Wei Ling Wan (Stomach-Calm Pill): See formula in Volume 2, Section on Injury by Dampness.
Jia Wei Wei Ling Wan (Modified Weiling Wan): This is the original formula of Weiling Wan plus the following herbs.
For initial onset of edema in the head and face, add a small amount of Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba); for wheezing, add Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex) and Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum); for yellow and red urine, add Mutong (Akebiae Caulis); for generalized edema, add Wujia pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex); for abdominal distension, add Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Baikou (Cardamomi Albi Fructus), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), and Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus); for cold feet that do not warm up, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Shang Qinggui (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix).
Pingwei San (Calm the Stomach Powder): See formula in Volume 3, Section on Malaria.
Jia Wei Sijunzi Tang (Modified Four Gentlemen Decoction): Treats edema caused by spleen failure and stomach injury due to yin-cold; taking it frequently will lead to spontaneous resolution.
Guanjian Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Biaozhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 qian), Baiyunling (Poria, 1.5 qian), Shang Qinggui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 8 fen), Heipaojiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatum, 1 qian), Xisharen (Amomi Fructus, 1 qian), Baidoukou (Cardamomi Albi Fructus, 1 qian), Gongdingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, 3 fen), Zhi Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata, 5 fen).
Three large dates (Ziziphus Jujuba Fructus), decocted in water, taken warm when half-hungry, until cured.
Whenever children suffer from edema, salt must be strictly avoided, as salt aids the pathogenic water factor, and consuming it worsens the condition. Salt should only be used sparingly after the edema has subsided, applied externally by rubbing. Edema starting from the feet and spreading to the abdomen is difficult to treat. Use five sheng of red rice beans, boil them in water until very soft, take four or five sheng of the broth, and soak the lower legs below the knees in the warm liquid; re-warm if it cools down. If it has already spread to the abdomen, daily consumption of red bean decoction can also resolve it, because the efficacy of red beans lies specifically in promoting dampness removal and diuresis.
To treat foot edema, dig up cedar roots, cut them into pieces. Those with red interior are called oil cedar and can be used; those with white interior are unsuitable. Chop the red roots finely, decoct into a strong soup, first fumigate and then wash the swollen feet; one or two treatments will cause spontaneous resolution. Another prescription: use one large bowl of red fermented rice cake (Hongzao), add fresh ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and raw green onion (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), decoct these three together into a soup, first fumigate and then wash.
Another method for treating simultaneous edema of the head, face, hands, and feet: use one liang of Kutingli (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen), stir-fry熟 through paper until cooked, grind into fine powder. Steam large red dates (Ziziphus Jujuba Fructus), remove pits and skins, mix the flesh with the powder, pound evenly to make pills the size of small beans. Take seven pills each time, washed down with plain boiled water, three times a day. Within five to seven days, urination will increase, and the edema will naturally subside. Avoid salty, sour, and raw/cold foods.
For edema caused by Cold Damage or Injury by Dampness: slice Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) and Laifuzi (Raphani Semen) in equal proportions, stir-fry until fragrant, remove and discard the Laifuzi, keep only the Qianghuo, and grind into powder. Take one qian per dose: once on the first day, twice on the second day, three times on the third day. Effective.
Edema syndrome accompanied by wheezing affects men, women, adults, and children alike. If edema is caused by accumulation, and recurs after the accumulation is removed, with difficulty in urination: using diuretic drugs again, which are cold in nature, will further obstruct urination, leaving physicians helpless. This is because the qi mechanism of the middle and lower jiao fails to ascend and descend, forming yin-cold obstruction, causing water to congeal and flow不通. Use Shu Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 3 qian), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 2 qian), and Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, 3 fen), decoct together into a strong soup, and take cold. For adults: use one liang of Fuzi, six qian of Shengjiang, and grind Chenxiang into thick juice; mix the Fuzi-Shengjiang soup with the Chenxiang juice and drink. Do not limit the number of doses; stop when cured.
For generalized body and facial edema where sitting and lying down are uncomfortable: take mulberry branches (Mori Ramulus) growing towards the east, burn to ash, leach out the juice, and boil several sheng of red beans. Eat whenever hungry, without drinking any other fluids.
The root of edema lies in spleen deficiency failing to control water, leading to water accumulation and erratic movement causing swelling. Treatment should focus on tonifying the spleen with Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). When spleen qi is solidified, it can transport and transform effectively, allowing water to move normally. One must absolutely avoid purgative methods.
