The treatments recorded in Volume Seven of *Xiaopin Fang* are as follows:
Various prescriptions for treating women's diseases.
Prescriptions for treating female infertility (to be verified).
Prescriptions for treating pregnancy and childbirth.
Prescriptions for treating postpartum conditions.
Prescriptions for treating elderly women with various metrorrhagia, blood stasis, and chronic diseases.
These constitute five categories in total.
In ancient times, women's diseases were easier to treat because they married late, allowing their Kidney Qi (the essence of the Kidneys governing reproduction and development) to become established; thus, they fell ill less often and suffered less physical damage. Nowadays, women marry early, giving birth before their Kidney roots are solidified, thereby damaging the Kidneys. Consequently, young women in contemporary society who suffer from diseases are difficult to treat. Early marriage and early pregnancy may shorten lifespan even if no disease is initially present.
Abnormal menstrual blood in women.
The "Thirty-Six Diseases" mentioned in various medical texts refer to Twelve Syndromes, Nine Pains, Seven Harms, Five Injuries, and Three Chronic Obstructions. What are the Twelve Syndromes? They refer to twelve types of vaginal discharge: First, resembling paste; Second, like dark blood; Third, like purple fluid; Fourth, like red flesh; Fifth, like pus scabs; Sixth, like bean curd dregs; Seventh, like mallow soup; Eighth, like coagulated blood; Ninth, like clear blood, thin as water; Tenth, like rice washings; Eleventh, like menstruation coming irregularly, sometimes early, sometimes late; Twelfth, menstruation not arriving on schedule. What are the Nine Pains? First, pain and injury in the vagina; Second, dripping pain in the vagina; Third, pain during urination; Fourth, pain caused by cold; Fifth, abdominal pain upon onset of menstruation; Sixth, distending pain due to Qi stagnation; Seventh, discharge from the vagina accompanied by pain as if bitten by insects; Eighth, pain in the hypochondriac region; Ninth, pain in the lower back and hips. What are the Seven Harms? First, pain in the anterior and posterior orifices with difficulty in urination and defecation; Second, alternating cold and heat pain; Third, urgent and hard pain in the lower abdomen; Fourth, numbness of the Zang organs; Fifth, malposition of the Zi Men (cervical os), pulling into back pain; Sixth, fluctuating volume of menstruation; Seventh, inducing vomiting. What are the Five Injuries? First, distending and painful fullness in both hypochondria; Second, heart pain radiating to the hypochondria; Third, Qi knotting and obstruction; Fourth, pathological thoughts leading to scanty and painful urination; Fifth, chronic coldness in the anterior and posterior orifices. What are the Three Chronic Conditions? First, emaciation with failure to generate muscle tissue; Second, sterility and inability to lactate; Third, amenorrhea (closure of menstrual flow). Bai'e Wan (White Kaolin Pill) treats the Thirty-Six Diseases in women, providing specific formulas according to the varying nature of each condition.
Bai'e (Kaolinite) [3 fen], Longgu (Fossilized Bones) [3 fen], Shaoyao (Peony Root) [2 fen], Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) [3 fen], Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix) [2 fen], Fuling (Poria) [3 fen], Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) [2 fen], Qumai (Dianthus Herba) [2 fen], Bailian (Trollius Chinensis Bulb) [2 fen], Shiwei (Pyrosia Folium) [2 fen], Gancao (Licorice Root) [2 fen], Muli (Oyster Shell) [2 fen], Xixin (Asarum Root) [2 fen], Fuzi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Preparata) [2 fen], Yuyuliang (Haematitum) [2 fen], Baishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum) [2 fen], Renshen (Ginseng Radix) [2 fen], Wubeigu (Sepia Ecrius) [2 fen], Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Bark) [4 fen], Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Radix) [4 fen], Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) [2 fen].
The above twenty-one ingredients are ground and sifted, then made into pills the size of wu zi (Chinese parasol tree seeds) using honey. Take ten pills before meals, twice daily. If the effect is insufficient, gradually increase the dose. Symptoms will improve after twenty days of medication, and all diseases will be cured after thirty days.
