Qianjin Fang records: Whenever there is a gu (bone abscess), it is named so because the pus does not rupture but attaches to the bone to form an abscess. This disease tends to occur in large joint spaces; men and postpartum women are prone to it in the hip region, while children are also susceptible on the back. In acute cases, one initially feels pain and immobility, with deep bone pain upon palpation. The classics state: "Initially, the skin and flesh gradually become tight, swollen, and puffy." For children, crying loudly as soon as the hand approaches the affected area indicates pain in the limbs and joints. In chronic or mild cases, one initially feels a burning sensation within the muscles. The classics state: "Initially, one feels painful numbness and lack of mobility; children's limbs cannot move, appearing similar to paralysis." If one observes a burning sensation in the muscle tissue at the joint spaces and fails to recognize it as a gu (bone abscess), it may lead to generalized swelling without ulceration, with the body taking on a bluish-black hue. Adults sometimes fail to distinguish it, calling it "thief wind" or "wind swelling," unaware that it is a gu (bone abscess). When the human body suffers from heat and seeks coolness by facing the wind, wind pathogens enter the bone gaps. Wind and heat contend, resulting in a gu (bone abscess). Symptoms include drowsiness, heaviness of the body, and sudden tinnitus. Additionally, sleeping outdoors in autumn, winter, or summer exposes one to cold injury; latent wind-heat condenses and causes this disease. Acute cases involve more heat and less wind; chronic cases involve more wind and less heat. Children do not understand why they contract this disease from wind and cold; it is due to their abundant blood and tender skin being injured by wind, causing stagnation and coagulation. Upon initial onset of a gu (bone abscess), one must immediately administer Loulu Tang (Rhapontici Radix Decoction) to purge, apply Xiaodou San (Adzuki Bean Powder) externally to resolve the swelling, and can take Wuxiang Lianqiao Tang (Five-Aromatic Forsythia Decoction). (Formulas for Loulu Tang and Wuxiang Lianqiao Tang are found in the Carbuncle section.)
Qianjin Yi Fang provides a formula for bone abscesses treated by hundreds of methods without improvement.
Apply moxibustion directly on the sore for three days and nights; all will heal.
Qianjin Yi Fang, another prescription: For chronic sores that do not heal, recur after healing, and expel bone fragments through openings, named bone abscess.
Take one dead female black chicken, clean off the meat, extract the bones, and calcine them to ash. Scrape wood from Niuju Mu (Cow Restraint Tree) from three different households to obtain shavings. Take one liang each of cooking mats from three different households, calcining each separately to ash. Mix these ashes and apply them into the wound. Dozens of bone fragments will be expelled, leading to cure.
Waitai Mi Yao citing Qianjin Fang: For bone abscesses where chronic sores do not heal, recur after healing, and expel bone fragments through openings, named bone abscess.
Mix pig bile with Qiuye (Chinese Hackberry Leaf), pound into a paste, and apply as a dressing.
Waitai Mi Yao citing Qianjin Fang, another prescription:
Pound Baiyangye (White Poplar Leaf), sieve it, and apply topically.
Waitai Mi Yao citing Qianjin Fang, another prescription:
Dig a pit, small at the mouth and wide at the bottom, three chi deep. Take five sheng of dry chicken manure, mix with mugwort and jingye (Chinese Cornus Leaf), ignite to produce smoke. Place the abscess opening over the pit, cover the pit mouth with clothes to prevent smoke leakage. After about half a day, worms will emerge.
Waitai Mi Yao citing Qianjin Fang: For carbuncles, ulcers, and bone abscesses.
Grind Longgu (Fossilized Bones) into powder. Apply a two-fen thick layer around the four sides of the sore.
Waitai Mi Yao citing Qianjin Fang, another prescription:
Take one self-dead clam, a handful of hair, and one jin and half liang of lard. Decoct the clam and hair in the lard until fully dissolved. Strain the liquid. Once cooled, add one he of salt and mix well. Apply the ointment into the sore, changing once daily. Worms resembling hair will emerge; when all worms are expelled, the condition heals.
Waitai Mi Yao citing Beiji Qianjin Yaofang: For bone abscesses persisting for years, recurring annually, with discharging fluid that does not heal.
Melt glue, grind into powder. Dust the raised part of the sore. For broken areas, smear raw carp flesh. After approximately the time it takes to eat a meal, scrape and inspect. Small worms will emerge. Wash and reapply repeatedly until all worms are expelled. Beiji Qianjin Yaofang and Wenzhong agree.
Waitai Mi Yao citing Beiji Qianjin Yaofang: For treating ulcerous sores with protruding bone.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Moli (Ostreae Concha) (each two fen, calcined).
Grind both ingredients into powder. First wash with saline solution, then dust with the powder. Wenzhong agrees.
