The *Shenghui Fang* discusses neonatal umbilical wind (Umbilical Wind), which is caused by injury from water-dampness after the umbilical cord is cut. This may occur if water remains in the swaddling clothes, unnoticed by the wet nurse, allowing dampness to invade through the umbilicus; or it may result from exposure to wind-cold when the bindings are loosened. Consequently, the infant suffers from limited movement of the four limbs, swelling of the umbilicus, excessive crying, and inability to suckle milk. If not treated urgently, it leads to critical danger.
Master Mao states: Infants born during the three "la" periods (early postnatal phases) may present with signs of umbilical wind. Symptoms include abdominal and umbilical distension, mouth puckering (mouth contraction), body heat, and refusal to feed. This condition arises because the mother, during pregnancy, indulged in eating pork, chicken, alcohol, and wheat products, causing heat-toxins to accumulate in the Baozhong (uterus/womb). The fetus ingests this maternal heat, and since its blood vessels and five zang organs are not yet fully formed, it becomes susceptible to wind-pathogens. If abdominal and umbilical swelling occurs after birth, treatment should first involve Zhusha Gao (Cinnabar Paste, see the section on Startled Accumulation), dissolved in honey, and applied via sucking or oral administration. Subsequently, Douchi Gao (Fermented Soybean Paste, see the same section) should be applied to the four sides of the umbilicus. Within ten days, administering six doses of Zhusha Gao will cure the disease. If the four sides of the umbilicus turn black and the mouth cannot open due to puckering, this indicates internal convulsion (Nei Chu), which is incurable and requires no medication. If the fingernails turn black, death will occur on that day.
Master Mao further states: Neonatal umbilical wind originates from wind-heat acquired in utero, compounded by water-dampness injury after cord cutting, constituting a malignant prognosis.
Regarding neonatal umbilical diseases in the *Shenghui Fang*: Ancient texts describe three conditions—umbilical wind, umbilical dampness, and umbilical ulcer—all resulting from wind-damp invasion after cord cutting. When wind enters the umbilicus, causing limb immobility, excessive crying, and feeding difficulties, it is called Umbilical Wind. When dampness causes umbilical swelling and moisture that persists without drying, it is called Umbilical Dampness. When wind and dampness interact to cause an umbilical ulcer that fails to heal, it is called Umbilical Ulcer. If any of these three conditions remain unresolved, the pathogen enters the meridians and often transforms into epilepsy (Xian Bing). Established epilepsy should be treated as such.
The *Shenghui Fang* records: For infants within seven days of birth, experiencing umbilical swelling as the cord is about to fall, use the Fengqi Xiongshu Fen Powder (Seal-Umbilicus Male Rat Dropping Powder).
Ingredients: Xiongshu Fen (Male rat droppings, 7 pieces, lightly stir-fried), Hufen (Lead carbonate, 0.5 liang), Dazao (Jujube, 3 fen, pitted), Mianbo Hui (Ash of silk cloth), Shexiang (Musk, finely ground, each 1 qian).
Preparation: Pound and grind the ingredients into a powder. Apply the powder to the umbilicus when the cord is about to fall but has not yet detached, to prevent wind invasion.
The *Shenghui Fang* also provides a formula to apply immediately after cord cutting to prevent umbilical wind and mouth puckering within the first postnatal period.
Ingredients: Luanniao (Tangled hair, size of a chicken egg, burned until smoke ceases but retains charcoal form), Wugong (Centipede, approx. 1 cun, burned to ash), Lingyangjiao (Antelope horn, burned to ash, 1 qian), Shexiang (Musk, size of a small bean), Que'er Fawengzi (Sparrow's rice jar, 3 pieces).
Preparation: Mix and finely grind the ingredients uniformly. Apply immediately after cutting the umbilical cord. Effective.
Another prescription from the *Shenghui Fang*:
Burn Gudi (Melon stalk) to ash, grind, and apply. Effective.
Master Mao records Douchi Gao for applying to the umbilicus to treat umbilical wind.
Ingredients: Douchi (Fermented soybean), Tiannanxing (Arisaema rhizome), Bailian (Bletilla striata), Chixiaodou (Adzuki bean), each 0.5 liang.
Preparation: Grind into powder. Take two large qian per dose, mix with natural juice of Bajiao (Banana leaf), and apply to the four sides of the umbilicus. Apply once daily for two days (twice total). The infant will become comfortable. (Note: Previously mentioned.)
The *Liangfang* describes a method for treating umbilical wind and mouth puckering in swaddled infants. Inspect the center point between the upper and lower lips. If a white spot the size of a broad bean appears, it signals the onset of the disease. Urgently use fingernails to scrape/pick at the center, moving from outside to inside, allowing slight bleeding around the area. Also pick at both ends of the white spot to sever the connection internally and externally, ensuring the qi and blood vessels are disconnected without breaking the flesh deeply. Do not use long nails to avoid injuring the infant. While serving as Inspector of Hebei, visiting Zhao Jun daily, an elder offered this method, saying, "I am old and cherish this method, intending not to pass it on, but I wish to use it to help others." Locals confirmed that this elder had saved over a thousand infants, and people from surrounding counties sought his treatment, all recovering successfully.
The *Jishi Jiachuan* treats umbilical wind locking the mouth.
Ingredients: Jintou Wugong (Golden-headed centipede, 1 piece), Qingzhou Xieshao (Scorpion tail from Qingzhou, 4 pieces), Baijiangcan (White silkworm, 7 pieces), Qumai (Dianthus superbus, "two characters" - likely a textual error or specific measure in original context).
Preparation: Grind into powder. Blow approximately one zi amount into the nose; effective when the infant cries. Additionally, administer one zi amount mixed with Bohe Shui (Mint water) orally.
