According to *Mao Xiansheng Fang*, the syndrome of fontanelle wind and cold damage in infants is characterized by rapid breathing, inability to nurse, body warmth, and nasal congestion. This condition arises because the mother breathes warm air from her nostrils directly onto the infant's fontanelle (the soft spot on an infant's head where the bones have not yet fused) while sleeping with the child at night. Since the infant's fontanelle is not yet closed, exposure to this warm air causes nasal congestion. Treatment involves applying scallion juice ointment to the fontanelle, followed by administering Zhenxin Wan (see formula below) ground in liquid; once the qi mechanism flows freely, recovery occurs.
**Mao Xiansheng Infant Fontanelle Scallion Juice Ointment Formula**
* *Zhiya Zhaojiao* (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit), *Tiannanxing* (Arisaema Rhizome), *Chixiaodou* (Adzuki Bean)
All ingredients are used in equal parts and ground into fine powder. Take two large qian of the powder per dose, mix with natural juice of fresh scallions, and apply to the fontanelle twice. Recovery occurs when nasal patency is restored.
**Mao Xiansheng Infant Anticonvulsant Heart-Calming Pill**, also treats fontanelle wind and cold damage.
* *Zhusha* (Cinnabar, separately ground), *Baifuzi* (Typhonii Rhizoma), *Baijiangcan* (Bombyx Batryticatus, washed with wine), *Chantui* (Cicada Slough, feet and wings removed, cleaned, weighed), *Fushen* (Poria with Hostwood, skin removed; each half liang), *Quanxie* (Scorpio, one fen, tail tip removed), *Nao She* (Borneol and Moschus, added as desired and ground).
Grind all ingredients into powder, mix with natural juice of Mentha to form pills the size of a bullet. Coat with Yin Zhu mixed with Borneol and Moschus. Administer one pill per dose, ground in decoction of Lonicerae Flos and Mentha for oral administration.
**Mao Xiansheng**: There is a syndrome of food-complicated cold damage in infants. Symptoms include high fever, vomiting and regurgitation, abdominal distension, thirst, and diarrhea. This syndrome results from dietary injury causing stagnation and fullness in the five zang organs. Treatment begins with Qingjin Dan administered three to four times to purge (see formula in Food-Complicated Convulsive Cold Damage section), followed by Xingpi San (two formulas available: one in Stomach Qi Disharmony section, one in Slow Liver Wind section) and Yunqi San (see Stomach Qi Disharmony section). If cough is present, Maitang San is administered (see formula in Food-Complicated Convulsive Cold Damage section); after regulation and treatment, recovery ensues.
**Han Dong Wang Xiansheng's *Jiabao*** states: The presentation of food-complicated cold damage differs slightly from that of simple accumulation. If coldness extends below the knees, it indicates simple accumulation, accompanied by tidal fever; purgation should be employed, followed by tonification. If heat is present below the knees, along with generalized fever and a bluish complexion, it is food-complicated cold damage; cold damage must be regulated first, then purgation employed. For these syndromes, careful assessment and medication selection yield consistent efficacy.
**Han Dong Wang Xiansheng's *Jiabao*** on food-complicated cold damage symptoms: Patients exhibit bluish complexion, vomiting and regurgitation, and generalized fever; or may present with thirst, irritability, and headache. Shuijing Dan should be used to purge (see formula in this section); evacuation must occur by dawn. Subsequently, Guanyin San should be administered in two or three doses to tonify (see formula in Stomach Qi Disharmony section), followed by Bohe San in two or three doses to resolve cold qi (see formula in this section). As symptoms subside, if residual heat persists, Qibao Qingqing Dan should be given in two or three doses (see formula in Simple Cold Damage section), interspersed with Renshen San in two or three doses for regulation (see formula in this section).
**Song Verse on Thirty-Six Types of Food-Complicated Cold Damage from *Shibi Jing***: (*Fengsui Jing* notes: Pijian San is used to release the exterior, see formula in Food-Complicated Convulsive Cold Damage section. Wuxi Gao formula is identical to *Yujue*, see Acute and Chronic Convulsive Wind section.)
Food-complicated cold damage initially presents with fever; internal food retention damages the body's joints. Red spots appear on the face resembling erysipelas, (*Fengsui Jing* reiterates: Envy having convulsions with fever, evil combines with cold damage, redness on face like erysipelas*). Frequent opening of the mouth generates dry thirst. Releasing the exterior first demonstrates medical merit; subsequently purging the interior is the divine secret. Gently inducing one or two bowel movements harmonizes the zang-fu, leading to peace and joy.
This occurs due to weak qi and blood, causing ingested food to stagnate in the spleen and stomach, resulting in bean-sized or finger-nail-sized red spots on muscles or face. Main symptoms include insomnia at night and excessive thirst. Assess severity: first purge accumulation, then harmonize stomach qi and reduce fever, adjusting based on subsequent presentations.
The entry on food-complicated cold damage within the *Thirty-Six Types* states: This syndrome is suitable for Baifuzi San (see formula in Food-Complicated Convulsive Cold Damage section).
The entry on forty-eight types of food-damage syndromes in *Xiao'er Xingzheng Lun* states: This syndrome presents with spots on the face, often manifesting as rashes.
*Xianren Shuijian* states: Infant cold damage differs from heat diseases, with three or two explanations. Cold milk is termed food-complicated cold damage; heat forcing pathology is termed cold damage. Each pathway utilizes its respective formula.
To treat infant food-complicated cold damage, first treat the nursing mother.
Decoct Fuzi in water to cook yellow chicken; shred meat, add ginger and scallions with skins removed, plus 2-3 fen of Yaxiao (Mirabilite). Consume hot early to treat the child.
Decoct Fuzi, strain, and use the decoction to cook yellow hen meat. Add scallion whites, ginger, and Mirabilite to make a soup/congee. Consume on an empty stomach.
**Han Dong Wang Xiansheng's *Jiabao*** treats infant food-complicated cold damage, as well as worm accumulation, food accumulation, fetal accumulation, convulsive accumulation, noxious substances, and dietary injury. **Shuijing Dan Formula**
* *Tiannanxing* (one qian), *Huashi* (each raw-ground to two qian), *Shuiyinfen* (Mercurii Subsulphati Rubra, weighed half qian), *Wuyi* (kernel, one hundred pieces), *Badou* (Fricae Semen, fifty grains, husked, oil not removed).
First grind Badou until extremely fine, then add Wuyi kernel and grind again. Add remaining drugs and grind until perfectly uniform. Form pills using mushy rice, sized like bullets. Administer three to five pills per dose, adjusted by age. Swallow with rice water soaked with fresh scallions. Administration requires the infant to be fasting; do not nurse or feed before medication. Slight hunger is acceptable before dosing. If food is above the diaphragm, vomiting will likely occur. If food is below the diaphragm, diarrhea will result. Strictly avoid raw, hard grains and meats. Best administered near bedtime.
**Han Dong Wang Xiansheng's *Jiabao*** treats infant food-complicated cold damage, as well as convulsive-cold damage and warm fevers. **Bohe San Formula**
* *Du Bohe* (Mentha Haplocalyx, half liang, remove coarse stems, use tender parts), *Qianghuo* (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), *Quanxie* (Scorpio, fried), *Mahuang* (Ephedrae Herba, remove nodes), *Jiangcan* (Bombyx Batryticatus, straight ones, remove silk, fried), *Tianzhuhuang* (Calami Tuber, each one fen), *Gancao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, half fen, honey-fried), *Baifuzi* (Typhonii Rhizoma, half qian).
Grind into powder. Dose for infants: one zi; ages 2-3: half qian; ages 4-5: one qian. Decoct in one medicinal measure or half silver cup of water, boil for ten boils, then administer.
**Han Dong Wang Xiansheng's *Jiabao*** post-purge for food-complicated cold damage, aiming to tonify deficiency, regulate stomach qi, promote milk intake, and stop vomiting/diarrhea. **Renshen San Formula**
* *Renshen* (Ginseng Radix), *Lianrou* (Nelumbinis Semen, heart removed, baked), *Fuling* (Poria, each one fen), *Huangqi* (Astragali Radix, half liang, pounded, honey-water fried), *Gancao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, two qian, honey-fried).
Grind into powder. Dose for infants: one zi; ages 2-3: half qian; ages 4-5: one qian. Decoct in one medicinal measure or half silver cup of water, add half a jujube slice, boil for ten boils, then administer.
