According to the *Yangsheng Fang* (Prescriptions for Nourishing Life): The three months of winter are called "closing the viscera" (bi zang, closing the internal organs). At this time, water freezes and the ground cracks; one should not disturb the Yang qi. Go to bed early and rise late, waiting until sunlight appears before getting up. Let your will be like something hidden or concealed, as if harboring a secret intention, or as if having gained something. Seek warmth and avoid cold; do not allow the skin pores to open and sweat, causing Qi to be frequently depleted. This is how to respond to the Qi of winter and the way to nourish the Kidneys. Violating this will injure the Kidneys, leading to flaccidity and Jue syndrome (limb coldness/numbness) in spring.
According to the *Yangsheng Fang Daoyin Fa* (Guiding and Pulling Methods of the Prescriptions for Nourishing Life): For those suffering from Kidney disease, symptoms include throat obstruction, abdominal fullness, and deafness. These can be treated by exhaling Qi.
It also states: Sit with both feet crossed. Grasp the Jie Xi (ST41, Solving Stream) acupoint on both feet with both hands, pull them back to the extreme limit. Tilt the head backward and move it forward and backward seven times. This removes the stagnation and obstruction of Kidney Qi.
According to the *Yangsheng Fang Daoyin Fa*: Squat and tilt the body. Extend both hands forward forcefully, palms facing up. Turn the waist left and right seven times to the extreme limit. This removes cold blood and Wind pathogen from the Bladder, relieving stiffness and rigidity of the bone joints.
It also states: Assume a kneeling position (mutual kneeling) for harmonization. Direct the Heart Qi downward to the feet. Mentally visualize the Qi flowing smoothly and distributing appropriately. Then slowly rise and extend the hands alongside the ribs. Imagine Qi continuously exiting through the palms. If the face feels tight or stifled, stop immediately. Perform this two sets of seven times (fourteen times total). This alleviates coldness in the knees, treats chronic Bladder diseases causing stiffness of the lower back and spine, and relieves coldness and stifling sensation below the umbilicus.
According to the *Yangsheng Fang Daoyin Fa*: To treat pain in the thighs, shins, and arms: Bend one leg. For the painful area in the arm, lie flat on your back. Close the mouth and nose to hold the breath. If there is abdominal pain, use intention to push the Qi, visualizing it reaching the painful area. When heat is felt above and below, the condition will heal.
It also states: Lie flat on your back, extend both legs, and place both hands with palms up, toes pointed upward. Inhale through the nose to the extreme limit for seven breaths. This eliminates string-tight, urgent, and cutting pain in the abdomen.
It also states: Lie flat on your back. Inhale through the mouth and exhale through the nose to relieve tenesmus (feeling of incomplete defecation). Swallow air dozens of times to warm the Middle Jiao cold, treating dry heaving, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Inhale through the mouth seventy times while vigorously vibrating the abdomen. Swallow air dozens of times. Rub both hands together until hot, then massage the abdomen to direct the Qi downward.
It also states: Lie flat on your back with soles of feet and palms facing up. Inhale through the nose for seven breaths. This eliminates string-tight and cutting pain in the abdomen.
According to the *Yangsheng Fang Daoyin Fa*: Squat, calm the mind, and curl both hands. Direct the Heart Qi downward. Shake the arms left and right, tilting the body as far as possible, engaging the shoulder muscles. Curl the head and strike the belly. Direct both hands' Qi toward the Mai Men (Conception Vessel) down to below the umbilicus. Perform this three sets of seven times (twenty-one times). Gradually relieve abdominal distension, urgency, and stifling caused by indigestion.
It also states: For severe abdominal distension due to cold, exhale through the mouth more than thirty times until finished.
It also states: If the abdomen is full and one suffers from feeling overly full after eating and drinking, sit upright and arch the waist. Inhale through the mouth dozens of times, then exhale fully. Stop when relief is achieved; if not relieved, continue. If there is cold pathogen causing abdominal discomfort, apply this method as well.
It also states: Sit upright and arch the waist. Inhale through the mouth dozens of times. This relieves abdominal fullness, discomfort from overeating/drinking, and abdominal pain caused by Cold-Heat pathogens.
It also states: Extend both hands to the sides of the body, leaning to one side to the extreme limit. Visualize Qi from the crown and soles scattering downward, dissolving like rotting matter. Straighten and extend the fingers of the palms. Do this equally on both sides, performing three sets of seven times (twenty-one times). Then straighten the body and rotate the shoulders and waist forward and backward seven times. This relieves abdominal distension and treats palpitations caused by cold, stiff meridians, and rigid tendons in the Bladder, lower back, spine, and arms.
It also states: If the interior is full and one feels easily satiated after eating, sit upright and arch the waist. Inhale through the mouth dozens of times. Stop when relief is achieved; if not, continue.
It also states: The Spleen governs Earth and is warm like human flesh, similar to the state after sweating. It expels Wind-Cold pathogens. If there is Qi distension in the abdomen, first warm the feet and massage up and down. Massage the Qi Hai (CV6, Sea of Qi) acupoint without limiting the number of repetitions; more is better. Then stand and rotate left and right seven times to harmonize the Qi. If applied internally to the waist and body, practicing these thirteen methods daily involves rotating three hundred and sixty degrees. This shakes the bone joints, arteries, and tendons, allowing Qi and Blood to distribute and moisten. The twenty-four Qi become harmonious and moist, and the Zang-Fu organs are evenly balanced. Use head shaking and vibration, directing Hand Qi upward and Heart Qi downward. Clearly perceive the coming and going of Qi. Do not neglect keeping hands level or tilting the waist to turn. Massage the Qi, contracting and returning until complete. Scatter the Heart Qi and send it to the Yong Quan (KI1, Gushing Spring) acupoint. Do not lose track of the movement of Qi in any detail. Using these methods is beneficial. If one does not understand how to use them, one might worry about chaotic Qi.
