The *Qianjin Fang* discusses: When infants are first born, some have a short lingual frenulum (Ankyloglossia), where a membrane under the tongue resembles a pomegranate seed. The central septum connects to the underside of the tongue, which may cause the child to be unable to speak clearly or articulate properly. It can be cut off; slight bleeding is harmless. If bleeding does not stop, it can be burned into ash and applied as a powder to stop the bleeding.
The *Xiao'er Jiyuan Fang* states: Infantile stuttering originates from insufficiency of Heart Qi and weakness of the root of the tongue, thus the desire to speak exists but the tongue cannot move freely. There are also cases resulting from habitual practice, where the child did not stutter at birth but began to do so after comparing and imitating other children. This is what the common saying refers to: "Three days to learn stuttering, three years to correct it." For stuttering caused by Heart Qi insufficiency and tongue weakness, it can be regulated with medicine. For those resulting from habit, when the habit is first formed, instructing the child to speak slowly and deliberately, while hastening correction, is the best approach.
Chen Cangqi in the *Bencao* states: The myna bird (*Quyu*) treats stuttering; take it roasted and eat it. An infant with stuttering will recover after consuming no more than one bird. Those obtained in the twelfth lunar month treat chronic cough in the elderly.
The *Mingtang Zhenjiu Jing* records moxibustion on two points of Yifeng (TE17), located in the depression behind the ear, where pressure induces sensation in the ear canal. It is the convergence point of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian and Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. It treats deafness, facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eye), jaw dislocation upon yawning, trismus (lockjaw), inability to speak due to stuttering, cheek swelling, and severe pain in the mandible.
The *Longmu Lun* discusses exogenous obstructions causing strabismus (convergent/divergent squint) in infants. Initially, this condition arises from accidental blows to the head and face, or falls striking the forehead and temples, causing the Liver to be affected by Wind from shock, thereby leading to strabismus. It is suitable to administer Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill), Xijiao Yinzi (Rhinoceros Horn Decoction), and Tongdingshinan San (Tongding Shinan Powder) for immediate effect.
Formula for Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill): Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang), Fuzi Bai (Aconitum Carmichaelii Preparatum), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi), Scorpio dried (Ganxie), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) (each 1 liang); Angelica Dahurica Radix (Baizhi), Agastache Rugosa Herba (Huoxiang) (each 0.5 liang); Cinnabar (Zhusha), Moschus (Shexiang) (each a small amount). Grind the above into powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take three pills with mint decoction before sleep. Another formula for Xijiao Yinzi (Rhinoceros Horn Decoction): Rhinoceros Cornu (Xijiao) (1 liang), Belamcanda Chinensis Rhizoma (Shegan), Gentiana Scabra Root (Caolongdan) (each 0.5 liang), Uncaria Rhynchophylla (Gouteng) (3 fen), Scutellaria Baicalensis Root (Huangqin), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Glycyrrhiza Uralensis Radix (Gancao, prepared), Polygala Tenuifolia Radix (Yuanzhi) (each 1 fen). Grind the above into powder. Use one cup of water and one qian of the powder, decoct until half remains. Strain and take warm after meals.
Formula for Tongdingshinan San (Tongding Shinan Powder): Rubus Coreanus Stem (Shinan) (1 liang), Veratrum Nigrum Rhizome (Lilu) (3 fen), Momordica Cochinchinensis Fruit (Gua Di) (5-7 pieces). Grind the above into powder. Each time use an amount roughly the size of a rice grain, twice a day. Blowing it up the nasal passage to reach the top of the head is ideal.
Master An's transmitted formula for treating infantile strabismus: Bambusa Leaves (Zhuye) (49 leaves), Glycine Max Seed (Heidou) (49 grains), Argo Concha (Shijueming, ground extremely fine, 1 qian). Decoct the above three ingredients together with one and a half cups of water until half a cup remains. Administer a small amount warm according to the child's age. Finish within two days, then decoct and administer again.
