Swelling and redness begin at the upper gum roots beneath the tongue, with pain in the oral cavity feeling as if scalded by heat. The gum roots gradually ulcerate, eventually leading to tooth loss as a complication. (See "Tongue Symptoms" for formulas.)
The tongue is red and swollen, indicating excessive fire in the Heart Meridian. The di jiao (lateral sides of the sublingual frenulum) are also red and swollen; the tongue has yellow coating, and there is swelling and pain on the tongue surface due to yellowish deposits, which also belongs to Heart Fire. (See "Tongue Symptoms" for formulas.)
The tongue is swollen and large, resembling a cooked pig liver, unable to move freely, caused by melancholy. Another type grows under the root of the tongue, resembling a white date, with cyan-purple veins, and is difficult to heal quickly. Initially, it is painless and without chills or fever, but gradually swells. It is easy to cure if treated early, but difficult to recover from if delayed, also caused by melancholy; this is known as Chong She (Double Tongue). (See "Tongue Symptoms" for formulas.)
This belongs to excessive fire in the Heart Meridian, arising from Qi stagnation. It grows on the tongue, sometimes resembling wood ear fungus or mushrooms, with a red-purple color. (See "Tongue Symptoms" for formulas.)
Purple blisters appear on the palate inside the mouth, about the size of a bean. Zi She Zhang (Purple Swollen Tongue) belongs to Heart Fire, accompanied internally by restlessness and confusion.
Generalized erosion and ulceration of the mouth are treated with the same method as Xiao Er Kou Gan (Pediatric Oral Herpes/Stomatitis).
Also known as Xue Kou (Snow Mouth). In infants within one month of birth, the entire mouth and tongue are covered with white debris resembling goose mouth, hence the name.
(Refers to Ban Ya [Gingival Blisters], requiring daily puncture with a needle to break the blisters.)
Newborns who have received heat-toxin in the womb develop this condition upon exposure to wind. Diagnosis is made by observing white, brittle-bone-like substances on the gum roots. When this condition is about to erupt, the infant sneezes immediately after birth, sucks, swallows, or spits out milk without proper nursing, indicating deep pathology. If not treated urgently, the pathogen entering the abdomen will cause death. Do not mistake it for Jaundice; careful examination must be conducted immediately after birth. Daily puncture is required; if neglected until the third or fourth day, the disease worsens, and by the fifth or sixth day, it becomes hard and difficult to treat. Recurrence is possible, and generally, one can avoid this complication only after about a month.
Redness and swelling on the chest, manifesting externally but potentially attacking inward, may lead to severe throat swelling, obstruction, and suppuration. It resembles Mian Yong (Facial Carbuncle), but the aforementioned symptoms belong to the Kidney.
Growing below the cheeks, caused by rich and strong flavors in diet and excessive consumption of pure wine, leading to heat-toxin accumulation.
Small blisters arise from under the tongue, starting with one, then another, and even more, growing continuously like a string of pearls.
