治疗冬季感受寒邪所致疾病的各方;
治疗春夏季温热病的各方;

Book: Xiaopin Fang (Minor Formulas)
Chapter: Volume 6 / Various Formulas for Treating Winter Cold Damage
Category: Formula
[Translation]
The contents treated in Volume 6 of the Essential Formulas are as follows:
Various formulas for treating cold damage in winter;
Various formulas for treating warm-heat diseases in spring and summer;
Various formulas for treating cold invasion (malaria) in autumn.
These three categories above.
Discussion states: From ancient times to the present, it has been passed down that cold damage is a difficult disease to treat, while epidemic febrile diseases caused by heaven's movement are due to toxic qi. However, those discussing treatment do not distinguish between cold damage and epidemic febrile diseases as different pathogenic factors. Some say "cold damage" is the term used by scholars, while "epidemic febrile disease" is the colloquialism among farmers, without explaining the similarities and differences of the diseases. Examining various classics, there are indeed differences. The appropriate treatments differ, and the explanations of formulas should be distinguished; therefore, I briefly outline the essentials.
The *Yin Yang Da Lun* (Great Treatise on Yin and Yang) states: Spring climate is mild, summer climate is hot and humid, autumn climate is cool, and winter climate is icy cold; this is the order of the normal qi of the four seasons. In winter, severe cold causes all things to hide deeply. If gentlemen live carefully and prudently, they will not be injured by cold. Those who expose themselves to it are said to have contracted cold damage. Injury by the qi of the four seasons can all cause illness. Among them, cold damage is considered most toxic because it forms the most killing and pestilential qi. Those who contract it and fall ill immediately are called "cold damage"; those who do not fall ill immediately harbor the cold toxin in their skin and muscles. By spring, it transforms into warm disease; by summer, it transforms into heat disease. Heat disease is more severe than warm disease. Therefore, hardworking people often suffer from warm-heat diseases in spring and summer, which are caused by exposure to cold in winter, not by the qi of the time. Whenever there is an epidemic, it refers to situations where spring should be warm but is instead very cold, summer should be hot but is instead very cold, autumn should be cool but is instead very hot, and winter should be cold but is instead very warm. This is having the qi of one season in another season. Thus, throughout the year, the illnesses of young and old are often similar; this is the qi of the time (epidemic qi).
Wang Shuhe said: The disease of cold damage progresses daily from superficial to deep, requiring different formulas for treatment. Nowadays, when people get cold damage, some do not treat it early, some receive incorrect treatment, or they delay until they are exhausted before consulting a doctor. Doctors, not knowing the sequence of treatment, fail to cure the disease. They only adjust formulas temporarily based on circumstances, yet achieve efficacy. Now, I have collected Zhang Zhongjing's old theories, recorded his symptoms, pulse diagnosis, observation of complexion and voice, and true formulas effective against specific diseases, intending to prepare for emergencies in the world. Furthermore, land varies in elevation, leading to different cold and warmth; material natures vary in rigidity and flexibility, and dietary habits also differ. Thus, Huangdi raised questions about the four directions, and Qibo proposed the abilities of four treatments to instruct later generations, opening up what was previously ununderstood. Practitioners facing diseases must examine both aspects.
Chen Linqiu said: Someone asked: If after taking decoctions continuously to induce sweating, no sweat comes out, what should be done? I replied: Medical classics state: Continuous sweating with no sweat coming out leads to death. I thought of using steaming methods, similar to the method for steaming wind-stroke. Using moist heat from outside to counteract the pathogen inevitably induces sweating. Later, I asked Zhang Miao about this. Zhang Miao said: Once, someone became extremely fatigued from work, sweated, lay on a bamboo mat, and fell ill due to cold. He suffered only from aversion to cold and curling up. Various doctors gave pills, powders, and decoctions, inducing sweating eight times within four days, but no sweat came out. Zhang Miao ordered the floor to be heated and peach leaves spread for steaming. Immediately, profuse sweating occurred. Powder was applied to the body under the blanket to keep it dry, after which he rose and recovered. Subsequently, using this method repeatedly always induced sweating. Human constitutions naturally vary in the ability to sweat; it is not just the disease that causes difficulty, but steaming invariably induces sweating.
