(Also known as Spleen Gan Syndrome)
*Taiping Shenghui Fang* records: The so-called pediatric Food Stagnation Gan (a chronic malnutrition syndrome caused by improper diet) arises from dysfunction of the spleen and stomach, excessive intake of milk and food, leading to damage of the zang-fu organs. Therefore, infants within one hundred days have delicate intestines and stomachs, with small amounts of milk feeding. After three years of age, qi and blood gradually flourish, and the intake of milk and food increases. At this stage, the wet nurse must regulate cold and warmth, control dietary portions, reduce the five flavors, and ensure the harmony of qi and blood, so that the child remains free from disease. If dietary habits are irregular, with excessive consumption of raw and cold foods, accumulation and stagnation fail to digest and remain in the intestines and stomach, resulting in Food Stagnation Gan. Clinical manifestations include sallow complexion, emaciation, abdominal distension with thin legs, dry and brittle hair, persistent dryness of the nose and mouth, pica (eating dirt), sensation of heat in the head, visible cyanotic veins on the abdomen, oral ulcers, inability to digest food and fluids, profuse diarrhea, gradual decline into weakness and fatigue. These constitute the diagnostic signs.
