(Also known as "Nang Li")
*Qianjin Yifang* states: The condition of pediatric Nang Li (infantile dysentery with abdominal distension) arises when children are frequently exposed to sudden cold qi in the mornings during summer and autumn. Cold qi obstructs the limbs, preventing heat from dissipating outward; when this heat enters the abdomen, it transforms into dysentery, manifesting sometimes as red and white purulent discharge. Symptoms include lower abdominal distension and pain, high fever, and a pulse that is surging, rapid, and frequent. These symptoms result from the binding of cold and hot qi, leading to chronic persistence without recovery, hence termed Nang Li.
*Waitai Miyao* records Liu's prescription for treating pediatric Nang Li:
Gancao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*, roasted), Fuling (Poria, *Polyporus umbellatus*, 6 fen each), Renshen (Ginseng Root, *Panacis Quinquefolii Radix*), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*, 4 fen each), Houpo (Magnolia Bark, *Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex*, roasted), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, *Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens*, 2 fen each), Longgu (Fossilized Bone, *Draconis Os*, 8 fen).
The above seven ingredients are chopped, boiled in one sheng of water until reduced to three ge. Before bedtime, first prepare small pills made of salt paste and Mosiang (Musk, *Moschus*) and insert them into the anus. Then administer this decoction, taken in divided doses, which yields excellent results. Adhere to standard dietary restrictions (Note: This formula may have too many herbs and insufficient water, likely due to differences in ancient and modern measurements; it is advisable to slightly increase the water volume).
*Qianjin Yifang* prescribes the Roudoukou San (Nutmeg Powder) for treating persistent pediatric Nang Li accompanied by abdominal pain:
Roudoukou (Nutmeg, *Myristicae Semen*, shelled), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, *Zingiberis Rhizoma*), Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*, finely ground), Longgu (Fossilized Bone, *Draconis Os*), Helile (Chebula Fruit, *Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus*, baked, using only the peel), Maoxiang (Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome, *Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma*, chopped), Houpo (Magnolia Bark, *Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex*, coarse skin removed, coated with fresh ginger juice, roasted until fragrant), Zhiqiao (Bitter Orange Fruit, *Citri Reticulatae Viridis Fructus*, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow, core removed. Each ingredient: 1 fen).
The above medicines are crushed and sifted through a fine sieve to make a powder. Each dose consists of half qian, mixed with warm Jiangshui (fermented rice water) and taken orally. Administer three to four times daily. Adjust the dosage according to the child's age and size.
*Qianjin Yifang* prescribes the Houpo San (Magnolia Bark Powder) for treating pediatric Nang disease characterized by deficiency-type distension in both hypochondria, abdominal pain, and anorexia:
Houpo (Magnolia Bark, *Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex*, coarse skin removed, coated with fresh ginger juice, roasted until fragrant), Helile (Chebula Fruit, *Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus*, baked, using only the peel), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, *Angelicae Sinensis Radix*, chopped, lightly stir-fried), Chishao (Red Peony Root, *Paeoniae Radix Rubra*), Zhiqiao (Bitter Orange Fruit, *Citri Reticulatae Viridis Fructus*, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow, core removed. Each ingredient: 1 fen).
The above medicines are crushed and sifted through a fine sieve to make a powder. Each dose consists of half qian, mixed with rice drink (*Mi Yin*) and taken orally. Administer three to four times daily. Adjust the dosage according to the child's age and size.
*Jishi Jiazhuang* prescribes a formula for treating Nang Gan Xie (infantile malnutrition with diarrhea), specifically cases involving white dysentery persisting for one to two years accompanied by emaciation:
Roudoukou (Nutmeg, *Myristicae Semen*), Caodoukou Ren (Cardamom Seed Kernel, *Amomi Fructus*), Suosharen (Tsaoko Cardamom Fruit, *Amomi Fructus Tsao-ko*).
The above ingredients are ground together into a fine powder. Form pills using wheat flour paste, sized like bullet seeds. Dry them thoroughly, then grind them back into a fine powder. Each dose is one qian, administered with a decoction of Hezi (Chebula Fruit, *Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus*).
