The face appears cyanotic and the lips pale, indicating that the Stomach was previously startled. Vomiting yellow phlegm suggests a mixture of cold and heat. Dry retching due to stagnation of milk and food in the intestines and stomach can be resolved by harmonizing the Spleen and Stomach, allowing the infant to regain alertness and vitality promptly.
Vomiting with both matter and sound is termed "Ou" (Vomiting); dry retching without matter is called "Gan Ou" (Dry Retching). Vomiting with matter but no sound is termed "Tu" (Regurgitation/Emetic discharge); vomiting accompanied by phlegm is referred to as "Ou"; silent expulsion of contents is called "Tu". "Ou Tu" refers to the expulsion of gastric contents. This results from disharmony of Stomach Qi and dysfunction of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Normally, Stomach Qi descends smoothly; when it rebels upward, vomiting occurs. Etiologies vary between Cold-Stomach and Heat-Stomach patterns, as well as Food-Intoxication and Stomach-Deficiency patterns. Since pathologies differ, treatments must vary. For all types of vomiting, if appetite is lost, breastfeeding should be regulated. Regardless of cold or heat, prolonged vomiting leads to Stomach Deficiency generating Wind, which may evolve into Slow Convulsion (Man Jing Feng); thus, prevention is crucial. If Slow Spleen Wind has already developed, and frequent vomiting of foul-smelling fluid occurs, this indicates the impending exhaustion of Stomach Qi.
Heat-Vomiting: In summer, infants playing in the sun may have latent heat accumulating in the Stomach. Alternatively, if the nursing mother contracts summerheat and nurses the infant while carrying heat, or if excessive spicy and hot foods are consumed, Heat-Vomiting often results. Symptoms include a red face and red lips, five-center heat (heat sensation in the palms, soles, and chest), fewer episodes but larger volume per episode, and undigested milk curds appearing yellow.
Treatment Method: Push San Guan (Three Gates), Tonify Spleen and Stomach Meridians and Lung Meridian, Pinch Shi Wang Acupoints, Dig Right Duan Zheng Point, Move Water into Earth, Push Eight Trigrams, Divide Yin and Yang, Red Phoenix Shakes Head technique, Rub Zong Jing Point, Clear Liu Fu (Six Limbs), Rub Elbow point.
Cold-Vomiting: In winter, contracting wind-cold, or if the nursing mother catches cold and nurses the infant carrying cold, causing cold qi to enter the abdomen; or consuming raw/cold foods, or damaging residual milk, leading to Stomach Deficiency failing to accept food. Milk curds do not digest, preference for warmth and aversion to cold, cold limbs, deep and faint pulse, frequent episodes but small volume per episode characterize Cold-Vomiting.
Treatment Method: Push San Guan (Three Gates), Tonify Spleen and Stomach Meridians and Lung Meridian, Dig Right Duan Zheng Point, Push Eight Trigrams, Divide Yin and Yang, Yellow Bee Enters Cave technique, Red Phoenix Shakes Head technique, Push San Guan (80 times), Clear Liu Fu (6 Limbs) (24 times), Rub Elbow point.
Food-Intoxication Vomiting: Vomit contains undigested food, smells sour and foul, aversion to eating, stomach pain, and tidal fever characterize this pattern.
Treatment Method: Push San Guan (Three Gates), Pinch Five Finger Tips, Dig Right Duan Zheng Point, Push Pi Tu (Spleen Earth), Push Eight Trigrams, Divide Yin and Yang, Scoop Bright Moon technique, Horse Passes Over Heavenly River technique, Clear Liu Fu (6 Limbs), Rub Elbow point.
Deficiency Vomiting: Weakness of Stomach Qi fails to retain milk and food, resulting in vomiting.
Treatment Method: Push San Guan (Three Gates), Tonify Wu Jing (Five Meridians), heavily Tonify Spleen and Stomach Meridians, Pinch Right Duan Zheng Point, Move Earth into Water, Push Eight Trigrams, Divide Yin and Yang, Red Phoenix Shakes Head technique, Push San Guan (Three Gates) (24 times), Clear Liu Fu (6 Limbs), Tonify Large Intestine Meridian, Rub Elbow point.
