The following are treated in Volume 8 of Yao Fang:
Decoctions for various diseases in children
Pills and powders for various diseases in children
Plasters, baths, ointments, powders, and acupuncture methods for various diseases in children
These three categories
A person aged six and above is called "Xiao" (small/young child), sixteen and above is "Shao" (adolescent), thirty and above is "Zhuang" (adult/strong), and fifty and above is "Lao" (old). Diseases in infants under six are not recorded in medical texts; thus, illnesses in nursing infants are difficult to treat because there are no established precedents. In the middle ancient period, a man named Wu Fang compiled the *Cranial Fontanelle Classic* for children, used to predict lifespan and judge disease prognosis. This was passed down through generations, marking the beginning of pediatric prescriptions.
When an infant is born, use a finger to clear the bad blood from the mouth. After bathing and cutting the umbilical cord, and before wrapping the swaddling clothes and administering vermilion honey, take a piece of Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) about the size of the middle finger joint. Crush it, decoct in two he of water until one he remains. Wrap cotton around the liquid and let the infant suck it, similar to the method for vermilion honey. Continue sucking until about one xian shell amount enters the stomach. The infant should vomit vigorously, expelling bad fluid from the chest. After vomiting, wait until the infant feels hungry or thirsty, then offer again. If the previous dose or subsequent doses do not cause vomiting, just give small amounts until the entire he is consumed. Vomiting the bad fluid ensures the infant's mind and spirit remain healthy. If no vomiting occurs, it means the infant did not swallow bad blood; do not administer further.
On the third day after birth, administer the Vermilion Honey formula to stabilize the infant's spirit and soul.
Refined and ground Zhen Zhu (Margarita), amount like a soybean, mix with one xian shell of Chi Mi (Red Honey). Wrap cotton around it and let the infant suck. Stop after three sips. Give this amount over three days (totaling three soybeans). Do not give too much, as it may cause cold spleen and stomach and abdominal distension.
After Vermilion Honey, administer Niu Huang (Calculus Bovis). Niu Huang benefits the liver and gallbladder, clears heat, calms fright, and wards off evil qi. Prepare as with Vermilion Honey, using the same dosage.
For newborns with white spots like rice grains on the tongue and mouth, known as Goose Mouth (E Kou), including outside the nose. This is caused by the mother craving sticky rice during pregnancy. If not removed immediately, swallowing it may turn into worms. Remove it promptly. Treatment:
Wrap a hairpin tip with hair, dip in well water, and wipe the area. Do this for three to four mornings until it falls off. If it persists, boil Li Ji (Tribulus terrestris) juice to make it thick and wipe as above. In spring and winter without Li Ji, boil Li Tree Bark instead. All are effective. Another method: Place the debris from the hairpin tip in Tusu Water, ensuring the infant does not swallow it.
If an infant swallows a membrane resembling the septum of a pomegranate seed, attached to the underside of the tongue, it is called Tongue-Tie (Lian She). If not cut initially, it may hinder speech and tongue movement later. Treatment:
Pinch and cut it with fingernails. Slight bleeding is harmless. If bleeding does not stop, apply burned hair powder to stop the bleeding.
Breast milk is derived from the mother's blood and qi. Emotions affect blood and qi. Nursing mothers should guard against extreme joy and anger.
Regarding suitable characteristics for nursing mothers, there are many signs, but here we list only contraindications. Mothers with body odor, goiter, thyroid swelling, foul smell, facial paralysis, scabies, tinea versicolor, alopecia areata, leprosy ulcers, cleft lip, deafness, nasal congestion, epilepsy, or dizziness should not nurse. If free of these, they may nurse. Observing old moxibustion marks on the skin indicates...

Case of infant swallowing an iron bead the size of a civet bean. No harm for a year, but later became emaciated, failed to gain flesh, suffered diarrhea, and alternating chills and fever. Self-medication worsened the condition. A physician diagnosed undigested foreign body. Investigation revealed the child had lost one of sixteen iron beads played with recently. The physician confirmed the diagnosis and prescribed decoction. The illness resolved, and the child regained health. The prescription was forgotten but recorded here.
Another case: A girl of six or seven suffered abdominal pain. Her mother felt a horizontal object in the flesh during massage. Upon inquiry, the child denied a needle. Inspection showed intact skin. Pressing caused no pain from a needle, only abdominal pain. The mother pinched the area hard, breaking the object into two pieces under her nail, without lateral pain. A physician suspected swallowed needle. History suggested the mother carried needles while holding the naked infant, causing a needle to enter the skin. The infant cried but stopped when fed and rested, leading to insensitivity. Years later, abdominal pain revealed it. Iron rusts in moist environments; inside flesh for years, blood and qi corrode the needle, making it brittle enough to break when pinched. Treating the abdominal pain with a Warming Middle Decoction cured the discomfort. The girl married later and had no issues during childbirth regarding the needle site. Recorded for reference.
