Infants suffering from "moon-eroding sores" (Yueshi Chuang) may develop lesions on the ears and nose or on the fingers, with their onset and resolution corresponding to the waxing and waning of the moon. It is said in common parlance that when the new moon first appears, if a child points at it with their finger, such sores arise; hence the name.
For treating moon-eroding sores appearing beside the ear: Grind Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) into powder and apply externally.
For treating moon-eroding sores on the fingers, whether swollen or ulcerated, varying with the lunar cycle: Take one bunch of fresh Xiebai (Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus), boil it in Kujiu (Vinegar) for several boils until cooked, remove it, and apply externally.
For treating moon-eroding sores anywhere on the body: On the night of the full moon (Fifteenth day), take Rabbit Excrement (Tuzi Shi), place it inside the abdomen of a Toad (Xiaha), burn them together, grind into fine powder, and apply externally.
Another prescription: Treat as above. On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, take a Toad (Xiaha), burn it to ash, grind into fine powder, mix with Pig Fat (Zhugao), and apply externally.
Another prescription: Treat as above. Take Snake Slough (Shetui), burn to ash, grind into powder, mix with Pig Lard (Zhizhi), and apply externally.
Another prescription: Treat as above. This formula also treats "moon erosion" where sores appear in all nine orifices. Burn Earthworm Excrement (Qiuyin Fen), grind into powder, mix with Pig Lard (Zhizhi), and apply externally.
For treating moon-eroding sores on both ears with continuous discharge of pus and fluid:
Shuiyin (Mercurius), Hufen (Cerussa/Lead Carbonate) (each 1 liang; add 2-3 qian of Shuiyin [Mercury] and grind until the mercury stars disappear); Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (remove roots, grind to powder, 2 liang); Songzhi (Pini Resina) (1 liang, grind to powder).
Grind all ingredients uniformly and finely. Sprinkle the powder onto the sore. If the area is dry, use refined Pig Fat (Zhugao) to make an ointment for application. Prior to this, wash the sore thoroughly with salt water, dry it, and then apply the medicine. Another method uses only Hufen (Cerussa) mixed with soil for external application.
Another prescription: For treating moon-eroding sores behind the ear. Burn 1 liang of Baigu Pi (Dried Drum Skin) to ash, burn one Toad (Xiaha) to ash, grind them together into powder, and apply using refined Pig Fat (Zhugao) as an ointment.
Infants developing Qu Su Chuang (Qu Su Sores) do so due to residing near house walls where there exists an insect named Qu Su (Earwig). Its body is about one cun long, with many thin and slender legs. When it crawls, if it encounters a human shadow, it urinates upon it. Wherever its urine lands on the human body, sores correspondingly arise. These typically occur around the waist. Initially, small red sores appear, resembling millet, broomcorn millet, or hemp seeds. If left untreated, they persist, eventually producing pus and forming ulcers. The condition is named after the insect. In northern regions, this is commonly called Jinyin Chuang (Spreading Eczema/Ulcer). It is uncertain if this identification is correct; therefore, both accounts are preserved here.
For treating sores caused by Qu Su (Earwig) urine: Take earth from a Swallow's Nest (Huyan Chao Zhong Tu), mix with water, and apply externally. Alternatively, mix with Pig Fat (Zhugao) and Vinegar (Kujiu) for application.
Another prescription: Apply Bai Biandou Ye (Folium Dolichoris Lablabis) externally; this is considered optimal.
Another prescription: For treating Qu Su (Earwig) sores. If the sores encircle the entire body, death ensues; some say if they encircle the waist and abdomen, death ensues. Take Jili Ye (Folium Tribuli) and mash for external application. If leaves are unavailable, use the seed.
