Infants and children may develop chilblains, which often occur on the earlobes or feet. This condition is caused by severe cold qi in winter invading the body, lodging in the skin and muscle layers, and clashing with blood and qi. Initially, it presents with swelling and itching, gradually breaking down to form sores that are difficult to heal quickly. Symptoms typically resolve spontaneously when spring warmth arrives but recur during the cold winter months; hence, it is named "chilblains" (frozen sores).
Huangbai Ointment
Treats chilblains.
Ingredients: Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) powder, Bailian (Ampelopsis Radix) powder, each 1 liang; Baiji (Bletillae Rhizoma) powder, 0.5 liang; fresh sesame seeds, 2 he (crushed to extract juice).
Preparation and Administration: Grind all ingredients into a fine, uniform powder. Take one steamed radish and one cup of good wine, crush them together with the powder until an ointment consistency is achieved. Apply a small amount after first washing the sore with urine from a young boy.
Another prescription: Apply brain marrow from sparrows to the affected area for immediate cure.
Children frequently develop prickly heat (miliaria) in summer. This arises from excessive sweating due to intense heat, causing the couli (skin pores) to open, allowing wind-heat toxic qi to invade the blood and qi. The lesions appear as fine, dense clusters resembling millet grains or mustard seeds, red in color and itchy. They commonly occur on the forehead, chest, and back, and in severe cases, cover the entire body. Colloquially known as "prickly heat," scratching due to itching can also lead to ulceration.
Treatment for prickly heat: Wash the affected area with a decoction of Cuscutae Caulis (Dodder Stem). This method is also effective for head sores and facial sores in women.
For persistent pain from prickly heat: Use 3 liang of dried lotus root node powder and 3 he of raw hemp oil. First, crush the hemp seeds in the oil, then add the lotus root powder and mix well with raw honey. Apply to the affected area three to five times until healed.
Longnao Powder
Treats prickly heat.
Ingredients: Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum), 1 fen (ground); Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) powder; Baifan (Tritici Fructus Imparatus), 2 liang; Lacha (Tea Leaves processed in winter), 1 liang (ground).
Preparation and Administration: Mix thoroughly. Dip new cotton wool into the powder and dust it onto the affected area. For broken sores, apply directly as a dressing until cured.
Another prescription: Finely grind Concha Tridacnitis (Clam Shell Powder), dilute with snow water, and apply before sleep. Application after a hot bath yields better results. If snow water is unavailable, use freshly drawn well water.
Another prescription: Grind Tanxiang (Sandalwood) using snow water, dip a goose feather into the mixture, and sweep/apply it to the affected area.
Occasionally, infants and children develop lacquer dermatitis (qi chuang). This occurs because the individual is intolerant to lacquer, either through visual exposure, contact, or use of new lacquerware. Exposure to lacquer vapors causes toxicity to manifest as redness and swelling, resembling urticaria (wind-weals). Upon rupture, sores form with slight pus discharge and significant pain. Colloquially referred to as "lacquer bite sores."
Huadu San
Treats itching and pain caused by lacquer dermatitis.
Ingredients: Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), 1 liang (chopped); Lanye (Isatidis Folium), 0.5 liang; Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), 0.5 liang (heart removed); Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), 1 fen; Mayaxiao (Natrii Sulfas), 1 fen; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), 1 fen (stir-fried until slightly reddish, chopped).
Preparation and Administration: Prepare as a coarse powder. Take 1 qian per dose, add 1 small cup of water, boil down to half a cup, strain, and take warm.
Chui Liu Gao
Treats the above conditions.
Ingredients: Chui Liu Zhi (Salix Purpurea Twig), 5 liang; Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix), 2 liang; Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), 1 liang.
Preparation and Administration: Chop the herbs. Take three spoons of the material, add two bowls of water, boil down to one bowl, and strain. Add half a spoon of high-quality ink juice, stir well, and simmer into an ointment. Store in a porcelain container. Once cooled, apply a small amount to the sores.
Another prescription: Apply raw high-quality hemp oil directly to the affected area. Additionally, chop Huanglushu (Ardisiae Japonicae Radix), boil to make a concentrated decoction, let it cool, and wash the area with it.
