[Attached with Ghost Qi]
*Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao) describes the syndrome of children being possessed by ghost qi: Children have weak divine spirit (Shen Qi), with diminished vitality and emaciated physique, causing their soul (Hun) to be controlled by ghost qi. The presentation shows no obvious other ailments, but rather a sallow complexion, frequent loud crying, and persistent foul breath.
The *Xiao'er Gui Chi Ge* (Song on Child Possession by Ghost Qi) from *Ying Tong Bao Jian* states:
Children with weak vital energy and declining destiny often have their hun and po controlled by ghosts. Their signs include a sallow complexion and frequent crying on the ground; in such cases, medication is unnecessary, and one should seek help from a master (exorcist).
Another song, *Xiao'er Gui Qi Ge*, also from *Ying Tong Bao Jian*, states:
Ghost qi resides within the skin and spreads through the openings of the zang-fu organs. The body becomes swollen and flaccid like edema, resembling convulsions or epilepsy. Fever causes dryness of the whole body, with spasmodic pain in the heart and abdomen. If children suffer from this, they must take medicine urgently and see a doctor.
*TU Jing* records a formula for treating possession by ghost qi.
The above method uses tiger eyes, claws, fingers, bones, and hair tied to the child's arm to ward off evil ghosts.
*Waitai Miyao* cites *Shen Shi Fang*'s Wu Xie Wan (Five Evils Pill) to treat madness caused by evil spirits, delirious speech, frantic running, confusion, and inability to recognize people. This is considered a counter-attack by ghost qi, and the Sha Gui Wan (Ghost-Killing Pill) formula should be used.
Ingredients: Cinnabar (Dan Sha), Realgar (Xiong Huang) (each separately ground), Dragon Bone (Long Gu), Ma Mu Du Gong, Aralia elata root bark (Gui Jian Yu) (each 5 liang), Akebia fruit (Gui Jiu) (2 liang), Adzuki bean (Chi Xiao Dou) (3 liang), Mylabris (Yuan Qing) (1 piece), Peach Kernel (Tao Ren) (100 pieces, peeled, tips removed, roasted, and separately ground).
Crush the above nine ingredients, sieve them, pass through fine silk, mix the medicines thoroughly, blend them, add wax, and form pills the size of a bullet. Store them in a crimson silk pouch. Tie to the arm: left for males, right for females; for children, tie to the head. Do not let women, chickens, or dogs see the preparation. Take honey-combined pills the size of a wutong seed, three pills per dose, three times daily. Avoid five pungent spices and raw blood products.
*Chao Shi Bing Yuan* describes the syndrome of childhood zhu disease: "Zhu" means to stay or remain, referring to wind pathogens and ghost qi lingering inside the human body. Regardless of age, if blood and qi are deficient and declining, yin and yang lose their balance, allowing wind pathogens and ghost qi to invade and lodge between the muscles and linger within the zang-fu organs. Symptoms may include twitching of the skin that moves unpredictably; stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen; fever with swollen skin; or a heavy, stagnant condition leading to death. After death, the pathogen can transmit to others, hence it is called "zhu." Children cannot withstand wind pathogens well; illness often occurs when wet nurses expose themselves to temperature changes, dampness, or heat while undressing for breastfeeding, or when carrying children out early and late, causing the child's weak soul to be injured by ghost qi.
*Qian Jin Fang* records a formula for treating childhood zhu disease.
Use equal parts of ash from the kitchen stove and salt, mix, heat, and apply as a hot compress (moxibustion-like application).
Tai Yi Bei Ji San (Great One Emergency-Prepared Powder) from *Qian Jin Fang* treats sudden onset of evil qi, ke-wu (hostile encounter), five corpses entering the abdomen, ghost stabs, ghost paralysis, hematemesis and hematochezia due to gu-zhu poisoning, sudden abdominal pain, abdominal distension, cold damage, and heat-toxin diseases after six or seven days.
Ingredients: Realgar (Xiong Huang), Genkwa Flower (Yuan Hua), Cassia Twig (Gui Xin) (each 2 liang); Cinnabar (Dan Sha), Sichuan Pepper (Shu Jiao) (each 1 liang); Veratrum (Li Lu), Croton Seed (Ba Dou) (each 1 fen); Prepared Aconite Root (Fu Zi) (5 fen, processed until cracked, peel and navel removed); Kadsura Longipedunculata Root Bark (Ye Ge) (3 fen).
Process the Ba Dou separately into a paste. Grind the remaining eight ingredients together and sieve. Mix the Ba Dou paste with the powder, pound again, combine in a copper vessel, seal tightly, and prevent leakage. For emergencies, administer with water using a measure of "one character spoon"; this can be increased to half a "half-qian spoon." Reduce the dose for elderly and young patients. If the disease is in the head, epistaxis will occur; if above the diaphragm, vomiting will occur; if below the diaphragm, diarrhea will occur; if in the limbs, sweating will occur. This remedy acts like hot water melting snow, bringing immediate recovery. Keep this secret; do not transmit to non-medics.
*Qian Jin Fang* records a formula for treating the transmission of zhu disease, as well as cholera with sudden evil qi, childhood ke-wu, and chronic prolonged illnesses.
Ingredients: Hyrax Liver (Ta Gan) (one piece); Realgar (Xiong Huang), Herba Siegesbeckiae (Mang Cao), Cinnabar (Dan Sha), Akebia Fruit (Gui Jiu), Rhinoceros Horn (Xi Jiao), Croton Seed (Ba Dou) (each 1 liang); Musk (She Xiang) (2 fen); Rhubarb (Da Huang), Bovine Calculus (Niu Huang) (each 1 liang); Centipede (Wu Gong) (one piece).
Grind the above eleven ingredients into powder, make pills with honey. Take two pills the size of hemp seeds on an empty stomach, increasing up to five pills, stopping when efficacy is achieved.
