*Longmu Lun* discusses the treatment of pediatric gan eye external obstruction. When this eye disease first occurs, it is all due to sores on the head and brain, or because of prolonged diarrhea and dysentery causing hidden depletion, leading to pain, tearing, and difficulty opening the eyes. There is latent heat in the diaphragm, and liver wind qi invades the eyes. When initially suffering from this gan disease, the eyes itch and feel astringent, causing rubbing of the eyebrows; biting nails leads to the formation of nebulae (corneal opacity), redness, swelling, pain, tearing, and difficulty opening the eyes. The eyelids become stiff, and the sclera is completely covered. The patient fears light, lies with face turned away, and dislikes raising the head. This disease should not be treated with cauterization or moxibustion on the head and face, as it may damage the eyes. Eye drops are strictly contraindicated; it is appropriate to take Shagan San (Gan-Killing Powder) and Tuiyi Wan (Nebula-Removing Pill) (formulas see this section).

*Shenghui Fang* discusses that the liver opens into the eyes, and the eyes are the manifestation of the liver. If a child has internal gan qi, emaciated body, and the zang-fu organs are blocked by wind-heat and toxin stasis that cannot be unblocked, due to excessive milk and food intake, phlegm knotting in the chest and diaphragm, evil heat qi attacks the eyes, causing head heat and eye itching, or redness, ulceration, and sore formation, or the gradual generation of nebulae covering the pupil. If not cured for a long time, it damages the eyes, hence called Gan Eye.

*Yu Jue* song for pediatric gan eye nebula: Shaking head and rubbing eyes, heat generates gan; loving darkness and hating brightness, unable to look. Sparrow blindness often due to abundant wind qi; maculopapular rash and fu-organ heat, nebula invades fully.
For this condition, first use Liangge San (Cool Diaphragm Powder), then purge the liver, followed by eye washing, which will ensure no error. Another *Yu Jue* states that for pediatric gan heat, Xiegan San (Purge Gan Powder) and Ruren Gao (Buckthorn Ointment) should be used to cool the diaphragm and reduce heat (formulas see this section). Another *Yu Jue* says: For pediatric gan eye, sparrow blindness, and maculopapular rash entering the eyes, first use methods to benefit the diaphragm and reduce heat, purging the heart meridian, then use gan medicines.

*Longmu Lun* Shagan San Formula
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum), Muli (Concha Ostreae), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (each 2 liang).
Grind the above into powder. Take 1 qian each time, mixed with porridge drink after meals.

*Longmu Lun* Tuiyi Wan Formula
Heishen (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma - Black variety), Fangfeng (each 1 liang), Xixin, Shijueming (Concha Argopectenis), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) (each 0.5 liang), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 1.5 liang).
Grind the above into powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 10 pills on an empty stomach with tea.

*Shenghui Fang* Tian Nanxing San Formula for treating pediatric gan eye and sparrow blindness.
Tiannanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma Preparatum), Gujingcao (Cnidii Fructus), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted red, cut), Huangqin (each 0.5 liang), Shexiang (Musk, 1 fen, ground).
Pound the above medicines, sift finely into powder. Use one sheep liver, cut open, add 2 qian of powder, roast until cooked on a skewer. Take on an empty stomach, then follow with half a cup of unpolished rice porridge to settle the medicine.

*Shenghui Fang* Shi Junzi San Formula for pediatric gan eye when other medicines fail.
Shijunzi (Quisqualis Fructus, 5 pieces), Helilepi (Pericarpium Terminaliae Chebulae, 3 pieces), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 fen, roasted slightly red, cut), Ganchantou (Dry Toad Head, 1 piece, coated with butter, roasted yellow).
Pound the above medicines, sift finely into powder. Take one sheep liver, grind thoroughly with raw rice water in a clay mortar, squeeze out the juice. Mix half a qian of powder with the juice and take after meals. Children under three years old can take a "yi zi" dose.

*Shenghui Fang* Another Formula
Gujingcao, Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, finely cut, slightly fried), Jiangshi (Jiang Stone), Gancao (roasted slightly red, cut. Each 0.5 liang).
Pound the above medicines, sift finely into powder. Take one sheep liver, cut open with a bamboo knife, place a "yi zi" dose of powder inside, tie securely with thread, cook in vinegar until done, let cool, and eat at will. Effect usually seen within 3-5 sheep livers.

*Shenghui Fang* Another Formula
Yeming Sha (Stercoris Apae), Jiangshi (Each 3 fen, slightly fried). Jiangshi is pounded, ground, and washed with water.
Pound the above medicines, sift finely into powder. Take one sheep liver, grind together with half a cup of rice water, squeeze out the juice. Mix half a qian of powder with the juice and take, three times a day. Children under three years old can take a "yi zi" dose.

*Shenghui Fang* Another Formula
Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, powder), Shexiang (Musk), Zhusha (Cinnabar) (all finely ground. Each 1 fen).
Grind the above medicines uniformly. Take half a qian each time. Cut open a pig liver, insert the medicine, place in a silk bag, cook in rice water until done, let cool, and eat. Adjust dosage according to the child's size.

*Shenghui Fang* Another Formula
She Yanggan (Ram Liver, one whole, cut open), Juemingzi (Cassiae Semen, 1 liang).
Pound and sift Juemingzi into fine powder, sprinkle inside the liver. Cook in two bowls of rice water until dry. Eat at any time regardless of meals, adjusting amount according to the child's size.

*Shenghui Fang* Another Formula
Jiangshi (pounded, ground, water-washed), Hanshuishi (Calcitrum, each 1 liang), Chi (Fermented Soybean Paste, 1 he, slightly fried).
Pound the above medicines, sift finely into powder. After meals, mix half a qian with rice water and take. Adjust dosage according to the child's size.

*Shenghui Fang* Gujingcao San Formula for pediatric gan eye redness and itching.
Gujingcao (1 liang), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, peeled, slightly fried, cut), Shetui Pi (Ophichthidis Cutis Cinerea, ash. Each 1 fen), Dingfen (Lead Carbonate, 1 qian).
Pound the above medicines, sift finely into powder. Take 1 qian each time. Use one sheep liver, split open with a bamboo knife, sprinkle medicine inside, tie with thread, cook in rice water. First fumigate the eyes while hot, then drink the juice, then eat the liver. Reduce dose for smaller children.

*Shenghui Fang* Yeming Sha San Formula for pediatric gan eye becoming increasingly small and red.
Yeming Sha (slightly fried), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 1 liang), Tianzhuhuang (Calculus Borisoviae), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, shaved), Lingyangjiao (Caprae Subcutis Cornu, shaved), Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, slightly fried), Gan Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Cheqianzi (each 0.5 liang).
Pound the above medicines, sift finely into powder. Every day at noon, mix half a qian with warm water and take. Adjust dosage according to the child's size.

*Shenghui Fang* Another Formula
Juemingzi, Ruren (Pruni Persicae Semen, soaked in water, remove red skin), Huanglian (remove roots. Each 0.5 liang).
Pound the above medicines, add one large cup of water and 40 ancient coins. Decoct to obtain five parts. Filter through cotton cloth to clarify. Apply to eyes three to four times a day until healed.

*Shenghui Fang* Formula for pediatric gan eye where vision is lost.
Hanshuishi (1 liang, pounded and sifted), Shuiyin (Mercurius, 1 fen).
Mix the above medicines, add a little water, and grind until the mercury stars disappear. Each time, grind half a pig liver with rice water, squeeze out the juice, mix with half a qian of powder, and take. Adjust dosage according to the child's size.

*Shenghui Fang* Jiangshi San Formula for pediatric gan eye fearing light, redness, ulceration, tearing, pain, and impending eye prolapse. Treat early.
Jiangshi (soaked in thick rice water for seven days, dried, pounded, ground, water-washed), Sang'er (Auricularia Auricula-Judae, pounded and sifted), Chi (dried, pounded and sifted. Each 1 liang).
Grind the above medicines uniformly. Children under three years old take half a qian; children aged three to seven take 1 qian. Use sheep liver, or pig liver, or beef liver, two fingers wide, remove membrane, cut finely, grind with water, squeeze out juice, mix with powder and take, three times a day.

*Shenghui Fang* Another Formula
Baizhi, Sang'er, Huaibai Pi (Sophorae Flavescentis Cortex, cut. Each 1 fen), Jiangshi (1 liang, pounded, ground, water-washed).
Pound the above medicines, sift finely into powder. Each time, take a slice of pig liver two fingers wide, cut in 3 qian of powder, tie securely, cook in rice water. Adjust amount given to eat according to the child's size.

*Shenghui Fang* Zhusha San Formula for pediatric gan eye with obstructive nebula.
Zhusha (finely ground, water-washed), Xionghuang (Realgar, finely ground. Each 0.5 liang), Chuan Dahuang (cut into fragments, slightly fried), Shijueming, Huhuanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma var. chinense), Shenqu (Medicated Leaven, slightly roasted. Each 1 liang).
Pound the above medicines, sift finely into powder. Mix half a qian with honey water and take each time, three times a day. Adjust dosage according to the child's size.

*Shenghui Fang* Huhuanglian Wan Formula for pediatric gan eye with persistent white nebula.
Huhuanglian (powder), Zhusha (finely ground, water-washed. Each 0.5 liang), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Xionghuang (finely ground. Each 1 fen), Shexiang (Musk, 1 qian, finely ground), Jinyinbo (Gold and Silver Leaf, finely ground. Each 50 pieces).
Grind the above medicines uniformly. Mix with flour paste boiled in wine to make pills the size of mung beans. Take 3 pills with warm tea, three times a day. Adjust dosage according to the child's size.

*Shenghui Fang* Lingshi San Formula for pediatric gan eye with nebula covering the pupil, threatening blindness.
Lingshi (Bellinite), Shijueming, Gan Juhua, Jingquanshi (Well Spring Stone), Yeming Sha (fried), Huanglian (remove roots. Each 1 fen).
Pound the above medicines, sift finely into powder. Take 2 qian each time. Cook one pig liver with rice water until soft and well-done. Divide and take according to the child's size.

*Shenghui Fang* Yeming Sha San Formula for pediatric gan eye with nebula and body heat.
Yeming Sha, Woniu Ke (Helicis Aspersae Concha) (each slightly fried), Ziqin (Scutellariae Radix), Douchi (Fermented Soybean Paste, fried dry. Each 0.5 liang), Zhusha (1 fen, finely ground).
Pound the above medicines, sift finely into powder. Take 1 qian each time. Add half a spoonful of mung beans to one medium cup of water, cook everything until done, let cool. Divide and take with the dregs according to the child's size.

*Shenghui Fang* Qingshen San Formula for pediatric gan eye and maculopapular rash entering the eyes.
Eshi (Arctii Fructus, fried), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, cut), Wancansha (Bombyx Batryticatus Faeces) (each 1 fen).
Pound the above medicines, sift finely into powder. Mix half a qian with warm water and take each time, three times a day. Adjust dosage according to the child's size.

*Shenghui Fang* Formula for pediatric gan eye, sparrow blindness, and nebula obstruction.
Ge Fen (Concha Meretricis Cyclinae, 1 fen).
Melt yellow wax juice, mix with Ge Fen, make pills the size of soap pod seeds. Split one sheep liver, insert pill, tie with thread, put in rice water. Cook together with 1 qian each of Yeming Sha and Huangqin powder until done. Eat the sheep liver at bedtime as desired; miraculous effect.

*Shenghui Fang* Formula for pediatric gan eye with swollen eyes about to fall.
Apply raw egg white to the palm, rub slowly. Gradually heal hand by hand.

*Shenghui Fang* Another Formula
Pound Zi Cao Hua (Arnebiae Flower) thoroughly, mix with raw oil, apply to heal.

*Boji Fang* Ru Sheng San Formula for pediatric prolonged diarrhea/dysentery, eye nebula, and gan eye nebula removal.
Shetui Pi (Two snake skins, each two chi long, burn with thin candle to ash, grind, or only roast熟), Gujingcao (1 liang, remove root soil), Chan Qiao (Cicadae Perioaterium, remove feet), Shijueming (each 1 fen), Hei Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, powder, 2 qian, remove umbilical scar), Dingfen (4 qian).
First pound the first three ingredients into powder, then add other medicines and grind together into powder. Take a "yi zi" dose each time. Split half a sheep liver, sprinkle powder inside, tie with hemp thread, cook in rice water. First fumigate eyes, then eat. If unable to eat, grind juice and administer.

*Lingyuan Fang* Lingyangjiao Wan Formula for liver-lung stagnation-heat, eye pterygium, red vessels, astringency, pain, red eye nebula, eye pain, itching, photophobia; and pediatric wind-gan consuming yang eye.
Lingyangjiao (Caprae Subcutis Cornu, cut into shavings, sun-dried crisp, powdered), Gancao (Licorice Root, raw), Bai Heshouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix), Wasong (Tremella Formosa), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Yujin (Curcumae Radix, processed with earth to remove fire qi. Each 1 liang for Wasong/Dihuang/Yujin; 2 liang for others).
Finely cut the six ingredients, dry, pound and sift into fine powder. Mix with refined honey to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 15 pills each time, swallow with cold decoction of strong Danzhuye (Lophatheri Herba) and Heidou (Sojae Semen Nigrum) after meals before bed. For children, make pills the size of mung beans, take 7-10 pills each time.

*Tan Shi Shu Sheng Fang*: Pediatric gan eye hates the three lights, hiding all day as if avoiding concealment. Crying incessantly, nothing matches the distress. Tu Gua (Trichosanthes Kirilowii Root), Juemingzi, Shi (Stone), Gancao, Huanglian, Chuan Dahuang. Add Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) and take together, clearing clouds to see the sun shining brightly.
Tui Yun San (Cloud-Removing Powder)
Ca Jueming (Cassiae Semen), Tu Gua Gen (Trichosanthis Radix), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, processed), Yuan Shen (each 0.5 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted), Xuan Lian (Scutellariae Radix), Shi (Jingquan Shi/Well Spring Stone, ground. Each 1 fen).
Grind finely into powder. Take 1 qian each time, decoct with one cup of water to 0.7 portion, give five times.

Zhang Huan Jingquan Shi San Formula for eye gan, evil heat attacking eyes, gradual nebula formation damaging pupil.
Jingquan Shi (1 liang), Wancansha, Yeming Sha (each slightly fried), Shijueming, Gan Juhua, Huanglian (remove roots. Each 0.5 liang).
Pound and sift into fine powder. Take 1 qian each time. Add a little raw liver to one cup of rice water, decoct to five parts, until liver is soft. Take when warm, after milk/food.

*Jubao Fang* Lingshi San Formula for pediatric gan eye blurriness/astringency, or prolonged diarrhea/dysentery leading to sparrow blindness/gan eye.
Lingshi (Greenish appearance, coarse blocks like egg size, often moves in wool).
Grind into powder, refine extremely fine; wash with water, grind again like flour. Take one large qian each time. Split one leaf of pig liver, sprinkle powder inside, wrap with hemp thread outside. Decoct liver in one cup of rice water until cooked, pour into vessel, fumigate eyes while hot. Wait for gas to cool, eat on empty stomach with little water. Effective within a few doses.

*Jubao Fang* Huang Sanzi Formula for gan eye and sparrow blindness.
Xin Niudan (New Ox Gallbladder), Yujin, Qing Ge Fen (Concha Meretricis Cyclinae Cyanum) (each 3 liang), Zhu Dan (Pig Gallbladder, 3), Da Huang, Huanglian (each 0.5 liang), Xionghuang (1 qian).
Grind seven ingredients into powder, fill into gallbladders, shade-dry, grind into powder. Adults take 1 qian, children take 0.5 qian, mix with new water. Red eye, Qi eye, sparrow blindness: take three times daily, healed in 3-5 days. Gan eye: healed in 5 days, take after meals.

*Yu Jue* Xiegan San Formula
Mu Zei (Equiseti Hiemalis Herba), Weilingxian (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma? Note: Usually Saposhnikoviae Radix in some contexts but here likely distinct herb or typo for Fangfeng/Wulingxian context, sticking to text: Weilingxian), Zishen, Jia Ju (Domestic Chrysanthemum), Qianghuo, Chantui (Cicadae Perioaterium, remove feet), Da Huang (Raw), Gancao (Roasted), Shijueming (each equal parts), Naohuo (Borneolum Syntheticum, small amount).
Grind into powder. Use 2 qian of medicine each time. Split 1 liang of pig liver, remove membrane, sprinkle medicine inside, tie with thread, cook in rice water, chew and swallow.

*Yu Jue* Ruren Gao Formula
Ruren (Pruni Persicae Semen, 49 grains, remove skin and oil), Naohuo (small amount).
Grind into ointment. Use rush light to apply a small amount.

*Ji Shi Jia Chuan* Bo Yun San Formula for gan eye.
Ca Jueming (1 qian), Tu Gua, Da Huang, Yuan Shen, Shi, Xuan Lian (each 0.5 liang).
Powder. Take 1 qian each time. Decoct with one cup of water to 0.7 portion, take warm after meals.

*Ji Shi Jia Chuan* Xi Gan Yinzi Formula for all gan eyes, dim vision.
Qingxiangzi (Pharbitidis Semen), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shan Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Gancao (Roasted), Ziwan (Adenophorae Radix), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum).
Equal parts. Take 3 qian each time, decoct with two sheng of water to 6 dou, take slowly.

*Hu Shi Jia Chuan* Zhu Dan Huanglian Wan Formula for pediatric gan emaciation. Greatly treats liver gan causing eye disease, white membrane covering pupil, unresponsive to other medicines.
Huhuanglian, Xionghuang (finely ground), Yeming Sha (finely ground. Equal parts above), Zhu Dan (one), Shexiang (small amount, do not boil in gall).
Grind into powder. Mix with pig bile to proper consistency. Put back into original gall bladder, tie mouth tightly with thread. Boil in rice water for 5-7 boils. Remove and let cool. First grind Shexiang finely in mortar, then mix with medicine (do not use gall bladder skin, just take medicine). When fine, mix with soft rice to make pills the size of hemp seeds. Take 10 pills each time, up to 15 for larger children, swallow with rice drink. If gan qi is strong, must use aged rice drink.

*Zhu Shi Jia Chuan* Bo Yun San Formula for pediatric gan.
Ca Jueming, Tu Gua, Shijueming, Huanglian (each 1 fen), Yuan Shen, Da Huang (processed. Each 0.5 fen).
Grind into powder. Take 1 qian each time, decoct with one cup of water to 0.7 portion, divide into five doses. Take warm after meals.

*Shenghui Fang* Pediatric gan eye: Moxibustion Hegu (LI4) acupoint, 1 zhuast each side, moxa cone size of wheat grain, located in the depression between the bones of the thumb and index finger.
