The *Qianjin Fang* (Thousand Gold Formulas) discusses epilepsy of the five Zang organs (moxibustion methods are detailed in the following chapter). The symptoms of Liver Epilepsy include: a bluish complexion, eyes rolling upward and staring straight ahead, and convulsive trembling of the hands and feet. (*Yingtong Baojian* [Treasure Mirror for Infants and Children] states: convulsive twitching of the hands and feet.) The symptoms of Heart Epilepsy include: a reddish complexion, heat sensation below the heart, shortness of breath with weak and rapid respiration. (*Yinyin Baojian* states: shortness of breath with slight panting.) The symptoms of Spleen Epilepsy include: a sallow complexion, abdominal distension, and a tendency toward dysentery or diarrhea. The symptoms of Lung Epilepsy include: a pale face and eyes, and foaming at the mouth. (*Yingtong Baojian* states: in Lung Epilepsy, the face and eyes stare rigidly like dry bones, and saliva is vomited from the mouth.) The symptoms of Kidney Epilepsy include: a dark complexion, eyes staring straight without movement, and a body stiff as a corpse. The symptoms of Diaphragm Epilepsy include: eyes rolling upward and inability to raise the four limbs. The symptoms of Intestinal Epilepsy include: lack of bodily movement. (*Yingtong Baojian* states: in Intestinal Epilepsy, the body and limbs do not move, remaining straight but without developing spasms.) These are the clinical manifestations of epilepsy of the five Zang organs.
*Yingtong Baojian* records: besides epilepsy of the five Zang organs, there is also "Abnormal Epilepsy," characterized by a pale complexion, crying and calling out, and changes in facial color.
Qian Yi discussed: In treating all types of Five Epilepsies, treatment must follow the affected Zang organ. Each Zang corresponds to an animal, and the Five-Color Pills are used to treat the disease. Canine Epilepsy involves opisthotonos with upward jerking and barking sounds; it relates to the Liver. Ovine Epilepsy involves staring eyes, protruding tongue, and bleating sounds; it relates to the Heart. Bovine Epilepsy involves fixed gaze, abdominal fullness, and mooing sounds; it relates to the Spleen. Gallus Epilepsy involves startle jumps, opisthotonos, hand contractures, and crowing sounds; it relates to the Lung. Porcine Epilepsy resembles a corpse, with foaming at the mouth and grunting sounds; it relates to the Kidney. Severe cases of any of the five epilepsies result in death; those who survive but have worsening symptoms afterward also die.
Qian Yi’s prescription for the Five-Color Pills: Cinnabar (Ban Liang, ground), Mercury (Yi Fen), Realgar (Liang Liang, calcined), Pearl (Mo Yi Liang, ground), Lead (San Liang, boiled together with mercury). Process these with refined honey to form pills the size of hemp seeds. Administer three to four pills per dose, taken down with decocted Silver-Mint Decoction.
The *Qianjin Fang* discusses epilepsy of the six domestic animals (moxibustion methods are detailed in the following chapter). Equine Epilepsy involves opening the mouth, shaking the head, neighing, and a desire for opisthotonos. Bovine Epilepsy involves fixed gaze and abdominal distension. Ovine Epilepsy involves a tendency to stare and protrude the tongue. Porcine Epilepsy involves a tendency to foam at the mouth. (*Yingtong Baojian* states: in Porcine Epilepsy, saliva is vomited from the mouth; diagnosis relies on observing eye contact with people.) Canine Epilepsy involves flexion of the fingers into fists and tendon contractures. (*Yingtong Baojian* states: fingers flexed, both feet curled into fists.) Gallus Epilepsy involves head shaking, opisthotonos, susceptibility to fright, and spontaneous trembling. These are the clinical manifestations of epilepsy of the six domestic animals.
*Yingtong Baojian* records: besides epilepsy of the six domestic animals, there is also Crow Epilepsy, characterized by puckering of the lips and mouth, squinting eyes, and trembling of both hands. Snake Epilepsy involves a soft body, raised head, protruding tongue, and gazing at people.
The *Boji Fang* (Universal Relief Formulas) treats five types of pediatric epilepsy: Bovine Epilepsy mimics cow sounds; Equine Epilepsy mimics horse sounds; Canine Epilepsy mimics dog barking; Ovine Epilepsy mimics sheep bleating; Gallus Epilepsy mimics chicken crowing.
Patients suffering from the Five Epilepsies experience internal traction among the Fu and Zang organs, where pathogenic factors fill and surge up, leading to cold reversal. They exhibit specific gestures and glances, foam at the mouth, and after a moment recover consciousness as if revived, only for the attack to recur. The Formula for Divine-Efficacy Realgar Pills is identical to Qian’s Five-Color Pills, except that the *Boji Fang* uses eight Fen of Mercury. (Qian’s Five-Color Pills formula is seen in the previous chapter.)
