, insufficient Heart Qi, unsettled spirit, fright, sorrow, vexation, insomnia, mania, pediatric fright-epilepsy spasms, adult hidden wind/sheep epilepsy, roaring sounds upon onset. Effect is miraculous.

Zhu Sha (2 qian) Zhen Zhu (1 qian) Dan Xing (3 qian) Gan Cao Ma Huang (Roots and nodes removed) Bai Fu Zi (Processed) Xiong Huang Bo He (Each 1 qian) Fang Feng Hu Po Jin Bo Niu Huang (Each 1 qian) Jiang Can (Stir-fried) Xi Jiao Mai Men Dong (Heart removed) Zhi Ke (Pith removed) Jie Geng (Rhizome removed) Di Gu Pi Shen Qu (Stir-fried) Bai Fu Ling (Peeled) Bai Zhu (Rhizome removed) Ren Shen (Each 3 qian) Yuan Zhi (Heart removed, 3 qian) Chai Hu (3 qian) Tian Ma (1 qian) Dan Fan (1.7 qian) Bing Pian (A little) Huang Qin (7 qian) She Xiang (A little) Zi He Che (7 qian) Tian Zhu Huang (1 qian) Jing Jie (7 qian) Chan Tui (1.7 qian) Chuan Xiong Ya Zao (Each 1 qian)
Grind into fine powder, bind with refined honey into pills the size of a bullet, coat with Jin Bo (Gold Leaf), wrap in wax. Open when needed. Take one pill per dose, dissolve and swallow with Bo He (Mint) decoction. Take at any time. Avoid pork, mutton, shrimp, walnuts, and other wind-aggravating foods.
The son of Prince Wang An suffered from epilepsy for seven years with no effect from other doctors. I was summoned to treat him. I administered Zhui Feng Qu Tan Wan (Wind-Chasing Phlegm-Expelling Pill) and An Shen Wan (Calm Spirit Pill) together. After half a year, he recovered.
Four years later, no recurrence occurred. However, due to poor self-care, the disease returned. The servant requested my treatment again. I prepared one batch of this formula, administered it, and it was effective immediately. For several years since, there has been no recurrence, and his constitution has recovered.
