According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases in the Works of Chao Yuanfang) regarding the syndrome of mental obstruction in children: Some individuals are born with an imbalance of yin and yang, leading to a blockage of the heart spirit (Shen); others suffer from spiritual depression and unclear consciousness due to illness. All these conditions result from a deficiency of yin and yang qi, causing unclear mental awareness.
*Ge Shi Zhou Hou Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up the Sleeve by Ge Hong) for treating mental obstruction, forgetfulness, and frequent errors:
On the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, take a spider web and place it inside the collar; do not let others know.
*Ge Shi Zhou Hou* Another prescription:
On a Ding You day, secretly go to the market to buy Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi), hide it in the corner of your headscarf, grind it into powder, and take it orally; do not let others know.
*Ge Shi Zhou Hou* Another prescription:
On a Bing Wu day, take a soft-shelled turtle shell and tie it to your belt; this is effective.
*Ge Shi Zhou Hou* Another prescription:
Take the hearts and livers of cattle, horses, pigs, and chickens, dry them, and grind them into powder. Take one "fang cun bi" (a measure equivalent to a square inch) with wine facing the sun, three times a day. After taking it, one will have an excellent memory, understanding ten things when asked about one.
*Ge Shi Zhou Hou*: Confucius' Great Sage Wisdom Pillow Prescription (Zhong Fang):
Poria (Fuling), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Poria with Hostwood (Fushen) (each 5 fen), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Changpu), Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi) (7 fen).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Take one "fang cun bi" with water, three times during the day and once at night.
*Ge Shi Zhou Hou* Another prescription:
Dry Zhaolu flowers in the shade for one hundred days, grind into powder, and take one "fang cun bi" with water in the evening. When sleeping at night, think about matters you wish to know, and you will awaken with clarity in your sleep.
*Ge Shi Zhou Hou* Another prescription:
Half a jin of Shandang Ren Shen (Ginseng), one sheng of hemp seeds on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. Mix, pound, and steam. After the steam dissipates, take one "dao gui" amount before bed to predict future events.
According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* regarding the syndrome of children unable to walk after several years: From the period of "bian zheng" (developmental fever) until speech develops, as days pass, blood vessels and bone joints mature. Once the patella forms, the child can walk. Bones are nourished by marrow. If congenital blood and qi are insufficient, marrow will not be充盈 (full/strong), so bones do not form promptly, resulting in an inability to walk after several years.
*Sheng Hui Fang* discusses: Delayed walking in children is caused by insufficiency of Liver and Kidney qi, leading to weak bone qi and powerless sinews and vessels.
Zhang Huan discusses: Generally, infants reach one year of age, and after 360 days, the knee bones mature, enabling walking. Modern children often have weak fetal qi due to their parents' deficient blood and qi, resulting in weak bone qi, powerless sinews and vessels, and an inability to walk.
*Ying Tong Bao Jian* discusses: Children with bone steaming and cold Lung pulse may be unable to walk for a long time.
*Cranial Suture Classic* (Lu Xin Jing) treatment for young children who were improperly held since birth, resulting in thin and weak legs, inability to stand or walk, or bone heat, malnutrition (gan lao), and emaciation. Chai Hu Yin Zi Formula:
Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum (Biejia, coated with rice vinegar and roasted), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Aurantii Fructus (Zhike, bran-fried and pith removed), Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma).
Equal parts of the above ingredients, finely chopped. For children under three years old, use half a liang of herbs per dose. Add five he of water, decoct to two he, strain, and divide into two doses. Take on an empty stomach and before/after meals. Avoid toxic foods. Use the bathing prescription after drinking.
*Cranial Suture Classic* Bathing Prescription:
Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Kushen), Pericarpium Vitis Viniferae (Fulingpi), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Mori Cortex (Sangbaipi), Alum (Baifan) (each half a liang), Scallion White (Congbai, a small amount).
Finely chop the above. For each bath, take one liang, steep in two sheng of boiling water, then bathe the child when the temperature is suitable. Avoid wind and stay in a warm place for best results.
*Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) for children unable to walk after several years:
Take food from a funeral home before the door is opened, steal it, and feed it to the child, three times a day. The child will soon be able to stand and walk.
*Qian Jin Yi Fang* (Supplement to Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) for children unable to walk after several years:
Steal rice from a funeral home before the door is opened and feed it to the child. Within three days, they will walk. Do not let others know.
*Qian Jin Yi Fang*: Hair from the navel of a cow treats prolonged inability to walk in children.
*Yuan He Ji Yong Jing* treats children aged three who cannot walk due to weakness and insufficient qi reception, resulting in soft bones and sinews in the lower back, spine, legs, and knees.
True Eucommiae Cortex (Wujapi):
Grind into powder. Mix with a small amount of rice gruel and wine, forming a pill the size of a millet grain. Take three times a day. Especially suitable for those with joint stiffness. The classics mention seven formulas including Si Wei Yin, Hei San, Zi Wan, Zhi Sheng San, Shu Zhi Yin, She Xiang Wan, and this Wujapi formula, collectively known as "Seven Treasures for Infant Nurturing." Daoist Ziyang has another version called "Seven Holy Precious Formulas for Protecting Children," which refers to this specific formula.
*Sheng Hui Fang* treats children over ten years old with stagnant blood flow, lax sinews and vessels, weak legs and knees, and inability to walk. Use Sheng Gan Di Huang Wan:
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Gan Di Huang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, chopped and lightly fried), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, remove radicle), Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (Suanzaoren, lightly fried), Red Poria (Chi Fuling), Astragali Radix (Huangqi, chopped), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Xiong), Saiga Tataricae Cornu (Lingyangjiao), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, roasted until slightly red and chopped), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin).
Equal parts of the above, pounded and sifted into powder. Mix with refined honey to make pills the size of mung beans. Take ten pills with warm wine before meals, adjusting dosage based on the child's size.
*Sheng Hui Fang* treats children aged five or six who cannot walk due to weak bone qi and sinews. Use Yi Gan Shen Zang Lingyang Jiao Wan (Benefit Liver and Kidney Saiga Horn Pill):
Saiga Tataricae Cornu (Lingyangjiao屑), Pantheris Tibia (Hu Jinggu, coated with vinegar and roasted until yellow), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Gan Di Huang), Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (Suanzaoren, lightly fried), White Poria (Baifuling) (each half a liang), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, remove radicle), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, chopped and lightly fried), Astragali Radix (Huangqi) (each one fen).
Pound and sift into powder. Mix with refined honey to make pills the size of mung beans. Before meals, dissolve five pills in warm wine and take. (Qian Yi's formula is the same; regarding administration: take a size similar to a soapberry, increase for older children. Dissolve in warm water, take three to four times daily, continue for long-term effect.)
*Ying Ru Fang* treats children who fail to gain muscle mass, cannot walk by age three, experience alternating chills and fever resembling severe epilepsy, and cannot undergo moxibustion or acupuncture due to frequent attacks. Use Wu Shen Yu Tang (Five Ginsengs Bathing Decoction):
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Glehniae Radix (Shashen), Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen), Polygoni Multiflori Caulis (Zican), Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Kushen), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Noupi, roasted), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, processed), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao) (each two liang), Natrii Sulfas (Xiaoshi, three liang), Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Danshen, one liang), Polyporus Umbellatus (Leiwuan, 50 pieces).
Use three sheng of water from rinsing broomcorn millet. Decoct together until boiling three times. Bathe the child when the temperature is suitable. The child should lie down and sweat. Use the remaining liquid for further baths, decocting as before. For severe cases, add one pig trotter for better effect, adding more water.
*Ying Ru Fang* for children unable to walk after several years:
Sacrificial Rice:
Take rice from a grave site while the door is still closed, feed it to the child at the gate. Within twenty days, they will walk. Do not let others know.
Zhang Huan's She Rong Dan (Musk and Egg Yolk Pill) treats prolonged inability to walk and has been highly effective.
Moschus (She Xiang, prepared and ground), Solani Tuber (Qie Rong, roasted with butter until yellow), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Gan Di Huang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, washed and dried), Astragali Radix (Huangqi, chopped), Pantheris Tibia (Hu Jinggu, chopped, coated with butter and roasted until yellow).
Each ingredient one liang. Pound and sift into fine powder. Use four liang of sheep medulla, boil until soft and paste-like, form into pills the size of broomcorn millet. Take ten pills each time, washed down with Agarwood-infused water, before milk or food, three times a day.
*Liang Fang* treats various pediatric musculoskeletal disorders, limb paralysis, and inability to walk or move. Zuo Jing Wan:
Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix (Caowutou, white flesh, raw, peel and remove umbilicus), Momordicae Semen (Mubie, remove shell and grind separately), Liquidambar Resina (Baijiaoxiang), Trogopterori Faex (Wulingzhi) (each three and a half liang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, one liang), Mylabris (Banmao, 200 pieces, remove wings and feet, cook briefly with vinegar).
Grind into powder. Use one jin of peeled black bean powder, pounded raw. Cook with vinegar to form a paste and make pills the size of a cockle. Take one pill each time, dissolved in wine. For musculoskeletal diseases without prior acupuncture injury to sinews and collaterals, four to five pills are effective. My neighbor Mr. Hu had a daughter whose knees and wrists were too weak to stand or walk for years. While visiting Jingyin Buddhist Temple, he spoke with a monk who claimed to cure this. The monk gave him four pills from his pouch, saying they would cure her. Mr. Hu administered them, and the girl could stand. He returned for more medicine. The monk said he wasn't being stingy but wanted to keep some for himself. If insisted upon, a full batch must be made. Mr. Hu offered one thousand coins, which the monk refused, accepting only one hundred. Days later, Mr. Hu received the medicine and returned the remaining pills. A fellow monk assisted in preparing the medicine, revealing the formula. In Jiaxing, I met a ten-year-old boy unable to walk with both feet. I divided one pill into three doses. After finishing, he walked within four to five pills. This method became widely known for its efficacy. This formula promotes Ying and Wei, unblocks collaterals, and specifically treats the Heart, Kidney, and Liver meridians. A sign of its effect is slight dysuria after ingestion.
*Ji Shi Jia Chuan*: Formula for children aged five or six unable to walk.
Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum (Lurong, roasted with butter), Poria (Fuling), Cuscutae Semen (Tusizi) (each one fen), Astragali Radix (Huangqi) (two fen).
