Ancient and modern physicians discuss edema, mostly attributing it to Spleen deficiency (Spleen deficiency). Generally, it arises from damp-heat (damp-heat). The ten root causes require distinct treatments; detailed differentiation of tonification and purging depends on clinical flexibility.
Ancient formulas contain discussions on "ten types" of symptoms. However, a floating pulse indicates wind deficiency, while a deep and hidden pulse indicates water disease. A deep pulse suggests deficient meridians, and a hidden pulse indicates difficulty in urination, which constitutes proper water retention (Zheng Shui). If the Spleen pulse appears deficient and large, it often manifests as Spleen swelling. If neglected and untreated, this leads to edema. Since the Spleen belongs to Earth, it prefers dryness and dislikes dampness. When Earth fails to control Water, fluid accumulation stagnates and remains stagnant in the skin, causing edema. At the onset of the disease, the eyelids typically swell suddenly in the morning and subside slightly by afternoon. This condition is relatively easy to treat in summer and autumn/winter, but difficult in spring. This is because among the waters of the four seasons, none are as overflowing as spring water; additionally, Liver Wood is vigorous in spring and overacts upon Spleen Earth, preventing the Spleen from controlling Water, thus making it hard to cure. The progression and regression are irregular, requiring gradual regulation to achieve efficacy. Generally, for pediatric edema, dispersing methods are used first, followed by draining methods.
Treatment: Push San Guan (Three Passes) (100 times), Push Pi Tu (Spleen Earth) (100 times), Huang Feng Ru Dong (Yellow Bee Enters the Cave) (10 presses), Yun Wu Jing (Rotate Five Meridians) (50 times), Er Shen Men (Two Gate Doors) (20 times), Tao Wei Ling (Dig Wei Ling) (20 times), Tian Men Ru Hu Kou (Heaven's Door into Tiger's Mouth) (20 times), Zhou (Elbow) (20 times). These are purging methods. After purging, use tonifying methods: Push Pi Tu (Spleen Earth) (100 times), Fen Yin Yang (Divide Yin and Yang) (100 times), Bu Shen (Tonify Kidney) (100 times), Yun Tu Ru Shui (Rotate Earth into Water) (40 times), Tian Men Ru Hu Kou (Heaven's Door into Tiger's Mouth), Zhou (Elbow) (20 times each).
In spring and summer, use water-mixed medicinal oil for pushing; in autumn and winter, use ginger, scallion, and true sesame oil for pushing. Then, take one cup of wine, a little refined salt, one piece of Gleditsia sinensis (Zao Jiao) powder, and one zhong of yellow soil, stir-fry them together, wrap in cloth, and invert onto the palm. Dig/rub the thumb joint, and the swelling will dissipate.
Pediatric sudden redness of both eyes is due to Liver heat combined with wind. Dispersing wind and clearing fire is the optimal approach. Post-variolic eye conditions require separate aggressive treatment.
Treatment for Fire Eye (Huoyan): Tonify Kidney (500 times), Push Tian He Shui (River Water) (500 times), Liu Fu (Six Palaces) (500 times), Fen Yin Yang (Divide Yin and Yang) (300 times), Yun Ba Gua (Rotate Eight Trigrams) (200 times), Push Pi Tu (Spleen Earth) (100 times), Shui Li Lao Ming Yue (Fishing the Bright Moon from Water) (100 times), Hegu (LI4), Quchi (LI11), Jianjing (GB21) (each one segment/cut).
Treatment for Wind Eye (Fengyan): Push San Guan (Three Passes) (300 times), Rou Shen (Knead Kidney) (300 times), Tao Wu Zhi Jie (Dig Five Finger Joints) (100 times), Fen Yin Yang (Divide Yin and Yang) (300 times), Ba Gua (Eight Trigrams) (100 times), Push Tian He Shui (River Water) (200 times), Liu Fu (Six Palaces) (100 times), Shui Li Lao Ming Yue (Fishing the Bright Moon from Water) (100 times), Hegu (LI4), Quchi (LI11), Jianjing (GB21) (each one segment/cut).
