*Waitai Mi Yao* cites *Duan Ju*, which records in *Yuan Zhong Ji*: There is a female bird under heaven, known as "Guhuo" or "Diaoxing Gui". It likes to fly and cry over villages on rainy nights. If called, it will come. This bird is purely female without males, does not lay eggs, and likes to drop its feathers in the courtyard. If placed in a baby's clothes, it causes the infant to suffer from epilepsy (Xian Bing), leading inevitably to death, after which it transforms into the form of an infant. Therefore, clothing for infants up to ten years old should not be exposed outdoors, especially in the seventh and eighth lunar months.
Zhang Huan discusses that pediatric epilepsy is the most malignant disease. Since ancient times, it was said that there are only three types of epilepsy. By the Jin and Tang dynasties, immortals, famous doctors, and others studied treatments for all kinds of epilepsy. *Hui Yan Guan Zheng* states that the symptoms of epilepsy generally fall into several categories, all caused by accumulated fright (Ji Jing) manifesting later, with pathogenic qi transmitting to the Heart. During each attack, fingers curl as if counting objects, followed by staring eyes for a long time, chewing saliva in the mouth, stiffness of the waist and back, sudden unconsciousness, and recovery after a while. Attacks may occur three to five times a day. The signs include cold extremities. If physicians treat it merely as wind-stroke due to fright, cure will be difficult. This disease originates from fright, with pathogenic qi entering the sinews and bones. First, use Shuijing Gao (Sleep-Startle Ointment) heavily to induce vomiting of white phlegm (formula see section on Acute Wind-Stroke), then use Zhusha Gao (Cinnabar Ointment) (formula see section on Fright Heat), combined with wind-dispelling herbs for regulation. If vomiting occurs and speech is lost, it is not harmful, as vomiting damages Heart Qi. By this time next year, recurrence is feared; re-administering the aforementioned medicines will lead to recovery.
*Ji Shi Jia Chuan* records: Epilepsy has eight signs: falling forward is Pu, stiffening backward is Jiang, daytime attacks are Yang, nighttime attacks are Yin, cursing people is Dian, laughing at people is Xie, attacking more than ten times a day is Xian, and having this affliction at a young age is Dai.
Master Mao's song on initial pediatric epilepsy:
The whole body burns with high fever and the waist and back are stiff; staring eyes are common. Limbs twitch and cry frequently; attacks come and go, requiring careful observation.
Another song on fatal signs of pediatric epilepsy:
Limbs twitch with a deep pulse; body is limp like cotton, unable to wake temporarily. Jaw is tightly clenched, difficult to feed milk; accompanied by abdominal distension and rumbling. Sweating and fever come again; whole body hot, prone to fright. Even if Lu Yi (Bian Que) were his hands, limb convulsions would not stop.
*Shi Bi Jing* Song of Three Malignant Signs in Thirty-Six Types of Wind-Stroke:
Three convulsions lead to epilepsy; crying loves to accumulate toxic phlegm in the heart. Previously treated frequently by doctors, dispersing into sinews worsens the disease. (*Feng Sui Jing* says: Heart pulse transmission.)
Eyes look like a sheep's unblinking stare; limbs are weak and restless. (*Forty-Eight Signs Song* agrees: Mouth produces white foam, unbearable to speak. *Feng Sui Jing* says: Saliva like pus, white, causing restlessness.) Saliva forms light bubbles with no other issues; invite a doctor to examine carefully.
This occurs if initial treatment fails. The method should disperse wind, using exterior-releasing agents. Eyes resemble sheep eyes, half-open half-closed, limbs soft. If complexion is bright and sleep is easily broken, it is easy to treat; if sleep is heavy, complexion lacks luster, and eyes do not move, it is incurable.
*Feng Sui Jing* has the same song, with notes: Combine with Baihe Dan (White Crane Pill) (formula see Slow Wind-Stroke section) and Raw Silver (formula see Acute/Slow Wind-Stroke section).
*Xiao Er Xing Zheng Lun* Forty-Eight Signs and Three Malignant Signs of Wind-Stroke Song are identical. Later it says: After wind-stroke, doctors taking powders and fright-phlegm into meridians causes epilepsy. Each attack produces bubble-like white foam; doctors can treat; if fragmented spots, it is hard to remove. To recover, long-term intake of a certain pill (formula see this section) is recommended. This medicine does not cause vomiting or diarrhea, only grinding fright-phlegm in meridians.
