*Shenghui Fang* discusses: The condition of pediatric gan-kese (wasting-thirst syndrome) arises from pre-existing gan-heat in the zang-fu organs, combined with heat accumulation and stagnation in the Heart and Lungs. This is often caused by the lactating mother indulging in the "Five Pungent Spices" (Wuxin), drinking hot wine, consuming excessive sour and salty foods, or eating roasted and fried foods at night. This leads to qi stagnation in the chest and heart. When she subsequently nurses the infant, it generates internal heat in the infant's zang-fu organs. Heat causes irritability, resulting in persistent thirst in the child.
